Chapter 1

When I walked into the office of Lucas Dravenhart, my Alpha mate, he was passionately kissing my stepsister, Isabella Hawthorn.

They hadn't seen each other in seven years, and they were completely lost in the moment.

Lucas had his back to the door, and Isabella was sitting on his lap. As expected, there were suppressant pills for the mate bond laid out on the desk.

"I waited seven years for you. You're finally back with me," he said in a soft tone I had never heard.

Isabella half-opened her eyes and looked at me with utter contempt.

I met her gaze and left in a hurry before Lucas noticed I was there.

She had to be feeling pretty triumphant, thinking she had taken everything from me—both my father and my mate.

My head buzzed, and Lucas' assistant was still yammering in my ear. "I told you his girlfriend's inside. What kind of rude person barges in at a time like this?"

Lucas and I had been together for seven years. I traveled all the way from the Moonhowl pack to this faraway city to surprise him, only to be told his "girlfriend" had been staying in the temporary office with him for the past two months.

I clenched the report in my hand. My wolf let out a painful whimper from the betrayal.

"My love, today's my birthday. But I have a gift for you—I'm pregnant with our second pup."

That was the line I'd rehearsed in my head over and over before coming here.

Now, it seemed completely useless.

Since we became mates, Lucas had only slept with me when necessary, but he never kissed me. It was like a curse.

I knew it was his way of staying loyal to Isabella.

But we were fated mates. What kind of wolf refused their fated mate?

I held onto that belief for seven years, only for Isabella to suddenly return.

I should've seen this coming when my father told me months ago that Isabella had broken her mate bond.

After all, Lucas had loved her for so many years.

I tossed the report into the trash bin by the door and asked the nanny, Sophia Fletcher, for the address of the new villa before collapsing on the guest room's bed in tears.

I didn't know when I had fallen asleep, but my son, Finn Dravenhart, was already home when I woke up.

I washed my face, trying to make it look as if nothing happened.

I walked into Finn's room with a smile. He was sitting at his desk, focused on something.

After pulling myself together, I approached him, trying to give him a big hug. "You were on a trip with Daddy for two months. Did you miss me? Come here, my cute little pup!"

Finn frowned and pushed me away impatiently, shielding what he was working on like a treasure. "Don't touch me, Mom. I'm doing something really important!"

I looked down. He was carefully threading a pink crystal onto a delicate chain.

I hadn't received a single birthday wish so far.

Just as I was starting to feel moved, he uttered, "Isabella loves pink, right? It's not as fancy as the custom gift Daddy got her, but I made this with my own hands!"

I felt my heart sink. I didn't even know what to say.

"Move, Mom. You're blocking the light."

I tilted my head back to keep the tears from falling.

"Finn, if Daddy and I broke our mate bond, who would you want to stay with?"

"Huh?" He frowned, not hearing a word I'd just said. "Mom, can you leave? You made me mess up a bead!"

I took a few deep breaths and turned around before walking out. I brushed past Sophia, who came in carrying a glass of milk.

As I walked upstairs, I overheard their conversation.

"Finn, Luna Claire flew a long way to see you. Could you try giving your mom a hug?"

"With her here, I might not get to go to the amusement park with Isabella tomorrow. It's her fault! Why is Mom always haunting me? And she calls me every day! It's annoying!" he exclaimed coldly.

"I wish Isabella were my mom instead! She's so gentle and kind. And she always plays with me and buys me yummy food. She's so different from my annoying mom. If Mom disappeared, could Isabella be my mom instead?"

As I listened to Finn, I felt so sick I nearly gagged.

So, everything I'd done for him wasn't worth as much as the "kind" Isabella.

Since that was the case, then, I didn't want either of them anymore.

Ethan's sudden appearance threw me into turmoil. It seemed the Moon Goddess had given me another challenge.Even though I really liked Theo and didn't dislike Ethan, I wasn't remotely ready to enter a new relationship.I still held on to old habits, such as waking up in the middle of the night to check if Finn had called me, only to remember that I had left my family behind. I didn't need to worry about that anymore. In moments like these, I'd recall the seven years of misguided devotion and foolish decisions.I wasn't sure I even had the ability to love someone again.Thankfully, Ethan fully respected my feelings, even though he was now the most noble wolf in the entire Pack Alliance. After that lighthearted remark he made that day, he never brought anything up again. He just started visiting Theo at school often. There was also someone else who always showed up at the school gate—Lucas.Evidently, he didn't care about the two-month evaluation period. Or maybe, at this point,

"What the fuck are you doing here?" Lucas snarled, looking even more confused than I was."Lucas, we can still go back to how things were, right? I'm already pregnant with your pup. I'll definitely give birth to an outstanding heir," Isabella said.Isabella looked completely unhinged. The clothes she wore were tattered, and the hair she used to obsess over hadn't been brushed in a long time. It was just a wild, matted mess.It was the first time I'd seen her in such a pitiful state. From the day she stepped into our home, my father gave her the best of everything—a spot at the nobles' academy, expensive beauty treatments, designer clothes, and bags.Every time the two of us went out, people instinctively assumed I was the lowly Omega."I've said it before. I have nothing to do with you or your pup," Lucas said coldly.Just moments ago, Lucas had been begging me. Now, he seemed to have regained his Alpha composure. With a cold, emotionless face, he signaled to the people behind

I never expected that Lucas's way of making me regret would be disrupting my professor appointment ceremony. This wasn't something a decent Alpha should do.A few days ago, I was promoted to professor of Combat Theory due to my outstanding performance. At the ceremony, Lucas suddenly showed up with Finn in his arms."Claire's name hasn't been removed from the Moonhowl pack registry. I'm sorry, but she can't hold a position in the Stormcrest pack," he said confidently, holding some documents. Before I left, I specifically asked the school's administration about this—there was no rule barring members from other packs from working here."Lucas, you're absolutely ridiculous right now," I said coldly. The man standing in front of me looked worn out, as though he was holding himself together with nothing but fury.He held no composure that an Alpha should have.It was evident he decided to use this pathetic excuse to force me to go back."I'm your Alpha mate. I have the right to de

A month passed, and Lucas and Finn still hadn't gotten used to life without me.Lucas had grown used to the coffee I made. Without that familiar taste, he felt constantly irritated.Finn wasn't doing much better—his schoolwork and training were a complete mess, and he couldn't get anything right."I got third place, Dad." Finn sighed as he looked at the rankings from the combat competition."If Mom were here, I definitely would've gotten first."Lucas didn't have the patience to comfort him. The pack members had never stopped searching, but they still couldn't find any trace of me.After all, the Stormcrest pack was the most powerful pack in the Alliance. They had the means to protect the privacy of every teacher at their school. So, the two of them had no choice but to head to the award ceremony for the combat competition, held at the Stormcrest pack's largest arena. The ceremony ended in silence, and when Finn stood up, he suddenly caught a familiar scent. After turning his

In the surveillance footage sent by the Beta, Lucas saw me walk into the office, then come out with reddened eyes and throw a document into the trash."What was that?"His sudden question startled the Bets, especially since Lucas's wolf was so agitated. It could burst out and tear everyone apart at any moment. The Beta tried hard to recall. "Ah! The document had the pack hospital's logo on it."Lucas' eyes widened. It was a pregnancy report. That was the "surprise"."Damn it! Damn it!"He nearly crushed the desk, his pupils flashing bright red.The footage kept playing. He saw Isabella walk out of the office. She noticed the document in the trash and picked it up, taking it with her after glancing at it.Lucas felt the blood in his entire body begin to boil."That bitch knew Claire was pregnant all along! She did it on purpose!"It was all her fault! If not for her, I would never have left! With that thought, he rushed back to the villa, seeing Isabella walking out holding

Lucas felt a little unsettled on the way back from the hospital. He kept replaying the look in my eyes and the expression on my face.He picked up his phone and told the hospital staff to take good care of me, finally easing his mind a bit. However, his wolf was still restless and uneasy. When he got home, Isabella was with Finn, eating junk food while playing video games. He frowned slightly. At this rate, Finn would never grow up to be a proper heir of the Alpha."Dad, is Mom okay?" For once, Finn sounded worried. "Mom's wolf is really strong, right? She'll be better soon, right? I need her to help me finish my school project.""She's fine," Lucas answered coldly, though his eyes were fixed on Isabella."She promised not to accuse you, but you really shouldn't have done that to her. We lost our pup," he said."You're still mad at me? I didn't know she was with pup! I thought her wolf would protect her. I was just getting back at her for you—she was on a date with another man
