Sera

"Thank you all for coming tonight."

Kane's voice carried across the ceremonial hall, strong and clear. I stood at the back, smoothing down my dress for the hundredth time. Blue, because he'd told me it brought out my eyes. I'd spent hours getting ready for this moment.

Three years. Three years of waiting, and tonight he was finally going to make me Luna.

The hall was packed. Every wolf in Blackwater had turned out for the ceremony. Kane stood on the platform in his formal Alpha robes, looking exactly like the man I'd fallen in love with three years ago. Tall, broad-shouldered, those blue eyes that had locked onto mine across a bonfire and changed everything.

"Tonight marks an important moment for our pack," he continued. "Three years ago, I found my mate."

My heart jumped. This was it.

His eyes found mine across the crowd. "Sera has been by my side through some of our most challenging times. She's worked harder than anyone I know, proven her dedication over and over, shown this pack what real commitment looks like."

People turned to look at me. I felt my face heat up but I kept my expression calm. Professional. Like a Luna should.

"I want everyone here to understand how much I value what she's done for Blackwater," Kane said. "The effort she's put in, the late nights, the work she's taken on without complaint. It hasn't gone unnoticed."

Someone nudged me forward. I took a step, then another. The crowd parted to let me through. My legs felt shaky but I kept walking, kept my head up. This was what I'd been waiting for. What I'd earned.

"But the truth is," Kane said, and something in his tone made my stomach twist, "she can't do it all alone."

I stopped walking.

What did he mean by that? I frowned, trying to understand where this was going.

"The role of Luna is demanding. It requires someone who can handle the political pressures, the pack dynamics, the constant demands on their time and energy. And Sera has been shouldering that burden for three years without the actual title or authority to back her up." He paused. "I think it's time we fixed that. Time we gave her the support she deserves."

My chest loosened a little. Okay. He was building up to it. Making sure everyone understood why it took so long.

"Which is why I'm pleased to announce that Elara Vance will serve as Luna of Blackwater Pack."

The words didn't make sense at first.

Then they did.

The hall erupted in applause.

Elara walked up from the opposite side of the crowd wearing white. An actual white dress like this was her wedding day. She climbed the platform steps and Kane took her hand, raised it high for everyone to see. The pack cheered louder.

Not Second Luna. Not support. THE Luna. My position. The title I'd been working toward for three years.

He'd given it to her.

I turned around and left before anyone could see my face.

Nobody stopped me.

I made it to the corridor before my legs gave out. My back hit the wall and I slid down, hands pressed over my mouth to keep the sound inside. If I started screaming now I wouldn't be able to stop.

Three years. Three years of him telling me to be patient, to prove myself, to show the pack I was capable. Three years of doing every single thing he asked. And he'd just handed my position to the woman he'd been fucking behind my back.

I couldn't get enough air.

Footsteps echoed down the corridor.

I looked up. Elara stood there in her white dress, face carefully arranged like she gave a shit about how I was feeling.

"Sera, I wanted to check on you—"

"Get away from me."

"I know this is difficult, but you have to understand Kane's position. The pack needs strong leadership, and he's trying to do what's best for—"

"I said get the fuck away from me."

Something shifted in her expression. The fake sympathy disappeared and I saw what was actually there. She'd won and she knew it.

"You really should try to handle this maturely," she said, and her voice was different now. Sharper. "Kane made the right choice for the pack. Surely even you can see that."

"I've been doing everything he asked for three years."

"You've been trying," Elara said. "I'll give you credit for that. You really gave it your best shot." She stepped closer. "But let's be realistic here, Sera. You were never actually going to be Luna. An omega playing dress-up, hoping everyone would be polite enough to pretend they didn't notice what you really are."

The words hit me in the chest. I felt my claws starting to come out and I forced them back.

"Kane marked me. We're mated."

"Kane marked an omega," Elara said. "Did you honestly think the pack was going to accept that? An omega Luna?" She smiled, small and cruel. "You've been patient, I have to admit. Three whole years of waiting for something you were never going to get. But it's over now. Kane chose me. The pack chose me. Time to accept reality."

"He's my mate."

"And he's my Alpha." Her hand moved down to rest on her stomach. Just sat there, casual. "I'm carrying his child, Sera. The pack's heir. So tell me, what exactly are you bringing to this relationship?"

Everything stopped.

The noise from the ceremony faded out. The corridor went silent. All I could see was Elara's hand on her stomach and that small, satisfied smile on her face.

"You're lying."

"Am I?" She shrugged. "You should ask him yourself. I'm sure he was planning to tell you eventually. When the time was right." She turned to leave, then paused. "Oh, and Sera? You might want to start looking for somewhere else to stay. It's going to get awkward once I'm showing."

Then she walked back toward the ceremony and I was left standing there trying to process what she'd just said.

LyraThe guards cleared their throats and announced, "Miss Nadia Voss."I froze, my fork hovering over the plate. I looked up to see her standing there, and my heart skipped a beat.Nadia never came through the front door. She always went straight to my room, a habit that had become as natural as breathing. The dining room was on the opposite side of the castle from my quarters. Seeing her here, now, in this public space, was utterly unexpected. It wasn't that I had forgotten she was coming. It was that she had never once, not in all our time together, walked through that door.Odile's head snapped up, her eyes locking onto Nadia's figure. A slow smile spread across her face as she turned to me, and I could see her nose twitching slightly as she breathed in, catching a scent on the air. Her smile widened.I felt my cheeks flush as she leaned in close, whispering, "Is that your girlfriend?"I whipped my head around, checking to make sure no one else had heard. My father and mother were

Lyra"We should eat," Odile said, already sliding into the chair beside me.Father cleared his throat behind me. "Lyra, is that any way to greet your old man?"I winced at his deliberately fatherly tone. My mood soured. I turned to see him flashing that same annoying, knowing smile. "What, you can't even spare a hello for your favorite parent? Surely you can't hate me that much."A laugh bubbled up in my throat, bitter and sharp. I swallowed it down with a tight mouth. No use getting dramatic in front of strangers. I crossed to him with measured steps, sank into a shallow curtsy. "My king.""Better," he said, cupping my elbow, pulling me up. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm famished."I watched him for a moment, trying not to stare too long. It still didn't feel right, having him here, surrounded by the warmth of this makeshift family. I turned to my mother, who hadn't looked up once since I entered."Mother?" I called. No response. She shoveled food into her mouth with single-minded fo

LyraI stepped into the dining room, expecting the usual tedious affair, my parents, myself, and a handful of sycophants vying for my father's attention. Instead, a dozen unfamiliar faces greeted me, all eyes trained on the doorway I had just entered through.Odile stood immediately, beaming. "Lyra!" she called, already crossing the room toward me.I stared, bewildered, as she closed the gap and pulled me into a fierce hug. My whole body went still for a beat before I caught myself and hugged her back. "What are you doing here?" I asked, my voice coming out more breathless than I meant it to."Oh!" Odile laughed, releasing me from her embrace. "My brothers and I decided to pay your father a visit. The boys have been dying to see him."I glanced toward the table, taking in the two men Odile referred to as her brothers. They were visibly older, their faces lined with maturity and experience. It didn't add up. Odile talked about them like they were still boys, but they looked like grown

  • My Second Chance Mate is a Barbarian    415 A Little Under The Weather

LyraI woke abruptly, like I had been startled from a dream, but couldn't remember dreaming at all. Morning light streamed through the gaps in my curtains, painting the room in pale, diffused color. A soft knock came at the door."Princess?" Sela's voice called in. "Breakfast."I groaned and pushed myself up. "Entrez."The heavy door swung open and Sela slipped inside, a silver tray balanced on one hand. She was one of the few people allowed to enter my quarters unannounced, and for that, I was grateful. It's a small thing, but small things matter when you're stuck in this godforsaken palace."Morning, Sela," I said, dragging the covers off and planting my feet on the floor.Sela set the tray down on the small table by the window. "Morning, Princess. Tea?""Please."She nodded, pouring a steaming cup. I took it from her, wrapping my hands around the warm ceramic. The scent of bergamot and lemon filled the air, familiar and comforting. I took a sip, letting the heat soak into my bones.

NadiaI slipped out of the hospital, no one paying me much attention. I started walking, no particular hurry, when a gleaming black car rolled up beside me. The window slid down, and Lord Aldous's face appeared, a warm smile creasing his weathered features."Nadia! Where are you headed?""The palace," I said. "I'm on my way to see Lyra.""Well, I'm headed the same way myself. Hop in."I climbed in and shut the door behind me. The interior smelled faintly of leather and pine."So how have you been, my girl?" he asked, pulling back into traffic."Busy," I said, and smiled. "You'd think working at the library would be quiet, but somehow it never is."He laughed. "Ah yes, the great peril of literacy. What is it this time, an uprising of overdue notices?""Worse. Someone tried to return a book with a sandwich pressed inside it as a bookmark."That drew a real laugh out of him, warm and easy. "A sandwich. Please tell me it was at least a good sandwich.""I have no idea. I was too busy tryin

NadiaMama rushed to Father's side, shoving past the nurses and doctors in her way. Their voices faded, replaced by the sound of my mother's weeping. Two female nurses tried to restrain her, but Mama fought them, tearing at the sheet draped over Father's still body."Let me go!" she screamed, pulling with all her might. "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry, I'm sorry!"A nurse, tall with curly brown hair, tried to grip Mama's arms. "Please, ma'am," she said firmly. "You can't disturb the body."Mama didn't seem to hear her. She kept pulling, kept crying, that terrible, rending wail pouring out of her. I could barely comprehend the words. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I should have stayed, I should have stayed."The sheet finally gave way, sliding from Father's body to the floor. Mama collapsed on top of him, her arms around his lifeless frame. She pressed her face to his chest, her thin shoulders heaving. "I'm so sorry, I should have stayed," she sobbed.I watched, unmoving.Mama's cries left me cold. A

SeraNight fell fast, and with it, the temperature plummeted. We had three fires going, but the heat didn't seem to travel more than six inches past the flames. I sat on a log by the middle fire, pulling the wagon fur around my shoulders, shivering so hard my teeth were literally clicking together.
