Rain’s Fire

It was like waking up from a bad dream and losing reality for a few minutes. Then the fuzziness disappeared and the tragic news of my parents death settled back in my mind like a ton of bricks. My heart was forever shattered in this moment. Sadness was so overwhelming inside me I almost lost my breath. I was officially the last of my kind the dragon shifters that I knew of. We were a proud group of shifters who had walked the earth for centuries. Now I am all that stands between extinction or deliverance. Very few shifter clans ever join forces with any other but the dragons had always had the loyalty of the werewolves. Even now that war was surely on the horizon with the death of my parents at the hands of the werecats I knew what I had to do to maintain the wolves loyalty to me. I had to try and find my fated mate amongst the wolves. It was the only way because I didn’t know of any other dragons. I knew from generations past that dragons and wolves could crossbreed. It wasn't done any more only because the dragons were all gone as far as I knew except me. This was a huge task to take on and now I would become the mate to a possessive wolf man. The thought of having a mate was always something I had dreamed of since I was a young girl. Even now I couldn't stop the thread of excitement at the mere thought of a mate. Someone to love me unconditionally. Even though I was twenty years old I was much older than most shifters when they find their fated mates. My parents kept me hidden away from the world because of my ancient elemental magic. I was a very powerful dragon shifter. Now I understood why they were cautious. They knew their ends were near. The Alpha Talis had found the secret to ending the dragon race. My parents were not as powerful as me but still mighty dragons. Talis found a powerful witch to help him render my parents weak. Tears slipped down my face as I looked around my sapphire room for the last time. My parent’s house was now mine and I would keep it hidden with my powers until I needed it again. My gaze landed on the gilded mirror. The woman I saw looking back was heartbroken. My world had fallen apart. My parents were my life and I loved them dearly. I stood on shaking legs and walked closer to the mirror my eye's shining electric blue that of my dragon. I leaned forward and said in the strongest voice I could " I am Rain Zepher. I will find my fated mate and I will avenge my parents if it's the last thing I ever do. They don't know about me but I swear by the Gods they will." I was dressed in a black tee shirt and black jeans. I put on my black jacket. My shoes also black. I grabbed my backpack with my clothes,laptop,and chargers. My phone in my jacket pocket along with all the money I cleared out of the house. It was time and I had a date with destiny. The Black Night Pack was the biggest in North America and the Alpha was the strongest of them all. His reputation had long caught the eye and ears of my parents. Alpha Selwyn Night was feared but respected. Being a dragon I was strong by far but I couldn't let the wolves know what I was until I find my mate. Without looking back I left the mansion empty and began my journey to find Alpha Selwyn and my destiny. I walked through the small town of Jadeville which was quiet at this time of night. The pack lands began just thirty miles on the other side of the town. Shifters kept to themselves away from the humans who didn’t trust us so spotting one in town was highly unlikely. I walked on down the street and heard a growl coming from the alley. I sent my magic surging out to find what was in the alley. A female wolf in distress. This is not what I needed at the moment but I couldn’t just walk away and not help her. As I walked closer to the alley I smelled cat shifters. They were taunting the young wolf. Hatred flooded my mind and my body tensed for the fight I knew was coming. Quietly I sat my backpack down and walked into the alley unnoticed by the two large cat shifter men and the young female wolf. Her eyes were glowing green and her hackles were raised she had already shifted into her wolf. She was a beautiful wolf with midnight black fur and white feet. They had her backed into a corner as I walked closer. “Our Alpha will love this little puppy for a present.” The dark haired Cat man said to his light haired buddy as they laughed. “ We will just have to teach this mutt some manners first.” The light haired Cat spat out at the young wolf. I was almost directly behind the cat men when the young wolf went still and silent raising her ears and looking at me as if I was crazy. Well at this point maybe I was but I knew the cat men couldn’t defeat me. They didn’t know whom they were dealing with. Both men turned at the same time and I smiled with hatred blazing from my eyes. I couldn’t let my dragon out but I wasn’t above using magic to end these two scum bags. “What have we here?” I asked in my sweetest voice. The men sensing my magic took a step back. “ Nothing that concerns you little girl?” The light haired cat man hissed at me. “Well seeing as how you are trying to hurt and scare my friend there I think it’s definitely my business.” I said smiling. The young wolf never made a sound as she watched us deciding if she could trust me or not. I grabbed both men and let the electricity from the air run thru my body and shoot into the cats. They both fell in a heap on the ground. Their lifeless eyes unblinking. Now I just had to make sure the young wolf was ok. I knew when I used my powers my face changes and electricity covers my hands. I looked to her and she shifted back into a young teen with black hair and blue eyes. “Are you ok?” I asked her as I used my magic to clothe her real quick. She looked shaken and nervous but walked up to me throwing her arms around me. I was shocked to my shoes. I figured she would fear me because most do when they see what magic I posses. “Thank you thank you thank you” she whispered as she held onto me tightly. I hugged her back and whispered comforting words to calm her down. “What’s your name little wolf?” I asked her when she finally released me. “ I’m ShyElle but you can call me Shy.” she whispered as if not wanting anyone to hear her. “ I’m Rain.” I told her as I turned walking back out of the alley and gathered my backpack putting it back on my back. I knew Shy would follow me and I was hoping she wasn’t a runaway. “ So tell me Shy how did those cats come to corner you?” I asked her as she walked beside me heading out of town. She looked around then down at her feet before she said quietly “I was taking a run to let my wolf out by the border of pack lands when they grabbed me from behind and carried me to the town. I fought them and ended up in that alley. They were going to take me away and probably kill me or worse. You know the hatred all wolves have for the cats. It would have started the war the cats have wanted by taking me. You see I am the sister of the Black Night Alpha. Selwyn Night is my brother.” My eyes were round with shock. I just saved the sister to the Alpha and now I was returning her home. I would definitely be meeting the Alpha sooner than I thought. Doubt and worry clouded my mind as we walked into the forest just past the town. I knew the Alpha would be coming for Shy. Half way thru the forest I sensed wolves in the near distance headed right at us at break neck spread. “ The Alpha is coming. Be ready they will be here in minutes.” I told Shy as she smiled for the first time. She looked exhausted and bedraggled but her smile lit up her whole face. I motioned for her to stop just as five wolves cleared the trees into the clearing we had just stepped into. They were lead by the biggest wolf I had ever seen. His fur was midnight black with no traces of white like Shy’s wolf had. His green eyes blazing fire as he stopped just in front of Shy. A look of relief flashed in those eyes for a split second before the hard gleam of an alpha was back. Shy smiled and tears slipped down her face as she wrapped her arms around the huge black wolf. I knew within myself that this was Alpha Selwyn. His wolf was powerful and magnificently gorgeous. My inner dragon took notice and I just knew that my eyes were shining electric blue as we looked at him. He instantly shifted and hugged his sister close to him. I used my magic to clothe him without even thinking about it. He turned sharply to gaze at me. Confused only because he couldn’t figure out what I was. His eyes widened and he uttered the words I so badly wanted to hear. “Mate”
