Working in the castle

Chapter 6

Iris POV

"The Alpha sent us to come get you," One of the guards utters coldly, and I can't help the scoff that tears through my throat. The only person I'm scared of in this pack is the Alpha, and nobody else, so if this guard thinks he can intimidate me with that look, then he better go back and learns more about how to scare me.

"So what? Is that why you barged in just like that? I'm sure you know how to knock, or nicely announce your presence other than barging in like that, right?" I snap at them angrily as I clench my fists, trying so hard to suppress the anger that keeps trying to consume me. I don't care about what happens next, I may slap these bastards now.

"Iris, please," Mom whispers behind me, and I sigh briefly. Turning to face her, I pull her into my arms and hug her tightly like it's the last time we are ever going to see each other. Tears stream down my cheeks as I hug her like I should never let her go. Although we are still going to see each other often since she's a head maid, but I'm still not happy.

"Don't cry, ok? I will check on you often. I will always bring food for you, I promise," She whispers as she hugs me tightly, and I nod my head.

Finally, I leave the house with the guards as we head to the Alpha's chamber.

"Alpha," The rude guard announces our presence once we arrive at the front of his chamber, and he ushers us in. I was thinking that I would go in with the guards, but the other one urge me to go in alone, and it suddenly feels like I'm going to faint any time soon. I can't stand that man, please.

Taking a deep breath, I push the door open and walk inside my body trembling in fear. There's something about his dark aura that's always so scary.

"Greetings, Alpha," I manage to greet him while lowering my gaze to the ground.

"Sit!" He replies to me instead, and I quickly walk over to sit in front of him.

"You have to pledge your loyalty to me and promise not to harm my children. If anything also happens to them, tell me what I should do to make you pay for it," His voice comes out with so much power, and I gulp down nothing nervously as I feel my heart beating rapidly against my chest.

"Don't keep me waiting," He sounds calm this time, yet scary.

"I...I...I promise to always be loyal to the Alpha, I will treat your children nicely and always obey them... I will make sure that I protect them with my life, and if anything goes wrong later, let the Alpha take my life in return," Funny how those words flawlessly left my mouth without faltering. I think I'm crazy to have made that oath, because why the hell should I be killed if anything happens to the kids? They are just kids, so why should I do whatever they want? And for goodness sake, I'm just their maid and not a bodyguard!

"Good. The physician will be here soon to do some checkup on you so I'll know if you're fit to be my kid's maid," He further says, and I slowly nod my head even though I want to throw him insults.

"Hmm," I nod my head as I hum.

Silence assumes the atmosphere, and as I raise my gaze to look at him, my heart skips at the sight of his pair of deadly brown eyes, staring at me, and I quickly turn my gaze away.

Sitting in front of him is weird and at the same time tiring, so I keep looking forward to the said physician to show up and do the damn test so I can get the hell out of here.

"Nikolai, Alpha," A masculine voice sounds from outside, and I assume the person must be the physician.

"Come in," His deep voice echo in the room, and the door opens before the sound of footsteps fills the room.

"Greetings, Alpha," The masculine voice greets him from behind me, and I tilt my head back to see a man in his mid-sixties, though he looks a bit younger than his age. He has his raven with a mixture of grey hair curled on his head. He has a pair of green eyes and somewhat hairy skin.

"Check her health status and let me know if she's fit," He says to the man, and he nods his head before he turns to face me.

"May I have your hand, miss?" He requests as he stretches his palm forth, and I gulp down nothing before I give him my hand. I watch as he places his fingers on my wrist and closes his eyes.

After a few seconds, he lets go of my hand before he turns to face the Alpha. Wait a minute! What did he just do? Don't tell me he can tell my health status by just holding my hand. That is crazy, honestly.

"Have you forgotten he's a doctor?" My subconscious mind reminds me, and I scoff silently. He's just a physician for goodness sake, and not a doctor.

"According to her pulse, her heartbeat is accurate, and her blood flow doesn't have a problem. However, she still needs to take some herb to clear any diseases that might be in her body," He says to the Alpha, and I just feel like screaming at him. I am not sick for goodness sake, why would he even do this?

"In that case, she needs to be isolated for some days before she can start working here then," He replies to the man, and I can't control it anymore, so I scoff, causing him to cast me a deadly glare.

"Uhm... Alpha... There's nothing wrong with me. Do I need to be isolated?" I know this is wrong, but I still can't help asking him. How I wish it was not someone this scary. I wouldn't have hesitated to walk out on him, or even give him a piece of my mind, but that won't work now.

"Take her away," He ignores me and says to the man.

"Come with me, miss," The man turns to me and utters before he turns and starts walking toward the door. I need no one to tell me to follow him, so I stand up to my feet and trail behind him to wherever he's taking me. I guess my life can't get any better now that I'm here...
