I clenched my jaw and fired a series of rapid jabs at the sturdy oak tree in front of me. My bruised knuckles didn't sense the pain. The tree's bark fractured beneath my furious strikes, yet I didn’t relent. Jab, uppercut, swipe with my claws, my strikes were quick, smooth, and deadly.
My breaths came in quick gasps, my body shining with sweat as I swung again. I needed this. The empty repetition, the pain in my muscles—it kept me from thinking. From remembering.
"Seliora," a voice spoke behind me.
I drew a sharp breath, fingers curling into fists before I turned. Desa, the matron of the pack house, had stopped two feet away, her hands softly clasped in front of her. She was expressionless, but those piercing eyes betrayed a trace of disapproval.
I wiped the sweat off my forehead with my palm. "What is it?"
"It's time to prepare."
I frowned. "Prepare for what?"
Desa's face was pointed. "The Mating Ball."
The words sliced through like a chilly slap and understanding settled into my bones. For an instant, my shoulders dropped before I let out a breath, regarding the tree again. "I almost forgot."
"It is your duty now," Desa reminded me gently.
I clenched my teeth. Right. My duty. As the second daughter of Alpha Coren, I was not saddled by such responsibilities. But after the rogue attack took my elder sister, Malyra, everything changed. The training, the weight, the pack's future, it all now lay on my shoulders.
I had fought against it at first, but the pack needed a strong leader. And now I had to step into the role, as the next in line. Thalric was still too young.
Desa indicated the pack house. "Come on. You need to be cleaned up. The stylists are waiting."
I sighed, realizing that arguing was pointless. I cast one last glance at the damaged tree and followed Desa inside.
The packed house was abuzz with arrangements already. Rank and unranked wolves were running around in a whirl, ensuring that everything was ready for the occasion. The Mating Ball was an annual affair, where unmated Alphas, Betas, and ranked wolves gathered to find their fated mates. As an Alpha myself and the daughter of one, I was obligated to be there.
Desa guided me into an opulent bathroom where a warm bath was ready. The air carried a fragrance of lavender, calming me. I didn’t really care for such luxuries, but being who I was, there was no other option.
"I'll let you be alone now," Desa told me. "Have yourself ready shortly."
I nodded rigidly, waiting for her to leave before removing my clothes. As I entered the warm water, my muscles relaxed, yet my mind remained strained.
I was capable enough by myself. I didn't need a mate. I didn't need anyone. Years back it was all I dreamed of, but now…
However, duty required that I go so I did exactly that.

I stopped myself at the entrance of the splendid ballroom, adjusting the wrinkles in my gown. The deep crimson material clung to my figure, accentuating my slender shape.
The gown was brazen, lethal, the opposite of what I was. But Desa had insisted I wear it. I had to make a statement and whatnot, after all. I took a deep breath, forcing myself to relax. It was just one evening. I’d be able to survive this.
Drawing in a final breath, I stepped into the ballroom.
As soon as I walked into the room, every eye turned to look at me.
Even with my anxiety, I kept my head up, shoulders back, striding confidently across the expanse of the white marble floor. I imagined what they saw when they looked at me, a young yet formidable to-be-Alpha, a quiet but capable fighter. Whispers of my intelligence, of my ferocity defending my pack.
I disregarded the looks and headed towards the refreshments. A server presented me with a glass of wine, which I accepted, drinking it gradually. The rich flavour barely registered on my tongue.
Soon enough, the rest of the Alphas began to make their way towards me.
"Alpha Seliora," a deep voice spoke to me. I turned to see Alpha Jareth, a seasoned warrior from the north. He was powerful and noble, but not one I was drawn to.
"Alpha Jareth," I answered with a nod of respect.
"Congratulations on doing such a great job in preparation for filling your father's place," he told me, mixing the wine in his cup. "I hear your pack is stronger than ever under your hand."
"I do what I have to do."
Jareth chuckled. "Modest, are you?"
I lifted an eyebrow but remained silent. I didn't entirely embrace humility, nor did I flaunt my successes like a trophy.
More Alphas appeared, each attempting to gauge my interest. Some were forward, some wary, but I remained sealed back. I answered with curt monosyllables, offering no more than politeness required without offering enough to invite a reply.
It was exhausting.
I was just about to conjure up an excuse to depart when unexpectedly, the hairs on my arm bristled.
An unfamiliar, overwhelming feeling engulfed me, and I struggled to breathe.
My fingers wrapped around my glass tightened as a new, strange heat enveloped her chest. It was primal, instinctual, an unmistakable pull deep in my bones.
Was that… a mate bond?
I went stiff, every muscle locked in place. I slowly turned toward the door, as if something was compelling me.
And there he was.
Alpha Kaelion.
His presence was a storm in itself. He was tall, broad-shouldered, and clad entirely in black, occupying the space without uttering a single word. His dark eyes wandered before locking onto mine, and as soon as they met, a sensation within me constricted.
I barely registered the thud of my own heart, racing wildly in my chest.
Kaelion's eyes darkened, his lip twisting slightly as if he already knew.
I breathed sharply.
I was certain no one would ever step forward and claim me.
Now, however, I could not be so sure.
SELIORA POVI refused to go with my father earlier. He tried to drag me with him but I broke free from his grip.“We should return to the bus, it is dangerous out here,” Kaelion mumbled. It was obvious he was frustrated.“I met with my father earlier in the house,” I said, as we both made our way out of the woods. “I tried to get him to talk.”“You let him go,” Kaelion stated.“I needed to warn you,” I responded, almost immediately. After I refused to go with my father, he fled through the back door just as I turned to go talk to Kaelion.Kaelion remained silent the entire walk back to the bus. After walking out of the woods, we walked towards where the bus was.Kaelion then walked over to his men while I got into the bus and sat down.I recalled my conversation earlier with my father. It was obvious he was tense and restless. The one who got him to do all of this had to be someone so powerful. Someone who had something to use against him. “Are you hurt?” Kaelion asked, getting into
KAELION POVI really thought I was finally going to be able to put all of this behind me.After Jackson informed me about finding out where Alpha Thane was, it got me furious and I began to feel my quest for revenge rising. Not only did he lie to his daughter on the phone, but he also pretended like he was being taken.I looked at my watch impatiently. Seliora had spent five minutes in the house, she only had one more minute before I stormed into the house with my men.I could hear the sound of my heartbeat as the clock ticked.“Thirty seconds to go,” I stated, looking back at my men who were standing in position.I had no idea what I was going to do to Alpha Thane once I stormed in. I knew I wanted answers but what if the answers were too much for me to handle? For the longest time, all I wanted to do was speak to Alpha Thane and ask why he did this to me.Now that it was time, I was anxious. The five minutes I gave to Seliora had finally run out. I took another look at my men and us
SELIORA POVKaelion was missing something. No matter how much I tried to convince him that something was wrong, he refused to listen.“Why would he run now?” I asked. “He could have run since you took me if he wanted to.”“He was sick, he ran after he got better,” Kaelion replied.I was tired of trying to get Kaelion to see my point.“I need to talk to him first after getting to the house,” I demanded, seeing how furious he had been since the bus drove out of the pack house. He had the same death look on his face on the day he murdered my pack.“Fine but do not test my patience, Seliora. Convince him to name his accomplice and this would all be over soon,” He stated.I nodded my head in agreement.I wanted to talk to my father and ask him questions too, but I just did not know where to start. So much had happened since the last time I saw him in person.I felt like a different person now.I stared out the moving bus window anxiously.Could I really trust Kaelion to put himself togethe
SELIORA POVI slowly opened my eyes.I had no idea what had happened last night after Kol asked me to leave the party with him.I remember refusing him yet he held my hands and dragged me away with him.“I should not have drunk,” I muttered, sitting up.I could feel a sharp pounding sensation in my head.I realised I had been in the room I had stayed in for a few days as a punishment for disobeying Kaelion.Did I do something wrong again? I closed my eyes and tried to recall what had happened but could not. “Fuck,” I exclaimed.I was supposed to talk to Kaelion about how he ran his pack affairs not get drunk and forget all that had happened.I walked out of bed and hurried towards the door. The kysnite stone and my father’s diary were still in my room.I could not let anyone see either of the two. I hurried out of the room and went straight into the pack house. As I walked in, Kaelion appeared from nowhere.“You have ten minutes to get ready, we have somewhere to be,” He stated in a
KAELION POVI could feel my anger rising.“Get away from her!” I demanded, charging towards him.He dodged my attack swiftly and hurried towards the door. I contemplated going after him but instead hurried towards Seliora who was still on the bed.“Are you okay?” I asked, helping her sit up.“What happened?” She mumbled. It was obvious she was tipsy.“Why did you come here with him?” I asked, picking her up into my arms.“He was sweet to me,” She answered as I left the room. I said nothing and carried her into the car. I fastened her seat belt and locked the car door.I then hurried back into the bar and paid for the drinks before getting back into the car and driving off.Halfway to the pack house, she turned to look at me.“You are marrying, Claire,” She mumbled. “You both deserve each other.”“No!” I exclaimed, wondering how she knew about it.“I know I should hate you and I want to but I just do not. You hurt me, Kaelion. You took everything from me,” She continued. “Despite all
KAELION’S POVI could not believe my eyes. The dress Seliora wore was almost the same one as the dress Misha wore on our first date.“Please pick something else to wear,” I demanded, standing up.Seliora walked away without saying a word. Five minutes later, she walked back to me.She had changed the outfit just as I asked her to.“Can we leave now?” She asked, with a straight face.I felt bad for asking her to change the dress. I had noticed her body language earlier in the car. She didn't feel comfortable in the clothes she wore. This was not the first time I had seen her that way.“Yes,” I replied, walking over to the reception. “Pack all the clothes she tried on.”The boutique staff nodded their head in agreement. “Give me a few minutes,” She said, while I looked back at Seliora who was standing right across me.I looked back at the staff at the reception and handed my card to her. A few minutes later, I was handed the bags.I then walked over to Seliora.“I only got two pants an
