"Do you think there’s any chance he knows it was me?"

I asked.

John glanced at me, just as unsure. "He didn’t touch you, did he?"

I hesitated.

"Let’s just get out of here," I said quickly, brushing past his question. "I’m alive, that’s what matters. You should be smiling, not scowling."

He didn’t smile.

I rolled my eyes as we continued down the quiet path so the guards won't see us, putting distance between us and the palace. We’d parked far away to avoid suspicion.

Once inside the car, we didn’t say a word. We just drove.

A few minutes later, we were in John’s office. The computer hummed to life as we waited for it to boot up. He sat across from me, eyes flicking up.

His expression turned very serious.

"When I ask if you’re okay," he bellowed. "I expect the truth."

I followed his gaze, his eyes locked on the faint red marks on my neck.

I shifted in my seat. "Relax, it was just Tonya."

He didn’t believe me. But before he could push, I looked at the screen.
