Chapter 1

In the study, Owen Wright, my father-in-law, asked again, "What about Joel? He just had surgery."

Calista Wright didn't answer immediately. Eventually, she said, "I'll make it up to him."

Owen sighed. "That's not the same as love."

Calista's voice remained even as she declared, "All he wants is to be the Wright family's son-in-law anyway."

I braced myself against the wall, my fingers slowly turning cold.

So, in her eyes, the three years I'd spent waiting for her were nothing more than a display of my materialistic greed—that I simply wanted to be associated with the Wrights.

Instead of barging into the study, I turned around and went back to the bedroom. On the nightstand lay the notice for my follow-up appointment at the hospital, which I'd picked up earlier that morning.

The doctor's note read, "Poor recovery following gastric perforation surgery. Patient is advised to return to the hospital for examination, accompanied by a family member."

Calista didn't know about this. On the day of my follow-up appointment, she spent all her time accompanying my brother, Tyler Wright, on his apartment hunt.

At 11:00 pm, she opened the bedroom door and frowned when she noticed I hadn't turned off the lights.

"Why aren't you asleep yet?" she asked.

I looked at the watch on her wrist. "Did your heart rate spike today?"

Her hands paused in the middle of removing her earrings.

"What was that?"

I picked up my spare phone and pulled up a screenshot of the data from her fitness watch.

"136. 132. 140," I read out before asking Calista a question. "Calista, doesn't your heart get tired whenever you see my brother?"

Calista's eyes flashed with an emotion, but it wasn't panic—it was displeasure.

"You went through my things?"

"I heard you."

After two seconds of silence, she asked, "How much did you hear?"

I pointed at my own chest. "Enough for my heart to feel dead inside."

Calista sat down in front of me. "Joel, the situation back then wasn't as simple as you think."

"How complicated was it?"

"Your family couldn't have stayed afloat for much longer."

"So you chose to marry me?" I asked.

"I've also done my duty as your wife," she said.

I slapped the follow-up notice down in front of her. "So as my wife, your duty was to let me go to the hospital for my follow-up appointment alone while you shopped for apartments with my brother?"

Calista glanced at the notice before quickly averting her gaze. "You didn't tell me about it."

"I didn't tell you that I needed to go for follow-up appointments after my gastric perforation surgery?"

When she said nothing, I continued, "When I was in the middle of surgery, your heart rate remained at 68. Was that also because I didn't tell you how much pain I was in?"

Frowning, Calista snapped, "Joel Manning! Stop using your surgery to start a fight with me."

"Weren't you the one who signed the consent form for my surgery?" I pointed out.

She swallowed hard, and after a long pause, she finally said in a quiet voice, "It's all in the past now."

The silence in the bedroom grew deafening.

At that very moment, her phone rang, and Tyler's name appeared on the screen. She glanced at it, then swiftly took the call.

I couldn't hear what he said, but her brows creased as she said, "Don't panic. I'll be right over."

She ended the call and picked up her coat.

"What's going on with him?" I asked.

"He's feeling unwell because of his low blood sugar."

"Were you this worried about me when I was in surgery?"

Calista turned to look at me, her eyes slightly weary. "Joel, you used to be very thoughtful and understanding."

She came back over and reached out to cup my cheek. "I know you can handle the pain. It's not the same with him."

I dodged her hand. "You know what I find most disgusting about you, Calista? It's the fact that even when you're showering all your love on him, you expect me to preserve your dignity for you."

Her expression turned cold. "We'll talk when I get back."

The door closed with a soft click. I sat on the bed, completely wide awake.

Ten minutes later, Tyler posted on social media. It was a photo of him sitting in Calista's car with a cup of hot chocolate in his hands.

Calista was in the driver's seat, her side profile looking perfectly calm. Her wedding ring was also clearly visible on her finger.

The caption read, "Some people never profess their love, but they will always show up."

I tapped on the like button.

Three minutes later, Tyler deleted the post and messaged me.

"Please don't misunderstand, Joel. Since I just moved back here, there was no one else I could turn to for help."

I replied, "There's nothing for me to misunderstand. You've always had people to fuss over you."

The notification at the bottom kept showing that Tyler was typing, but I didn't bother looking at the chat again.

A year later, Atelier J opened its second location. The new shop was at the end of a street with a rich history. A row of wind chimes hung above the entrance, tinkling whenever the breeze blew.On opening day, Nerissa was on her feet the whole time. Eventually, she had to lean against the counter to catch her breath. I handed her a glass of water."You've been a huge help, Ms. Landlady."She took the water while raising her brows. "Am I just your landlady?"I started going through the sales records. "And business partner.""Nothing else?"I pretended not to hear her. She laughed and didn't press me.By evening, the last customers had left. I saw Calista standing outside the shop. She stood beneath a streetlight, her wrist bare. The fitness watch was gone.Since I last saw her a year ago, she had lost a lot of weight. She looked much more reserved. The aloofness she once carried, the kind that seemed to put her above everyone else, was gone.Calista entered the shop, but she di

It was raining heavily on the day of our divorce hearing.Calista sat on the other side of the courtroom. She had lost a lot of weight and had prominent dark circles beneath her eyes. When the judge asked whether we both agreed to the divorce, I replied, "Yes."Calista turned toward me and stared for so long that the judge had to ask her again. Only then did she say quietly, "Yes."My heart didn't ache at those words. I felt only relief, like I was peeling off an uncomfortably itchy sweater. After leaving the courthouse, I found Nerissa waiting for me outside. She stood at the bottom of the steps with an umbrella in hand.Calista came after me. "Joel."Once I stopped in my tracks, she took out a ring box. Inside it were our wedding rings. The engraving on the inside of the bands read, "Calista and Joel, Always and Forever."When I first saw the inscription all those years ago, I stayed up all night, giddy with joy."Throw them away."Calista's fingers trembled. "They're our w

The next time Calista went to the Manning residence, she brought along her copy of the investment agreement from three years ago.For the past three years, she had always labeled the transaction as her way of helping the family out. However, from the moment I left with my suitcase, she finally saw the situation for what it truly was.She hadn't just lent the Mannings a hand. She'd used 30 million dollars and the marriage to me to preserve Tyler's dignity. When Gloria saw Calista come in, she shot to her feet and said, "Calista, you came at the right time. Joel has gotten too big for his britches. He doesn't even want his own family anymore. You mustn't indulge him. Ever since he was a kid, he's always been easy to convince if you appeal to his emotions anyway."Calista slapped the agreement down on the table, and Gloria's expression changed."What do you mean by this?""I was the one who signed this agreement back then," Calista said coldly. "I was the one who transferred the mon

Nerissa's property on the south side of the city was tucked away in a quiet alley. It was a quaint-looking house with brick walls, wooden doors, and a pomegranate tree out in the garden. Though a little dated, it was a cozy home in a peaceful setting. She placed the keys in my hand, saying, "The house is old, and the plumbing can get a little problematic sometimes. If you don't like it, you can still back out of the lease.""Do I get my deposit back?" I asked."No," she answered at once.Chuckling, I said, "Then I guess beggars can't be choosers."She laughed along with me."Alright then, Mr. CEO. I hereby wish you a pleasant stay at the shabbiest shack you've ever seen."The next day, I went to a wholesale market to get some leatherworking supplies. I'd taken a leatherworking course in the past. After I married Calista, she said leatherworking was exhausting and barely made any money, so I didn't pursue a career in it.Now that I was picking up the tools again, I felt a li

I walked out without looking back. Outside, a black SUV was waiting for me.Nerissa Dawson, who was leaning against the vehicle, spotted the suitcase I dragged out, but she didn't ask any questions. She simply opened the trunk."My property on the south side of the city is unoccupied right now. You can stay there for the time being.""I'll pay the regular rental rate," I said.Chuckling, Nerissa commented, "Despite falling on hard times, you're still very particular about these things, huh?"I shot her a look. "Was that the nicest remark you could come up with?""Of course not."She handed me a flask of hot tea, saying, "Have something warm. You look no better than a ghost right now."The car was exiting the neighborhood when Calista's call came in. When I rejected it, she called again. After the third call, I shut off my phone. For the first time, the city no longer felt like a cage.…Meanwhile, Calista stood in the empty bedroom. Half the closet was empty. The watches a

I looked down at the document. It was an investment agreement from three years ago, signed seven days before my wedding. It stated that Wright Group would invest 30 million dollars in Manning Corporation. The terms also clearly specified that as long as Calista and I remained married, Manning Corporation was entitled to continued financial support from Wright Group and would receive priority in business partnerships.Gloria's, Peter's, and Calista's signatures were all there on the last page.I thought back to the night before the wedding. Peter had picked out a tie for me, looking emotional as he said, "Joel, Calista is a good woman. Since she wants to marry you, it means she does care about you."Gloria had stood at the door, saying, "Once you marry Calista, make sure you make a good impression on the Wrights. With a family like theirs, you'll be set for life."At the time, I'd sobbed my heart out, thinking that my parents couldn't bear to part with me. But now it was clear to m
