Susan's POV
“Can you quit the questions and start coming immediately? It's an hour before the company closes for the day. You'd get the answers you seek once you show up,” Paul disclosed. He terminated the conversation without giving me the chance to speak further. He must have been sick and tired of my constant questions. Rather than staying back to worry my head, I drove straight to the company. I didn't bother calling Paul for more because I knew he would never answer the phone. Upon arriving at the company, the atmosphere I met didn't seem too encouraging for me. The whole place was quiet and void of staff, as though someone died. I got worried and glared at my wristwatch to ensure it wasn't the closing hour. “The company hasn't closed for the day yet. So where the fuck is everyone?" I asked myself rhetorically. “Over here,” a voice responded from a distance, even though I wasn't expecting anyone to hear me. From a distance, I saw Paul waving his hands while signaling me to step forward Still curious to know what was happening, I obeyed and got closer to him. “Where's everybody? This place is so quiet. What exactly is happening?” I asked Paul. Without saying a word, he held my hands and took me to the warehouse. I tried to question his actions, but he wasn't paying attention to me until we successfully arrived at the warehouse. My mysteries were compiled when I met some staff members gathered at the warehouse, mumbling. The mumbling became worrisome to me. It seemed to me like a protest. The last time I witnessed something like that was in the movies, and the end was disastrous. Now it's happening live to the company. My greatest fear is the disastrous. “The Boss is here,” I heard someone speak to alert the other staff. They all maintained composure after realizing my presence. It took them a while to notice that. “What's going on here? And why are you all gathered here?” I spoke with so much authority. Not even my commanding tone could make them freak out and respond to my question. The silent treatment I received from the staff was starting to make me look like a fool in the presence of my staff. I didn't speak further. All I did was direct my gaze at Paul for some explanation. “Can you explain the meaning of this madness? Did you bring me here to humiliate me? Why is everyone not saying anything?” I wailed. Since Paul invited me over, I figured he might be in the need position to satisfy my curiosity “We heard that the CEO got arrested by the popular Ma'am Naomi Jackson,” One of the staff finally confessed on behalf of everyone. My gaze was still flickered on Paul, which made it difficult for me to grasp the speaker. I was taken aback by the voice. I wish I never forced them to speak. Now I'm in for some long talks. “Who told you that? Is that why you all are gathered here?” I blasted the staff. I didn't want to let them know that the question kind of made me panic. “We are worried about the CEO. We are scared that he might be tried in court. Once that happens, it certainly may affect the company,” Pamela Rogers spoke. She's the company's janitor. She also happens to be one of the oldest staff. She joined the company before I thought about snatching Ethan from Maria. If there was an award for the best staff, she'd surely emerge as the winner. “And why did you say so, ma'am?” I asked her nicely. I addressed her with utmost respect due to her age. “Rumour has it that ma'am Naomi Jackson is a very influential self-made billionaire. We also heard that she knows her way around. We are concerned about our jobs, too,” Pamela justified her thought. Pathetic staff! I was upset at the way they praised Naomi Jackson. If only they knew that Maria was the so-called Naomi Jackson. It's one of the reasons I wanted to get Maria off the radar. She barely returned to the city, and she's already messing with my life. First, it was my marriage, and now my company. Her next move might be worse than the previous. “What you heard was the truth. The CEO was arrested last night, but he's home now. You ain't got nothing to worry about. Can you all get back to work now?” I addressed the issue. I thought it would restore the mayhem that Maria had caused. Unfortunately, it didn't. Some staff appeared to still be in doubt. They all thought I was trying to protect Ethan by lying. They might not admit it, but from their grumbling, I could see the real truth. “How about you FaceTime Mr. Woods for the confirmation? If you also need someone to go plead with Ma'am Naomi Jackson, I could volunteer,” Pamela dared me. I was agitated when I heard the voice. However, my anger died a natural death when I realized it was Pamela. I can't imagine myself yelling at someone who could pass as my mother. “Paul, can you please help me here? I am losing it,” I whispered to Paul to solicit his support. I was surprised that he had to invite me over rather than handle the situation himself. “Just do it. I've been trying to convince them that Ethan is out of prison, but they won't believe me.” Paul said. He looked lost. He had given up so soon, just when I thought I could depend on him. It was the simplest task ever. At the same time, the most difficult of them all. In normal circumstances, I would have called Ethan with ease. But after the altercation we had, calling him is surely not the best to do. He might want to think that I called to apologize. Knowing how egocentric Ethan is, he is predicted to snub my first call for his bragging rights.Susan's POVPaul covered my mouth with his palm to prevent the workers from hearing me. He forced me inside the car and shut the door. It goes to show how careful he wants to be. “Have you suddenly lost your mind? Why would you even come up with a dangerous plan like that? What if you get caught?” Paul berated me for my suggestion. I was slightly disappointed in him. I thought he was going to take sides with me. I was wrong. And this time, we both seemed to be on different pages. “Come on, Paul. I did nothing wrong. It was just a harmless suggestion. Besides, you don't even have a better option.” I protested.I justified my actions with a thousand explanations, yet it wasn't enough to convince Paul to work with me. He still thinks I'm losing my mind. I decided not to speak with Paul about the idea anymore to avoid being reported to the police.“How about we go talk to his Father? I believe that could help,” Paul suggested. I didn't waste time kicking against it. Mine sounded
Susan's POVBurying my face in shame and bowing to the overwhelming pressure from the staff, I brought out my phone to FaceTime Ethan upon the staff's request. It was the only way I could restore sanity in the company. I've lost numerous battles in the last 24 hours already. I am not ready to lose the hardworking staff. They're beginning to lose their confidence in me. They represent the company's progress.Without their immense hard work and contribution, Frontline Gold Mine might have suffered a significant setback. I Face timed Ethan. I was scared that he wasn't going to respond. I can't imagine being humiliated by Ethan in the presence of the staff. They will surely mock me for the rest of my life. “Hey, Susan. Thank goodness you called. I've been trying to reach out to you for hours. I was scared that something had happened to you. It's good to know that you're safe now.” Ethan hurriedly spoke as though he was being chased with a machete. I haven't been gone for lon

Susan's POV I returned to where my car was parked and wept like a child who just lost her mother. Ethan made me regret what I did. He had zero regard for me. I wished I never made a move to ensure he was released from prison. I wished I had sat back and listened to Ethan when he assured me that his lawyer was going to handle the situation. Maria made me believe that the freedom of Ethan rested on her shoulders and I believed her. I fell for her tricks without doing my homework. Sadly for me, I failed woefully. I am sure she must be celebrating with a bottle of champagne right now after using me to completely get rid of Ethan. Disgusting stuff! What was I supposed to do anyway? I couldn't stay neutral while Maria outshines me. That was never going to happen even though I knew my actions were going to upset Ethan. The thought of Maria having complete dominance over me was one of the reasons I confronted her for Ethan's release. As it stands now, I might have ju
Susan's POV It was shocking to Ethan to defend his parents as though his life depended on it. I thought he never liked his parents. Paul giggled. He finds Ethan kind of hilarious. He wasn't intimidated by Ethan's rage. He was confident that Ethan was never going to hit him. “So you're going to hit me in the face because I said the truth? I bet it's a hard pill for you to swallow. Did you finally decide to defend the same parent you never liked? Where's this fake emotion coming from? You are just a bloody coward. Hit me if you got the balls,” Rather than bowing out of the drama, Paul continued to provoke Ethan. Ethan's punch was left hanging up In the air. What Paul said hit him so hard that he lost consciousness. The Ethan I know would land a blow on Ethan a long time ago. Despite Ethan's refusal to fight Paul, I still didn't get closer to him. From what I know, it might be a trick to lure me to his side and become the scapegoat “So I thought. Fix your home
Susan's POV “Ethan, please I need you to promise me you won't get mad at me after the confession. It might as well get you upset, and I wouldn't want that to happen,” I begged Ethan. I prepared his mind for the big stage. That way, he doesn't get surprised after listening to me. After pleading with him not to get mad at me after the confession, I realized how stupid I sounded. That was one of the dumbest requests I ever made. I should know better than to trust the loyalty of a man who reeks of desperation. How can I demand such from an angry man? The way he expressed his anger, he might as well defeat a battalion of soldiers without a scratch on his skin. “Cross my heart, Susan. We both know I can never lie to you. You can trust me on this one. I promise to act accordingly. Just spill. You know I can never do anything to hurt you,” Ethan assured me with a soft tone. How he went from being a wild cat to a cool sheep baffles me. I knew his actions weren't genuine.
Susan's POVShould Ethan discover that I went to his Father for assistance, he's most likely to divorce him. That shows how much resentment he has for his Father. “Let's just go to your place for now. You need all the rest In the world,” Paul suggested in a soft tone. The things I said to him really got into his head and made him weak. He couldn't even look at me in the eyes. Poor him! He must hate me right nowHis attitude made me so emotional that I couldn't even leave immediately. My hands kept trembling behind the wheel. And my legs? I could barely feel them anymore. Deep down, I knew I needed to apologize. Paul just wanted to help and I treated him like a piece of shit. I didn't even acknowledge his contribution to Ethan's release. If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't have approached Maria for the second time And without making that decisive move, Ethan is most likely to spend more nights In detention. “I'm sorry for speaking to you in that tone of voice. I had no idea
Susan's POVExactly what you heard, ma'am. I believe you haven't lost your hearing ability. Your husband isn't here. He left without saying a word. This is the last time I am going to say this to you. And if you don't leave now, you might replace him in the cell," cop Aleeyah threatened me. She didn't even consider my mental health. After observing her rudeness towards me lately, I was starting to ask myself if I've offended her in the past without knowing. “Leave this place? You must be a clown because that certainly sounds funny to me. That's never happening. You don't expect me to leave without my husband, do you? It's all your fault. Why did you let him leave like that without dropping a message for me?” I argued with the loudest voice.I was prepared to cause a scene in the station without minding if it would lead to my arrest. It was the same attitude that made Maria have Ethan locked up in the cell for 48 hrs. And I am not willing to let the snake calamity befall me.
Susan's POV I tried to wrap my head around her reason for appearing that way and I ended up shooting point-blank “Take this,” she handed the documents to me before I could ask what they meant. “What's this about? I still don't get it,” I asked with a hint of confusion after examining the documents. “I'm pretty sure you can read, don't you?” She mocked me with the response. I stopped asking questions. Instead, I glanced through the documents to grasp their content. “The court restraining order. You want me to sign it on Ethan's behalf?” I asked after reading through. “You certainly haven't lost your reading ability, have you? Isn't that what you want?” She asked me. I nodded my head in response as she handed me a pen. I thought about countless things as I signed the agreement. Despite how small the pen was, I still found it difficult to hold it firmly. My hands keep trembling like a kid being forced to write to him in the classroom. Maria snatche
