Adela didn’t show up at the office all day.

Richard and Diana came by the apartment. Layson had already left for work, so she had to face them alone—and the atmosphere was colder than ice.

“You’re the one who encouraged Ralph to run away, weren’t you?” Richard accused, voice full of mockery. “This is how you act as a mother? I knew you had some hidden agenda when you got close to Layson.”

His sarcastic tone made Adela’s chest tighten with anger. But with Ralph still playing quietly in the study, she forced herself to breathe deeply and hold it in.

“Mr. Norman,” she said evenly, “no matter what I say, you’ve already made up your mind about me. So I won’t waste my breath. If there’s nothing else, feel free to make yourselves tea. I’ve got work to do.”

She stood to leave, but Diana quickly stepped in to play peacemaker.

“You know how he is,” she said with an awkward smile. “Always blunt. Don’t take it to heart. We just came to bring Ralph home. He’s got kindergarten tomorrow.”

Adela had been watching the countdown as she approached the intersection. Her speed was slow, and the red light was just ticking down to one. She didn’t brake—just kept coasting, and the green light lit up right as she passed the line. Before she even had time to react, something slammed into her car, shoving it into the guardrail. For a split second, she genuinely thought she was going to die.She hadn’t even unbuckled her seatbelt yet, but the airbag had already deployed.Once her brain caught up, she realized—she’d just been in an accident. Her hands and feet were ice cold. She checked herself quickly and, surprisingly, found no visible injuries. Just a wave of nausea hitting her.Maybe it was just shock. She tried to calm herself, touched her belly—it cramped a little, but maybe that was just from hunger. The windshield was still intact, so she could see the front of the truck was completely crumpled. And Layson’s car… Her heart sank. That luxury ride was definitely done for.The

Adela stared at Cici's face, trying to read her expression, searching for any subtle reaction that might give away what she was really thinking. But after watching for a while, she realized—this girl truly had no filter.Cici was visibly excited. “You know her too? That actress who blew up recently in that period drama as the second female lead—she’s so good! I even copied her costume for today. Gosh, it’s such a pity, I didn’t even dare ask her for a signed photo.”Seeing how easily Adela was chatting with the actress, Cici was actually thinking of asking if Adela could help her get that autograph.Adela, however, was feeling a bit drained. She called a waiter to settle the bill, only to be told that Zach had already taken care of it. That just made her more speechless. She glanced at the time—past ten. “Are you eating lunch out today? Layson’s dad warned me I have to be home by noon for lunch.”Cici looked absolutely shocked, her voice cracking. “Seriously? In this day and age, he s

While waiting at a red light, Adela received a call from Cici. She was driving Layson's car and was particularly cautious, so she didn't answer immediately. Once the light turned green, she pulled over safely and returned the call.If she had been driving her own car, she might have used a headset or Bluetooth. But with Layson's car, she was extra careful to avoid any mishaps. The call connected quickly, and Cici's gentle voice came through, "Adela, do you have a moment? I need a favor."Adela was curious, "Weren't you planning to spend the weekend gaming with your brother? What happened?"Cici hesitated, "My mom found that men's trench coat today and scolded me for not returning it. I need to return it today, or she'll get suspicious."Adela chuckled, "I told you to mail it back. Now look. Are you meeting him?"Cici replied, "I wouldn't dare. Besides..."She seemed apprehensive about Zach, feeling she might be losing her admiration for him."Are you home? I'll bring the coat out. He

Bard’s complexion had darkened—probably from too much time abroad. Marah scoffed inwardly. Who was he to judge her, when he’d been off gallivanting overseas? She tilted her head, propping her chin on one hand. "What if he is? What if he isn’t?"A shadow flickered in Bard’s eyes before his usual rakish grin returned. "Doesn’t matter. You’re already mine. Does your boyfriend know?"The malice in his tone made her teeth grind.Marah twirled a strand of hair, voice breezy. "He’s just an admirer. Since I belong to you, I’ll naturally turn him down."The answer mollified Bard. He grabbed her hand, beaming. "Let’s shop. Whatever you want—my treat."Marah’s stomach churned, but she forced a smile. I still need him to deal with Adela. "Alright. But I have to be back at the office this afternoon."Only when Bard agreed did she let him lead her out. That evening, Richard asked about the date. Marah chose her words carefully. "We didn’t have much in common."Richard said nothing.Days later, he i

Richard’s frown softened slightly as he looked at Marah. His tone was uncharacteristically gentle. "He’s around your age. Just treat it as making a new friend."Marah’s face stiffened. She stared at him, unblinking. "Uncle Norman, I’m not… interested in dating right now."Richard set down his chopsticks. The air around him grew heavy, though his expression remained neutral. "You’re young. Expanding your social circle will only benefit you. I’m not forcing you to accept him—just go with an open mind."His patience was thin. Marah knew pushing back further would only provoke him. Lowering her gaze, she forced a nod. "...Alright. I’ll go tomorrow."Richard’s mood visibly improved. Adela, eager to avoid collateral damage, ducked her head and focused on her food. The moment she did, Layson deposited a piece of fish into her bowl. She ate it without looking, still unnerved by Richard’s earlier intensity. I used to argue with this man over trivial things? The memory of their past clashes sen

Richard’s frown deepened at Diana’s question. "If Dexter liked Marah, I wouldn’t stand in their way. But that brat clearly—"He cut himself off, his expression darkening as he recalled the scandalous headlines during his hospitalization—Adela and Dexter visiting him together, sparking rumors.Back then, he’d suspected Dexter had feelings for Adela. Furious, he’d been ready to beat some sense into the boy if necessary. Thankfully, Dexter had seemingly moved on, focusing on his studies. Now, with all three "children" under his watch, Richard had noticed Dexter’s gaze no longer lingered on Adela the way it once had. That, at least, eased his mind. But tonight, when Marah pressed Dexter about his "type," Richard’s first thought was: Does she have feelings for him?Observing Dexter’s reaction—icy, borderline hostile—confirmed one thing: He would never be a suitable match for Marah. For her own good, Richard would intervene. Again.Diana, sensing his simmering anger, chose not to push furth
