Chapter 1

While my wife, Audrey Kates, stayed by her first love, Gavin Shaw’s hospital room, I lay on a cold operating table.

I was hopelessly waiting for my death.

Tubes ran through my entire body as the monitors beeped like a countdown to death. That sound reminded me that it was time to go. My heart finally went flat on the EKG.

Meanwhile, Gavin’s team reported a successful surgery. The emergency light over the operating room went dark. My eyes closed for good.

Perhaps I had so much anger and bitterness when I died that my soul ended up right next to Audrey.

My heart sank as I watched Audrey hold Gavin with teary eyes. He had narrowly escaped death.

I wanted to ask her whether she even worried if I would make it out alive when Gavin and I were wheeled into surgery at the same time.

The obvious answer was no. After all, she took me to court over Gavin’s illness.

She hired the most famous lawyer in the field. Through her lawyer’s efforts, I lost my case.

When my kidney was removed, I was in so much pain that my back was soaked with sweat as I lay on the operating table.

I called her and begged, “Dear, I’m sorry, alright? Please don’t take my kidney. I’m in so much pain. I’m going to die!”

I had never backed down before. But I thought that if I gave in this time and took the blame for everything I did not do, perhaps she would spare my life for the sake of our five-year relationship.

But Audrey just sneered and said, “Admitting you’re wrong is the least you can do. It’s an honor to save Gavin’s life. Don’t think you can weasel your way out of this. And don’t even think for a moment that giving him your kidney means you’re off the hook for an apology. In all these years, you’ve hurt him repeatedly. Once he’s better, you and I are going to settle the score.

“You want to die? Sure! But you have to apologize to Gavin first.”

I wanted to tell her I never did those things. But I was too weak.

Audrey, as if still not satisfied, said to me viciously, “The way you look right now disgusts me!”

My heart sank when she hung up. My five years of affection for her vanished.

Audrey told me I disgusted her. On our wedding day, she swore she would love me for a lifetime. I was her first choice and exception.

But once Gavin appeared, she forgot about me, her own husband.

She gently caressed Gavin’s face as if he were something delicate.

“Thank goodness you’re alive!”

Her choked voice and tired eyes told me that Audrey had stayed up all night because of Gavin.

But while she was worrying about Gavin, had she thought about the fact that I was dead?

Gavin said weakly, “Audrey, I’m sorry for making you worry. Where’s Jasper? Is he still mad at me? I’ll apologize to him right now.”

With that, he tried to stand up.

Anyone could see right through that performance, just not Audrey.

As expected, Audrey gently guided Gavin back down. She patted his head affectionately.

“Oh, you silly goose! Jasper is the one who should apologize. You didn’t do anything wrong. You’re always so kind. People will take advantage of you.”

The nurse watched the two of them and could not help but tease them.

“You two are so cute together.”

Then, she looked at Gavin.

“While you were in surgery, your wife waited in the hallway all night. She didn’t leave for a second.”

Gavin blushed. Audrey paused for a moment. She did not plan to correct the misunderstanding.

Then, the nurse changed the subject and sighed deeply.

“Unlike the patient on the next table over… He came in all alone and passed away. No family member even came to claim his body. It’s so sad.”

Audrey’s face softened. That sparked my hope again.

If she realized the pitiful person was me, would she be kind enough to claim my body?

After a long pause, Audrey sighed and said, “That’s indeed sad.”

The hope in my heart faded. I laughed bitterly at myself.

Audrey was head over heels for Gavin. Why would she ever think of me?

She did not continue. Instead, she followed the nurse and pushed Gavin into the hospital room.

As she walked past the operating room where my body was, she stopped. She glanced inside.

There I was, lying cold and dead. My feet were pointed toward the door, so my face was not visible.

But if she had looked closer, she would have seen the wound on my ankle. I got that when saving her.

Miranda sat up and laughed mockingly.“Yeah. Why wasn’t it you who died instead?”Before leaving, Miranda warned Audrey. She told her to repair my grave. If she did not, Miranda would pull every string she had to bring the Kates family down.I did not know what Audrey was thinking. She lay on the ground for a long time. The night breeze blew the little strands of hair across her forehead. It reminded me of the time we went camping together. The stars that night had been more beautiful than this.It was on that very night that Audrey had looked at me and asked, “Jasper, will you marry me?”It went from like to love, and from love to hate. All of that happened in just five years. That was way too fast. Then, Audrey stood up. She bit her finger and wrote on the headstone with her blood.[The Gough Couple]She lay down in the hole she had dug for herself. She smiled in relief as she took out a knife and cut her wrist.I watched the blood that kept flowing from her wrist with a f

Audrey lived in a daze for two months. She went out frequently and came home exhausted every time.My soul was growing weaker. I could not withstand direct sunlight. So, I had no idea what Audrey was doing outside.Late one night, Audrey went out, and I followed her. We arrived at a cemetery.I saw the words engraved on a headstone.[Jasper Gough [Beloved Husband of Miranda Wenzel]Only then did I realize that Audrey had been going out recently to find my grave. But when we saw the headstone, both Audrey and I were shocked. She was furious, while I only felt a bitter ache in my heart. The truth was, nothing ever happened between Miranda and me. We both knew we would never work out. So, we just kept those feelings buried.Only when Audrey appeared in my life was I able to forget my puppy love for Miranda.I already felt guilty toward Miranda. She was one of the few people who was ever kind to me without wanting something in return. This grave actually made me feel like I fin

Even when Gavin died, Audrey did not have much of a reaction. She simply nodded to the person who informed her.She was desperately trying to find my body. But what difference would it make even if she found it?She rummaged through the entire house before she finally found Miranda’s phone number. When the call went through, Audrey asked anxiously, “Where’s Jasper?”Miranda seemed much calmer. She neither lashed out with harsh words nor interrogated Audrey. She smiled helplessly.“I thought you’d never think of Jasper for the rest of your life. You were too busy tending to your precious lover. I guess Jasper’s death finally knocked some sense into you, huh?”Audrey ignored her words and just repeated her question.Miranda said coldly, “If you’re so capable, come find him yourself. But honestly, I don’t think Jasper would want to see you.”She was right. I did not want to see Audrey. She did not care whether I lived or died. She never trusted me, not even once. What was there l

After saying that, the nurse left without paying any more attention to Audrey.Audrey stood there frozen for a long time.Perhaps she remembered the last phone call I had made to her while I was lying on the operating table in complete despair, or maybe she recalled the day Miranda walked past her with my body.Audrey bolted out of the hospital like a madwoman. She went to Gavin’s place.I found that amusing. I thought that when she found out I was dead, she would at least feel some guilt. But to her, even dead, I could not measure up to Gavin. When she got to the apartment, the door was still halfway open. She heard voices coming from inside, and she paused.“Are you guys ever going to stop? Haven’t we already paid you? Keep this up, and I’m calling the cops!”Gavin’s aggressive voice came through. Audrey instinctively wanted to push the door open. Just as she placed her hand on the doorknob, a man inside let out a cold laugh.“You think twenty thousand dollars is enough to ge

When Gavin saw that Audrey was serious, he softened his tone and said, “Audrey, let’s just start over. Pretend you were never married. Just pretend I never betrayed you. I truly love you.”He knew just the way to comfort her, and she always fell for his charm every single time. When it came to me, I could use every trick I had, yet she would not so much as crack a smile for me.It was so obvious when someone loved the person and when they did not. But I was stupid enough to only see it after I died. That woman who never cracked a smile for me was always gentle with the other man. She kept lowering her standards for Gavin. I felt a dull ache in my heart. But the truth was, I did not care anymore how Gavin slandered me or how much Audrey hated me.“You just got out of the hospital. You should get some rest.”She did not answer his question directly. Instead, she pushed him away and left without looking back. After Audrey left, Gavin stomped his foot in frustration.Once she re

After Gavin spent a month in the hospital, Audrey came to pick him up as he was getting discharged. When I died, only Miranda showed up. But Gavin’s hospital room was packed. All his friends and family crowded inside. They were delighted when Audrey walked in.“Ms. Kates, when are you going to marry Gavin? Look how worried you are about him! Gavin’s such a lucky boy.”Gavin lowered his head and said sheepishly, “Don’t say that. Audrey’s already married! I don’t want Jasper to get the wrong idea about us when he hears this. I don’t want to be the other man either. Otherwise, he’ll make things hard for me again.”One of his friends said sarcastically, “What’s so great about a petty guy who only knows how to get jealous? Audrey loves you! The one who isn’t loved is the real third wheel. Besides hurting you, what else can he even do? If I were her, I would’ve divorced him a long time ago.”I found that laughable. Was I really this third wheel? That was so typical of Gavin. He alway
