Chapter 3

ผู้เขียน: Bad Baby
After receiving my report, the police took the attempted murder case very seriously.

That afternoon, two police cars and a tow truck arrived at Tom's repair shop. They cordoned off the area with police tape. Then, they towed my car away as evidence.

A relative from my hometown, who happened to be in the city on business, filmed the entire scene. He loved to gossip, so he immediately sent the video to Mom, who was playing poker yet again.

He exaggerated what he had seen. "Oh my, look at this! Police cars and a tow truck are there with police tape everywhere. Henry's car is leaking. I bet he crashed so badly that both he and the car are totaled!"

Mom was just holding a poker card when she heard the voice message. Her eyes lit up.

"I won! Pure Flush!" she exclaimed.

She excitedly threw her poker cards on the table, grinning from ear to ear. "What a lucky day! This is double the good news! I'm about to get rich!"

She was so excited that she didn't even bother collecting her winnings.

Her hands trembled as she dialed Emmett's number. "Where are you? The police towed away Henry's car! A relative of ours saw it with his own eyes. The brakes must have failed, and he crashed to his death! Two million dollars! We're getting two million dollars!"

At that moment, Emmett was having a humiliating moment in front of Jemima Gardner's family because his credit card had been frozen.

The instant he got the call, he straightened his back.

He immediately put the phone on speaker and bragged in front of Jemima and her parents. "Did you hear that? Henry's whole family is dead! That two-million-dollar insurance payout is all mine! Forget the 800,000-dollar wedding gift. Tomorrow, I'll bring you a million dollars!"

Jemima's family exchanged doubtful looks. "Does it really work like that? Insurance companies don't pay out that quickly, do they?"

Emmett looked smug as he thumped his chest. "Everything Henry had has always been mine as long as I wanted it. He's dead now, so of course the money's mine!"

To show off even more, he even posted on social media, "Life is unpredictable. Henry and Noelle, may you rest in peace. As the head of this family now, I'll take good care of Mom for you. Tomorrow, I'll pick up a Porsche to help comfort my broken heart."

Back in the hospital room, my phone screen lit up.

It was a cousin who had never approved of Mom's behavior. He had sent me a screenshot of Emmett's post.

He asked, "Henry, are you okay? Has Emmett lost his mind? Why is he posting online saying you're dead?"

Looking at those heartless words in the screenshot, my heart still ached even though I had been mentally prepared. These were my family, but they dreamed of getting rich by trampling on my dead body.

Mark, who was beside me, saw the screenshot. The veins on his forehead bulged with fury.

"I'm going to find those two animals and settle this with them!" he snapped.

"Calm down, Mark." I stopped him.

Turning off my phone's screen, I remained frighteningly calm. "Let them enjoy their fantasy for now. The higher they fly, the harder they'll fall later."

Just then, Noelle let out a pained groan from the hospital bed. "Honey..."

Her face turned pale. She clutched her stomach with both hands as cold sweat instantly beaded across her forehead.

"I... I think my water just broke..."

My mind went blank. I rushed over and immediately slammed the emergency call button beside her bed.

At the very same moment, Mom grabbed Emmett and hurried toward the door. Following behind them were Jemima and her family.

She chirped, "Come on! Let's go to the hospital morgue right now to identify the bodies and get the death certificate issued. First thing tomorrow morning, we'll go to the insurance company and collect the money!"

  • My Mom Tried to Cash in My Death   Chapter 10

Three months later, the case finally went to trial. In the courtroom, I sat calmly in the plaintiff's section as the victim. I swept a calm gaze over Emmett and Mom, who were in the defendants' seats.Because of the solid evidence gathered against them, every excuse they made was meaningless. In particular, the recording about using the one-million-dollar insurance payout to pay for the wedding became the key piece of evidence that secured their convictions. With a lengthy prison sentence looming over him, Emmett broke down. In an attempt to receive a lighter sentence, he changed his testimony in court and shifted all the blame onto Mom.He yelled, "Your Honor, I'm innocent! Mom made me do it!"Still wearing handcuffs, he pointed at Mom and shouted, "She told me Henry had insurance! She told me to cut the brake line! I didn't even know where it was. She showed me! I didn't know anything. I was just an obedient son who listened to his mom!"The moment Mom heard the son she had lov

Mom was suspected of stirring trouble and disrupting order. On top of that, the police uncovered evidence that she had allegedly incited a crime while investigating Emmett's case. As a result, she was placed under detention. On the eve of the trial, I received a notice from the police asking me to go to the precinct to provide an additional statement as the victim. After I finished giving my statement, they arranged for me to meet Mom one last time in the visitation room, where a glass wall would separate us.After spending less than half a month in jail, Mom looked as though she had aged ten years. Her once-plump cheeks had completely sunken in. Her cheekbones now jutted out very obviously. The carefully permed and dyed curls she had always taken pride in were now brittle and tangled.Wearing an oversized orange jumpsuit and handcuffs, she shuffled slowly to the glass. The moment she picked up the phone receiver and looked at me, tears poured down her face."Henry... My son… I've

Not only did Mom fail to force me to withdraw the case, but she even ended up becoming a public disgrace. Her lawyer told her plainly that the evidence against Emmett was overwhelmingly solid, and that he was facing a sentence of more than ten years in prison. The only option left was to come up with a substantial amount of compensation and try to obtain a statement of forgiveness from me. If she could do that, Emmett's sentence might be reduced by a few years. With nowhere else to turn, Mom set her sights on the house back in our hometown. It was in a good location and could now sell for more than one million dollars. But when she arrived at the house with a real estate agent and a prospective buyer, she was completely dumbfounded. Two court seals had been affixed to the front door, each stamped with the court's official seal."W-What's going on? Who sealed up my house?" Mom screamed and lunged at the seals, trying to tear them off.The real estate agent was startled and hurrie

After spending an entire night crying, screaming, and making a scene outside the police station to no avail, Mom was at her wit's end. She knew that as long as I, the victim, refused to back down, Emmett would almost certainly receive a heavy sentence. To force me to withdraw the case, she posted a long message in our family group chat. Every word painted her as a pitiful old mother who had been deeply hurt by her eldest son and driven into a corner. In the video, her hair was a mess as she cried hysterically."Everyone, tell me if this is fair! Henry got rich in the city. He lives in a luxury home and drives a nice car, yet he just stood by while Emmett couldn't even afford to get married. Out of spite, Emmett damaged one little brake line on his car."But Henry called the police and accused Emmett of trying to murder him. He sent him straight to jail! He's trying to drive the two of us to our deaths! I carried this ungrateful son for ten months in my belly only to have him turn

After being thrown out of the maternity ward, Mom and Emmett didn't leave the hospital. They found seats in the outpatient lobby on the first floor and sat there, still unwilling to give up.Emmett gritted his teeth and fumed, "Mom, how dare that bastard cut off my money? I'm never letting him get away with this! Once he's discharged from the hospital, I'll smash his house. Let's see what he can do about it."Mom rubbed his cheek gently, her face full of sympathy. "That's right. Tear his house apart! He's the older brother, and he did you dirty. He's asking for it! Later, I'll go make a scene at his workplace and ruin his reputation!"The two of them were so absorbed in plotting their revenge that they never noticed several police officers striding into the lobby. It wasn't until a pair of handcuffs clicked around Emmett's wrists that they finally snapped out of it."Your name is Emmett Johnstone, correct?"The lead officer's expression was stern as he held out an arrest warrant.

The hallway fell into complete silence.Mom's expression froze, and the muscles in her face twitched slightly.Emmett's eyes widened in shock. He instinctively took a step backward and bumped into Jemima."Y-You're not dead?" he blurted, his voice cracking with disbelief. His mind still hadn't caught up with what was happening. Furiously, he shouted, "If you're not dead, what about my house? What about my wedding gift? Why didn't you just die?"The moment those words left his mouth, Jemima's family stared at him as if he were a monster. No matter how greedy they might be, they couldn't comprehend how Emmett could say that he wanted me, his brother, dead without batting an eye.I looked at Emmett's contorted features and smiled instead of getting angry.I took out my phone, opened the recording I had made at the repair shop, and pressed play."I only told Emmett to cut the brake line a little. You won't die. That million-dollar insurance payout would be just enough to cover th
