TEAMMATES LOCKER ROOM PT 1

The locker room still smelled like victory and cheap champagne. Ice melted in puddles under the benches. Someone’s cleats lay abandoned in the middle of the floor. The coaching staff had left twenty minutes earlier, still shouting about the eighty-ninth-minute goal. The rest of the squad drifted out in pairs, voices fading down the concrete corridor until the heavy door finally thudded shut.

Only two remained.

Jace Renner stood in the center of the room, jersey alread

  • SINFUL ENCOUNTERS    CHAPTER 127

TEAMMATES LOCKER ROOM PT 7The locker room had gone quiet ten minutes earlier. Water still ran in the far shower stall where Jace had Ethan pinned against the tile. Ethan’s hands braced on the wall. Jace’s hips snapped forward in short, hard strokes, one forearm across Ethan’s chest to keep him in place. Steam filled the space. The rest of the team and staff had cleared out after the final whistle. The championship trophy remained in its usual corner beyond the showers, out of sight from the stalls. The tile under Ethan’s palms was slick. Water ran in steady sheets down both their backs. Jace’s mouth stayed close to Ethan’s ear. “Stay quiet and take it.”Ethan pushed back to meet the next thrust. The wet sound of their bodies mixed with the spray. Neither of them heard the main door open.Footsteps crossed the concrete floor. A coach’s voice called out, casual and loud.“Anyone still in here? Left my bag by the tactics board.”They separated in one fast motion. Jace stepped back under

TEAMMATES LOCKER ROOM PT 6The final whistle of practice still echoed in the concrete corridor when the last of the squad filtered out. Jace sat on the end of the bench unlacing his cleats with deliberate slowness. Ethan stayed under the shower spray longer than anyone else, waiting for the sound of the main door to close. The championship trophy stood on its pedestal in the corner, polished metal catching the overhead lights. No one had moved it since the night they won it.Steam still drifted from the open shower stalls. The floor held thin films of water and the faint chalk of dried grip spray. Jace finished with his cleats and set them aside. He waited until the last distant voices faded down the hallway. When the room finally went quiet except for the drip of a faulty shower head, Jace stood and walked to the row of lockers. Ethan shut the water off and stepped out, water still running down his chest and stomach. They did not speak at first. The ritual had replaced the need for w

TEAMMATES LOCKER ROOM PT 5The hotel room door shut with a soft click. Jace dropped his bag at the foot of the nearest bed. Ethan locked the deadbolt and turned the extra latch. Outside in the hallway a teammate’s voice carried for a moment as he called the elevator, then faded. The walls were thin enough that the television in the next room came through as a low murmur. The carpet under their feet was thin and institutional. The two beds sat close enough that the space between them felt deliberate. Jace pulled his shirt over his head and tossed it aside. “Quiet contest. Whoever makes a real sound while he’s getting bred loses the round.”Ethan stepped in close. “You’re on. Slow and deep. Make the other one break.”They stripped the rest of the way without hurry. The competition sat in the air between them sharper than any match whistle. Clothes landed in separate piles near the bags. The only light came from the bathroom door left half open. Jace shoved Ethan face-down onto the first

TEAMMATES LOCKER ROOM PT 4The bus rolled through the dark highway with its overhead lights dimmed to a low blue. Most of the team had settled into the long overnight stretch—hoods pulled up, headphones in, seats reclined. A few soft snores mixed with the steady rumble of the engine and the occasional hiss of the air brakes. Jace sat two rows behind the rear exit. Ethan occupied the seat across the aisle. Neither of them had slept. The windows showed only black countryside and the occasional blur of distant headlights. The air smelled of stale coffee and the faint rubber of the tires. Jace kept his eyes forward, jaw set, counting the minutes between each small shift of the coach. Ethan did the same. The earlier practice marks still sat under their clothes. The agreement from the night before had carried them this far without a single spoken word about what came next.Jace stood first. He moved down the narrow aisle without looking at anyone and disappeared into the tiny bathroom at th

TEAMMATES LOCKER ROOM PT 3The hotel hallway carpet muffled their steps. Jace slid the key card into the lock of room 412 and pushed the door open. Ethan followed carrying both bags. The room was standard—two queen beds, a desk under the window, a bathroom with a glass-walled shower. The door clicked shut behind them. The competition that had lived between them since the championship night resumed before either man set his bag down.Jace dropped his duffel and turned. Ethan met him halfway. The first contact was a hard shove that sent Jace back against the entry wall. Ethan’s mouth landed on his a second later, open and aggressive. Jace answered by gripping Ethan’s jacket and spinning them so Ethan’s shoulders hit the opposite wall. Clothes started coming off in the short corridor between the door and the beds—jackets, team polos, the undershirts still carrying the smell of the bus. By the time they reached the bathroom both of them were down to compression shorts.Jace reached into t

TEAMMATES LOCKER ROOM PT 2Practice the next afternoon carried a different kind of heat. The coaching staff ran possession patterns under a hard blue sky. Jace moved through the sequences with his usual sharp precision, but every time he cut past Ethan the contact lingered half a second longer than the drill required. Ethan answered with a shoulder that rocked Jace sideways and drew a sharp look from the assistant coach. They didn’t speak. Stolen glances happened in the water breaks—Jace watching the way Ethan peeled off his training bib, Ethan tracking the low hang of Jace’s shorts when he bent to retie a cleat. A late tackle from Ethan clipped Jace’s ankle hard enough to make him hop. Jace shoved him once the whistle blew. The coach barked at both of them to cut it out. They finished the session in silence. The sun sat high and unforgiving. Sweat cut tracks through the dust on their skin. Every time their bodies collided the residual awareness from the night before flared under the
