The first thing she heard was the sound of a vase breaking

She could make out the silhouette of a man from afar.

His movements were jittery, almost clumsy. He staggered

Not a single person made an attempt to stop him, not even Arman. Like it was something that happened often, something that they were used to

Luca's suit had been pulled off, his shirt was rumpled, his hair was messy and his eyes were dark and empty

He was making a mess of the place, he broke everything he could lay his hands on, and he was hurting himself in the process

Sharon froze when she saw him, her words got stuck in her mouth and she was terrified— for him

Arman stood at a distance holding his suit jacket, clearly giving him enough space

Sharon walked over the broken ceramic pieces on the floor, her eyes carried a mix of horror and concern

“Why”

she asked Arman, her voice barely audible

“It's his way of cooling off steam”

“When did it start?”

Arman looked away from her

“I'd rather not tell you that”

“Tell me, please”

Arman's face twisted, he tried his best not to look her in the face

“He started this when his grandfather announced his engagement to you. I thought he was going to stop

But it seems he's at it again”

“So basically it's— my fault”

“It's not”

“But it's not his fault either”

Sharon walked to her room not knowing what to make of the entire situation

They were both victims, they were both pawns in someone else's game—

Wait a second, was that sympathy she was feeling for him?

It didn't matter, he had no claim to her sympathy, he didn't deserve it. All he did was make her life miserable

And besides, she planned to kill him, she couldn't back down now because she pitied him

He could trash the whole house for all she cared, she knew what she wanted to do, and nothing was going to stop her

*********************

It was Claire's third time of visiting the Gray family mansion since the incident with Mrs Gray

Donald has asked a lot of crazy things from her, but this one had to be the craziest.

Funny enough, she was willing to go to any lengths to please him, and he knew it

There was no way Mrs Gray would trust her so easily, there was a reason she kept her scars hidden for so long

A woman with that kind of resolve wasn't easy to fool

So Claire had to plan it, step by step

On her first visit, she brought Mrs Gray flowers

Mrs Gray thanked her, but Claire knew she had a lond way to go

Claire always made sure she was in the Gray mansion whenever Mr Hillary had gone out.

That man was powerful enough to ruin her with a background search

On her second visit, Claire did the things that Sharon usually did at the house

Since Sharon got married, there was a hole that needed to be filled

By filling this role, Claire was able to gain Mrs Gray's trust to some extent

Claire got familiar with the servants, and even offered to assist them.

This was her third visit, and she knew she needed to orchestrate it perfectly

She baked a nice apple pie, and took it with her.

When she entered the house, Mrs Gray was seated, reading a book

“Good afternoon Mrs Gray”

Claire said excitedly

“Oh Claire, I'm very glad to see you, do have a seat”

Claire sat down nervously

“I'm not the best baker in the world, and my pastries would never be as good as what you're used to but—

I baked you some apple pie”

Mrs Emilia looked at the decorated cardboard box Sharon held in her hands

“Oh Claire, I'm going to eat it real slow because you made it”

They both giggled, then Mr's Gray's face morphed back to it's original expression

“I must ask though, why are you doing all of this for me?

I mean I have never done anything for you”

“Mrs Gray to be honest—”

“You're the closest thing to a mother I've had.”

Claire remembered her birth mother

But she could bring herself to mentally construct her face, she could remember what her mother looked like, she had no pictures of her either

But her mother was an alcoholic, and Claire's childhood was terrible

Her boyfriend raped her several times, and there was nothing she did to intervene

Absolutely nothing

Claire was a product of what society made her, but she wasn't going to tell Mrs Gray all that

The Grays believed she was from a prestigious family, and she was going to leave things the way they were

Claire continued

“My parents were rich, but my mother wasn't really “mother material” She was always working, candy she paid no attention to me.

Till she died, she didn't really know who I was. She never spent time with me enough to figure me out

And then it was too late”

“And your father?” Mrs Emilia asked feeling sorry for her

“They divorced, he died shortly after”

A tear slipped down Claire's cheeks

Mrs Emilia stood up, walked to her and used her napkin to wipe the tear away

Instinctively, Claire hugged her

“Mr's Gray, I don't want anything bad to happen to you. I've lost one mum, I cannot lose another

Mr's Gray tried to convince herself that she didn't understand what Claire was talking about, but alas, the girl knew

She broke the embrace

“Tell me Mrs Gray, does your husband hurt you? Was he the reason why you had all those scars?”

Mrs Gray was silent

“Tell me, please”

Claire held her hands and looked into her eyes

“Does he hurt you?”

“Oh Claire” Mrs Gray said as she sat back down

“He’s been hurting me for a long time —”

I felt his eyes move from my face,to my neck, to my cleavage. The robe did what it could—I could feel the heat rising inside of me. He wanted me, I could see it in his eyes. But I had to resist him, I mean we had barely even spent a day.If I was going to make it through in one piece, I needed to get him off my mind. That was the problem precisely. He was Luca Pavilochenki—“Ciao Bella signora!”I looked around for the owner of the squeaky voice, but I couldn't find himThen I looked down. He was standing between us, looking at me like I was the most fascinating thing in the world He was missing a few teeth, probably six or seven years old. And then I remembered the chorus that morning. Could he be one of them?“Well hello”I said, wondering if he had been there the whole time. If he had watched me and Luca grow awkward. But wait, he didn't understand English.I heaved a sigh of relief as I patted him on the headHe smiled at me, his missing teeth making him all the more cuteThen h

Welcome to Italy! The air hostess’ words filtered through space Sharon's mind was far away. Her and Luca hadn't seen each other for hours. No texts, not calls, nothing. He seemed to respect her privacy a little too much She was scared, scared of opening up a wound that didn't properly heal in the first place. She was scared of letting him know about her tragic past, scared letting him see what she had been hiding Nobody knew, not even Claire So she pushed him away—And gosh, she didn't even mean to But like he said, they were strangers. They landed in a private jet terminal in Florence, and walked into the VIP Like strangers, who met by chance on the plane—Immediately they filed the necessary paperwork, they were both met by two tour guides. Their luggage was taken to their respective places of residence It was evening, they were both tired, and things weren't quite settled between them The night was cold, and even the warmth of Italy couldn't shield herSharon looked at h

Sharon's fork fell to the floorHer eyes went blank, and her face was frozen in expression “Sharon I—”“Leave”“What?”“I'm not comfortable— around you”At that moment, Luca realised he had stepped on uncharted territory. Sharon never spoke to him about her nightmares, never gave him an explanation for her post traumatic responsesHe always suspected something, but he never gave in to his curiosity. Never asked, never pried, never raised questions And now, he just ruined a genuine moment, hopefully the first of many to come—By stating that she had a traumatic childhood Luca slowly stood up, with his head bowed “Sharon”“Don't fucking call me that. You're a stranger to me, remember?”Sharon had never spoken to him like that before. Infact she hardly defied him. He usually had his way, somehow. But he was beginning to realise that he hadn't touched the tip of the iceberg And winning her trust, her heart—Was still an abstract thought. One moment he felt like he was making progres

“Hey”“Riann”“Huh?”“Do you usually fall asleep on strangers?”Sharon became aware of her surroundings, and yes, she was sleeping on him Still, she had no idea how she got into that position, since she had been sitting opposite him “I'm sorry”She said, standing up quickly. Like he was the plague“I don't mind, really”She went back to her initial sitting position “No thanks”“Are you hungry Bella?”“No”Sharon folded her arms around her waist, but she couldn't stifle the sound of her stomach growling Luca gave her a comical smile “Will you eat with me?”Sharon sighed. She knew where it was going. He would offer to feed her during the course of their meal, and hold her in a romantic position. And slowly, she would desire his touch, his affection And eventually, they would do it again, and again, and Sharon would slowly fall in love—“No, I don't dine with strangers”Luca pressed a small bell and two waiters walked in with trays of food“It's okay, I'll leave the room for you t

“We will now take off, I urge you to sit tight and make yourselves comfortable”The cheesy voice of the air hostess echoed through Sharon smiled slightly She sat on a plush white cushion, a table was set in front of her with various appetizersLuca was in another room, keeping his word to make things appear like they met on the tripIt was delusional, but cuteTheir first encounter was terrible, their second, even worseAnd now they were just supposed to forget everything, the doubt, the uncertainty, all of itIt was like—A fresh start A sort of do over. They never got to discover anything about each other before they were married, never courted, never had genuine moments Their marriage was like a death sentence, a cross they had to carry, a burden they were straddled with Maybe if they had met under normal circumstances, maybe if they weren't forced into a union, things would've been different For Sharon, it was going to be a journey of self discovery. She was twenty three yea

“You look beautiful”Sharon turned to see Luca standing behind her. He was wearing a plain black shirt, with black pants and loafers. His lips were curled slightly into a smile His eyelashes fanned his deep blue eyes, and his hair was messed up perfectly, adding to his sheer beauty His presence sent shivers through her, and when their eyes met, for a moment, just a moment, they shared something beautiful. It was a fragile feeling, still in it's foetal state. And Sharon wasn't willing to accept it for what it was Not yet—“Thank you”Her eyes slowly darted back to the mirror, and she continued to adjust the band on her hairHe walked closer, so that could hear his breathing behind her, and feel the vibrations in his chest as he spoke “Leave it”“What?”He looked at her from the mirror.“I like your hair free”His hands moved to her head, and slowly, he loosened the bun she was trying so hard to achieve. He used his fingers to straighten them out, and paused for a moment to admire
