He raised me like a daughter. Fate made me his mate. Rosie spent her life under Alpha Nicolas Hickman’s protection—the cold, powerful man she once called “Uncle.” She never expected the mate bond to tie her to him. She wants him to claim her. He refuses. Not because he doesn’t want her, but because danger follows her like a shadow—and loving her could get her killed. But Rosie is done waiting.

I did something bad.
Okay, not that bad, but I was throwing a party for my uncle, Nicolas Hickman, the Alpha of the Midnight Pack, and he hated parties.
“Do you think my uncle will find a second mate tonight?” I asked, checking my makeup as I spoke to my best friend, Chris. She was struggling to get into a tight, red dress.
"I wonder if the two of us could find mates tonight." Her face brightened with the thought.
Tonight marked the tenth anniversary of my uncle, Nicolas, the 35-year-old Alpha, taking power. I sighed, though I let my mouth quirk up a bit on one side. "It's not really about that for me, Chris."
When I was 10, my father, Mason Blake, Beta at the time, died in a war while saving the Alpha. My father entrusted me to him, and I was raised in the palace, calling him “Uncle.”
Now at 17, although I once hated his domineering nature, I’d learned that his mate had passed away.
I've tried to be a good girl ever since, feeling that I must help him find a second mate before I find my own and leave him.
"I know. You don't want to leave your uncle all alone when you find a mate." Chris patted me on the head, and I rolled my eyes at her.
“He’s done a lot for me. You know that,” I argued, pushing past her and toward the door. Electronic music was drifting up from the party already. I bet some guests were arriving by now.
Chris followed me, tousling her blonde hair in that sensual way that drove all the pack boys crazy. “I know he has. But I’m more interested to see if your little party loosens him up for a change.”
I hooked my arm in hers as we made our way downstairs, the music now pumping in our ears. I hoped Uncle would appreciate the attempt either way.
As my heels touched the wood flooring at the base of the stairs, I gripped Chris harder.
What was supposed to be a small party had turned into a full-blown pack celebration. "My Goddess! He's going to murder me," I leaned over to whisper, but Chris was already letting go and heading to mingle with the dozens of others flooding in.
I hurried to catch up as she approached another one of our friends, Tyler, whom she said on multiple occasions was one of the hottest wolves in the pack.
He did have those green eyes going for him, but I didn’t see what the fuss was all about otherwise.
"This is going to be one wild party," he said, making me grit my teeth at the prospect.
"That's not what it was supposed to be," I hissed.
Tyler reached out past Chris and placed a hand on my shoulder. Chris had been trying to tell me Tyler had a crush on me, but I had ignored it. Though now, as he tried to give me a reassuring rub, I began to wonder if it was true.
"It turns out everyone wants a shot at finding their mate."
Was that disappointment I detected in his voice?
I didn't have time to think too hard on it as I spotted the door through the crowd. My gut dropped as I watched my sworn rival, Vivian, walk in with her group.
I shrugged Tyler off as politely as I could to head towards her. Maybe I could get rid of her before she made this any more of a disaster.
Vivian arrogantly greeted me, her nose in the air as usual. "Look, if it isn't the little, ugly one. This is your party, right? Shouldn't you be serving me?"
I shook my head, anger rising and coloring my cheeks. Mia, my wolf, growled softly in my head. "I'm no less than you. Serve yourself."
She laughed and looked at her crew to back her up. They always did what she wanted. "That will most certainly change when I'm Luna. Isn’t this all about your uncle finding a mate?"
"Don't even dream it, Viv," I spat with as much vitriol as both my wolf and I could muster. I would never see her as Luna.
Vivian could never be Uncle Nicolas' mate. Never.
Chris slid up next to me like my own personal knight as Vivian rolled her eyes and walked away. I sagged. "I hate her."
"I know, but she's just trying to get under your skin."
I straightened up, knowing I needed to make this party a success. I planned it, and now I needed to own it.
"Okay, can you start greeting guests and being a good co-host? I need to check in with Marco."
Chris winked at me and sashayed to the door as I found a spot off to the side to mind-link to the Beta I had entrusted with getting the Alpha to the party.
'Hi! Is the Alpha done with his patrol yet?' I asked, popping into Beta Marco's thoughts. I could feel his hesitation, though.
Marco, like a brother to me, always listened to what I said. But when I’d told him about the party, he believed it wasn’t a good idea. He had warned, "Listen, Pumpkin, I get what you’re trying to do. It’s just that Alpha doesn’t even celebrate his birthday.”
I had begged him to bring Alpha to the party despite this.
‘Almost,’ Marco responded, a little clipped.
‘Is something wrong?’ I asked through the link.
‘I've heard a lot more people are there than should be. Word has gotten around, and everyone wants to find a mate there. You know that if the Alpha gets angry, I'll claim I knew nothing about this.’
‘It'll be fine. Just make sure he gets here.’ With that, I cut Marco off.
Uncle hadn’t seen me in two months due to work; he wouldn’t be mad, right? Plus, I had gotten my wolf, Mia, last month—he’d be happy to hear that. Proud, even.
I could feel Mia getting excited at the prospect of meeting and pleasing her Alpha.
"See, it'll be great," I told her, more confidence than I'd had in the last fifteen minutes coursing through me.
Just then, a refreshing scent of cedar and cypress filled the air, making Mia and me both excited. It was like nothing I'd ever smelled but reminded Mia of a good run.
‘Mate!’ Mia shouted in my mind.
Mate!?
My world had shifted, but the party seemed to stay exactly the same. Nobody could feel the change in energy but me.
I looked toward the door just as Uncle stepped in.
Our gazes met, and for a moment, we both froze.
Rosie’s POVChris gasped. Tyler grinned. Vivian rolled her eyes so hard I thought they might get stuck.Chris bumped me with her elbow. “This is big, babe. Huge.”My heart thumped loud and fast against my ribs as I nodded and accepted the assignment with what I hoped looked like confidence and not sheer panic. I would be responsible for the safety of more than myself. I should be grateful for the chance, the belief in my abilities which I hate begged him for.And I had to report directly to him afterward. The man who’d—I shoved the memory of the dream out of my head so hard I nearly gave myself whiplash.Tyler jogged over afterward to congratulate me."Any advice?" I asked him, forcing a grin too wide. “Just stay alert. Watch for movement near the borders—especially unfamiliar scents. If anything feels off, report it without hesitation. You'll do fine.” he ruffled my hair, and it reminded me of Uncle again. Ugh.“Thanks, Ty."Chris was twirling exuberantly next to me. She always had
Rosie’s POVHis lips were softer than I’d imagined. He didn't rush it as the kiss deepened. It was everything I wanted and more. He pulled back just slightly to search my face. “Are you ready?” he’d whispered. “This can’t be undone.” Though, his gravelly voice sounded as if it would kill him to stop."I want this." My fingers are threading into his hair. His restraint was gone. His hands slid down my waist and my hips. I grabbed at his shorts, tugging them down to the sound of his aroused growl. I could feel his hardness against me. It made me both blush and yearn for him with every part of my body. “Please,” I whimpered with a quiver, the teasing of his touches and closeness almost too much. When he finally pinned me beneath him, his weight settled over mine, and I swore it was like a perfect fit. A jolt of electricity paired with a heart pooling within my core.I held onto his neck, my nails digging into the skin slightly. This was happening. “You’re mine,” he said, sliding in
Nikolas’ POVA rose in fresh ink curled along the pale underside of her skin. It looked delicate, but bold. A little wild. Suddenly, it didn't matter that I was about to scold her for being home late. The scent of roses lingered in the air around her. It was impossible to ignore. I had lost myself, telling her it was beautiful and watching her blush. Saint surged so suddenly I nearly staggered backwards trying not to meet her lips with mine. It had been too close. 'Ours. She’s ours. Mark her!' Saint hollered within. “Is something wrong?” she asked once she realized there would be no kiss. Her pulse fluttered beneath my thumb, and I realized with horror that I was still holding her wrist. Still touching her like she was my mate rather than my responsibility.I let go quickly then, stepping back. “Nothing, you should rest and stop coming back so late. Your training will intensify since you're going to be doing patrols.”She nodded but made no arguments about my sudden distance, tho
Rosie’s POVI switched seats with Chris as Tony let out a scoff. “Alpha was a regular you know. Mostly because he would love to come in and celebrate any big moment in his life with some ink.”I watched him carefully as Chris prepared to get her butterfly. His eyes grew distant. “Came in with a busted lip and a bloody grin one time when he was really young. I'm pretty sure it was after his first patrol.”I tried to imagine that kind of exuberance from Uncle as I offered my hand to Chris. She declined as she whistled. "Wow. I did not see that coming. All he cares about now is attendance."Tony chuckled. “He was always serious, but, back then, he laughed more. The best piece I ever did was for him and his mate, our past Luna Diane. A beautiful piece. I was nervous as hell because it was one of my first big jobs. A full moon cradling two wolves.” I could feel a sadness drift over the room. "He hasn’t come back since she passed.”I knew he'd lost her when I was a child. Pairing it with th
Rosie’s POVAt dinner, I held out my wrist across the dinner table, frowning at the thin pink scar that curled along my skin. “No matter how much concealer I use, it still shows.”Chris leaned over, fork halfway to her mouth. “You’re being dramatic. It’s not that bad.”“I think scars from battle are kind of badass,” Tyler said, trying way too hard to sound casual as he flexed his arm, pulling up the sleeve of his shirt. “Look—Rogue ambush during my first patrol.”Chris and I squinted at the faint, barely-there mark on his shoulder.“That’s a mosquito bite, Tyler,” Chris said flatly.I raised an eyebrow, and Chris added, “What’d you do? Trip over your own ego and fall onto a rock?”Tyler groaned. “Wow. I open up and get roasted. This is why I have trust issues.”Chris cackled, and even I cracked a smile. Tyler was sweet. Comforting. But whenever I looked at him too long, my mind compared him to the image of a man who had rejected whatever he felt for me.“Anyway,” Chris continued, sla
Rosie’s POVI woke to Mia’s voice, my wolf hissing in my mind, ‘Wake up. Training time.’I groaned and sat up.. A dull itch gnawed at me. Peeling away the bandages, I winced at the sight of a faint silver-pink scar trailing my left wrist. Mostly healed, but still there. Ugly. Permanent.I dressed quickly, choosing long sleeves to cover it. I found the pack already gathering on the training field, but at least I wasn't late today. ‘Thank goddess,’ Mia commented, and I snorted at her.Uncle stood in the center, all hard angles and authority, arms crossed over his broad chest. His presence dominated the space—Alpha, warrior, legend. And the man who'd once rocked me to sleep after nightmares. The two images were hard to bring together into one cohesive thought.“Rogue activity has increased near the borders,” he announced, not waiting a second for stragglers. “As of today, everyone trains harder and longer. Even those still early on in training will take part in patrols. Patrols will
