What happens when fate and chance come knocking with a blank slate, a minute after you just felt a car climb over you? Jason ignored her. He humiliated her. He let their daughter almost drown while he played father to his mistress’ child. But when Molly died, fate gave her a second chance. This time, she would no longer be the obedient wife. This time, she’ll expose him, starting with the secret that has the potential to unravel every single crafted plan: She’s carrying his best friend’s child.

"Time of death," my voice rings through the operating room, with my eyes glued to the clock hanging above the gallery. "7:40 pm."
The limp body of a middle-aged woman lay on the bed, her face blocked away from view and her hands gripping the edges of the sheets as if she knew she was about to take her last breath.
“Clear this up,” my assistant lead surgeon murmurs, but the chatter doesn’t resume until we have all filed out of the room, leaving the nurses to take care of the rest. I move to the sink, ripping off my gloves before letting the cool water wash my hands.
I stare at my reflection in the mirror. Eye bags decorate my face, with an old acne scar I should have taken care of a while ago. There, I decide I am going to take the weekend off. Maybe go to Disneyland with my family.
A junior doctor pokes his head in. “Doctor Cross?”
“Yes?” I try to mentally run through all the schedules I have for the day. One more surgery to go, but it isn’t in another hour. God, I need to have another cup of coffee. “Another call?”
He shakes his head. "Your daughter called the hospital. She has been trying to reach you on your private line, but she said it hasn't been connecting."
"Eva?" My face scrunches into a frown. I check the time again. Strange. She is supposed to be preparing for bed right now, and that means no screen time. "Are you sure?"
He nods.
"Did she leave any other message?" I wipe my hands dry with a paper towel, shoving it into the trash can. My feet move mechanically.
“She said she was tired of waiting,” he says in one breath. “I think she’s still at school. Did you forget to get her because of all the surgeries you had to lead all day?”
I turn to look at him sharply, my eyes wide with surprise and a brewing anger. “What? She’s still at school?”
“It would seem that way,” the doctor stammers, not wanting to be caught in this crossfire.
Jason has got to be kidding me.
He doesn't come after me as I race to my office. My hands move for my phone as soon as I walk in, and I dial my husband's number, the first line on my speed dial. It rings thrice before it goes straight to voicemail.
In that split second, panic begins to course through me.
Pacing my office, I call my daughter next, praying that this is all some huge mix-up and that she is safe, her phone far away from her. My breath leaves my lips in short gasps as I wait for something.
Anything.
"Mummy?" Her tiny voice comes up. She sounds weary, and I can hear a rustle in the background. "Mummy, are you coming to get me?"
"Baby," I breathe, stopping in the middle of the office. "Where are you, honey? Where is your Daddy?"
"I haven't seen him," she responds, and I can imagine her shaking her head, her pigtails dancing around her. "And Mrs. Johnson said she's tired of waiting, too."
"I didn't say that," Mrs. Johnson, her homeroom teacher, says sharply. Her voice comes on the call a second later. “Mrs. Cross, I was only trying to tell Eva that it is late and I have to go home to my husband. I wouldn’t have minded taking Eva with me until you are done for the day, but I don’t know if you and your husband will…”
I shake my head disbelievingly, still quite confused about what is going on. "Mrs. Johnson, haven’t you seen Mr. Cross today? He was supposed to get Eva from school.”
“No, Mrs. Cross. He hasn’t been here today.”
My heart stops working. “So, who dropped her off at school?”
I have a very good guess.
My feet begin to move again, grabbing my keys from the table and charging through the door without bothering to change out of my scrubs. I race through the waiting room, the nurses there giving me a cursory glance.
That wasn’t new. It wasn’t the first time Eva was forgotten at school by her father, but each time, I hoped it was going to be the last.
"She said her name was Amanda," Mrs. Johnson continues, papers rustling on the other side. "The person who brought Eva to school. She left her contact information if we needed anything, and we have tried to contact her too about…"
“I’ll be right there,” I cut in suddenly, reaching the garage. It isn’t hard to find my car in a pool of others, and in a few seconds, I pull out of the garage, heading to my child’s school.
I meet her waiting out front, her teacher’s hands wrapped firmly around hers. When she sees me, she realises the tears she has probably been holding all evening.
“Oh my God!” I whisper, rushing towards her and pulling her into my arms. “Eva, I am so sorry. Mummy didn’t mean to leave you out here for so long.”
Mrs. Johnson doesn’t wait a minute more as she stalks into the distance, disappearing along with the sound of her heels hitting the ground. Eva looks up at me.
“Mummy, did Daddy forget to pick me up again?”
“No, honey.” I shake my head, uncertain if I am trying to convince Eva or myself. “He was just caught up at work and asked me to get you myself. I ended up forgetting.”
Eva doesn’t look like she believes me, but she nods and nestles her tiny palm in mine, allowing me to walk her to my car.
As I strap her in, the shrill of my phone disrupts the peace of the car. Sighing, I receive the call without looking at the caller ID, assuming it is one of the doctors reminding me of the last surgery of the day.
But her voice comes on the second I press the phone against my ears.
“Molly, do you know what time it is? Why on earth did you decide to call Jason this late?”
I blink. “Amanda?”
"Is that Molly?" I hear Jason ask in the background before taking the phone from her. "Molly, Amanda's child has been ill, and your call just woke her up. How will you take responsibility for that?"
Jason’s voice drones on, but all I can hear is Eva’s question echoing in my head. ‘Did Daddy forget me again?’
Only now, I am sure forgetting isn’t the worst thing he’s done.
“Hi son, oh it's you, how long have you been listening darling” “I was passing by when I heard voices. It was sounding like a dispute, I had to check”Richard shows concerns innocently. “Oh son, we are just having a bonding time. Molly is such a wonderful soul, we've been interacting for hours” Madeline says, patting my back in pretence while I just stand there watching Madeline perform. Richard is still acting nonchalant about my presence but this time, he is not even acknowledging me. “He keeps making me feel invisible”“Okay, mom, I was just concerned, you both have fun” He says, wearing a little smile. My heart skips. Richard exits the scene leaving Madeline and me to continue to “bond” while I'm already unstable because of Richard's depassion towards me, I lose interest in my confrontation with Madeline, while marvelling about the game Richard is trying to play. “This conversation shouldn't escape both of us. No one, I repeat, no one should be permitted to have a single d
TensionI’m in the state of denial and acceptance, “are my parents really concerned about making me happy or the financial gains for their personal interest. “Why would he say that I don’t even have a choice? No parent with genuine love will say such to his child.”While sobbing alone I get a call from Jason, but I’m too nonchalant to pick up, he sends an email and it reads; “Hey honey, I hope your day went well, we’re having a family gathering tomorrow at lunch, I would love you to be present, I order for you to bond with my family”. The information keeps me nervous, for a moment because I know being in that environment requires another type of toughness and strength that I’m not prepared for. “Getting close with Jason, the disgust!, confronting his Madeline, requires courage. Meeting Richard? Well, I guess that’s the only reason I should go, at least to see him again”.I debate with myself. I am finally concluding on meeting honouring his invitation, if not for anything for Rich
Morning arrives soft and familiar, draping the world in gold, the spark of sun piercing me deep into my eyes from a thin space through the curtain disturbs my sleep. “It’s Morning. I have to be in the hospital. My internship starts today.” I had almost forgotten about my schedule for today. My internship is for a year or less before I can be permanently recruited as a qualified doctor. I rolled to the edge of the bed reflecting on my experience for the previous day. It becomes a full dialogue with myself about how I rescued Richard from the pitfalls of Jason and his mom. I begin to panic again, because I’m aware of how much damage Jason and Madeline can cause to Richard, an image of Richard bowing in loyalty to my body to worship it as a goddess strikes me, there and then, I find myself smiling again with my body calling for him one more time. “Will this image ever exist in my mind” “Molly, sleepyhead, I don’t need a soothsayer to tell me you just woke up” Cassy barges into the r
“Madeline and Molly's pov“ I can see you're taking a walk around the environment you desire to enter even at 3 a.m? Well, a quick introduction. I am Madeline Cross, the woman who created the legacy you're desperately trying to dive into, look around you. I built this fortune in three decades, and any intruder must kowtow to me” she brags, squinting her eyes and pushing me to be intimidated. “My son is a co-founder of a well-known tech company in Santamonica, he shouldn't be found with a lowlife like you. This is ridiculously insane.“ she screams in disgust still trying to project an inferiority complex into me but I am already familiar with her ways and oppressive lifestyle. I twitch. Gazing at her courageously, which obviously makes her unstable. “Madeline, your son came for me, not the other way round. I mean you've seen how highly he worships the ground I step on, you shouldn't be prattling this hogwash to my present, you should go to him and tell him about your fear” I cuss a
Richard -Molly’s pov“You should go to bed now. I’d join Jason” I snap as I fasten my walkout of his room. “Do you really have to leave now stunner?” he tightens his hands around my waist and pulls me to himself, while gazing deep into my soul. “Richard, I think you're drunk, let's keep this for some other day” I stutter, trying to convince him, but I get distracted again by his stare. He isn't paying attention to me, he's earnestly lost in lust. He stares like he wants me consumed as soon as he can. “I don't know how many times you've been called a goddess, take it from me, you're magnificent. Your body is densely stimulating and pleasant. No one could ignore”.. He says, staring directly at my lips.I can feel my legs quivering, and my whole body trembling. This is so beautiful. “I haven't been stared at with so much love”. At this point, I find myself lifting my hand to his face, relaxing it on his beard. Richard brings me closer to himself, and I feel chills sending signals
Richard-molly’s pov “Yes Jason, I will be your woman”. I murmured, with my heart filled with hate and disgust masked with a majestic smile. Everyone present shows excitement and tries to congratulate us except Madeline, Madeline crosses. My proposed “mother-in-law”. “Let's have a dance my lady” Jason says while everyone is in a merry mood. I give in to having a dance with him while I quietly search for Richard. I ponder on his behalf because I'm aware of what has been planned for him. “And is my lady searching for anybody?” Jason whispers into my ear. He takes note of every move I make, even my body language.I notice Jason's men, whom he sends on wicked operations. They parade the whole place which obviously interpreted that they are here on a mission. Immediately it dawns on me that I have to look for Richard, I can't allow him to go through the wickedness of Madeline and her son Jason. “I have to use the restroom Jason, give me a moment babe” I say sweetly in his ear.
