[Ava’s POV]

I turn sharply, trying to make out the person who just ripped the bag away. Kyle stands there, his face dark, the same tight anger sitting in the line of his jaw.

His eyes move from the bag in his hand to Joseph and then back to me.

“Kyle, what are you doing?” I ask, my voice rising despite my effort to keep it low.

He hangs the bag at his side and looks at me like the answer should be obvious. “If I'm not here, would you just let him take you away?”

[Ava’s POV]I turn sharply, trying to make out the person who just ripped the bag away. Kyle stands there, his face dark, the same tight anger sitting in the line of his jaw. His eyes move from the bag in his hand to Joseph and then back to me.“Kyle, what are you doing?” I ask, my voice rising despite my effort to keep it low.He hangs the bag at his side and looks at me like the answer should be obvious. “If I'm not here, would you just let him take you away?”The words make my brows draw together. “What are you talking about? Joseph is my friend, and I need his help.”Kyle steps forward, closing some of the space between us. “I can help you too.”A short, disbelieving breath leaves me. The leftover heat from the argument with Sophie is still under my skin, and his sudden appearance only makes it worse. “Help me with what exactly? You’re literally at the bottom of the class. The only thing you do well is shine in sports. What makes you think you can help me with my studies?”Someth

[Ava’s POV]I stop in my tracks, the hallway suddenly feeling narrower than it did a second ago. Sophie’s words still hang in the air between us, sharp and accusing.“What do you mean by what did I tell Ryan?” I ask, my voice steadier than I feel. “What has he got to do with me?”Sophie steps forward, heels clicking against the tile, her eyes narrowed. “Oh, don’t play dumb. I know you’re still grovelling for him to come back to you. I just can’t stand how shameless you are.”Something hot flares in my chest. I step forward as well until we are almost the same distance apart. “Watch your words,” I say, each syllable clear. “I’m not like you, the kind who only knows how to recycle trash.”Sophie’s face turns a deep red. A few students nearby stop walking. Whispers ripple outward, followed by a couple of low laughs that make her shoulders stiffen even more. She glances down, and her eyes land on the jersey still clutched in my hands. Her lips curl. “Wow. Now you’ve even taken his jersey.

[Ava’s POV]My hands feel cold as I walk toward the principal’s office. The hallway seems longer than usual, and every step makes the knot in my stomach pull tighter. Whispers rise from a small group of students near the lockers.“Oh, now she’s gotten in trouble with the principal,” someone whispers from the crowd. I ignore the words and keep moving.“Yeah, she probably thought what she and Kyle had was real.”Soft laughter follows the words. I tighten my hands into fists at my sides and keep walking, trying my best not to let any of it settle under my skin. By the time I reach the heavy wooden door I have to force myself to knock.“Come in.”I step inside with my heart pounding steadily against my chest. Principal Harlan is seated behind his desk, speaking quietly to two students who look just as nervous as I feel. He glances up, then gestures toward the empty chair across from him, and I sit down carefully, placing my bag on the floor beside my feet. The other two students finis

[Ava’s POV]Ryan walks over, his steps heavy, and his eyes move from me to Kyle and then back again. The jersey is still warm in my hands, the scent of effort and whatever soap Kyle uses clinging to the fabric. My heart is already beating too fast from the game and the way Kyle handed it to me in front of everyone, but now it feels like it might climb straight into my throat.“I tolerated this the first day because I thought it was just a game, something to spite me,” Ryan says, his voice tight and rough. “But what are you doing standing here taking his jersey like you belong to him?”I step forward before Kyle can speak, my own voice sharper than I expect. “This is none of your business. I already told you I’m with Kyle now, so what are you still doing here?”Ryan’s jaw tightens. He looks past me toward Kyle, then back again. “Whatever game you people are playing is not going to work.” His eyes lock on mine. “Ava, if you think you can do this to make me jealous, you should know that

[Ava’s POV]I walk toward him without another word. The helmet is already in his hand, and I take it because I already know there is no winning an argument with Kyle West once he has decided something. I settle onto the back of the bike and wrap my arms around his waist. His body goes still for a second. From the side of his face I catch the edge of a slow, almost threatening smile before he faces forward again. I shake my head at him even though he cannot see it, and the engine growls to life beneath us.The ride is short. When he parks near the back entrance of the club I climb down and hand the helmet over. He keeps the bike running, watching me with that same calm expression.“You know you don’t have to do this, right?” he asks, voice low.“Don’t even start,” I answer, already turning away.He chuckles behind me. “Oh, don’t worry. I’m still willing to support you no matter your choice—”I do not let him finish. I keep walking toward the staff door. His voice follows me one last

[Ava’s POV]I stare at Kyle, still standing in the courtyard with his hands in his pockets and that unreadable expression on his face.“What could you possibly have to tell me?” I ask, my voice tighter than I want it to be.He steps closer and rests both hands lightly on my shoulders, the touch steady enough to keep me from moving away. A small smile pulls at the corner of his mouth.“Relax, little kitten,” he says, eyes warming just a fraction. “It’s just something that might make you a little happy.”I feel my brows draw together. The nickname catches me off guard more than the words themselves. I push lightly against his chest with one hand, trying to create space.“Just say it already.”Kyle reaches behind him and pulls out a folded piece of fabric. He holds it out toward me without another word. I take it carefully, still watching his face, then unfold the material. It is a jersey. His jersey. The name WEST is printed across the back above a bold number, the same one I have seen
