Susan's POV

Burying my face in shame and bowing to the overwhelming pressure from the staff, I brought out my phone to FaceTime Ethan upon the staff's request.

It was the only way I could restore sanity in the company.

I've lost numerous battles in the last 24 hours already.

I am not ready to lose the hardworking staff.

They're beginning to lose their confidence in me.

They represent the company's progress.

Without their immense hard work and contribution, Frontline Gold Mine might have suffered a significant setback.

I Face timed Ethan. I was scared that he wasn't going to respond.

I can't imagine being humiliated by Ethan in the presence of the staff.

They will surely mock me for the rest of my life.

“Hey, Susan.

Thank goodness you called.

I've been trying to reach out to you for hours.

I was scared that something had happened to you. It's good to know that you're safe now.” Ethan hurriedly spoke as though he was being chased with a machete.

I haven't been gone for long, and he's already acting like I divorced him.

If only he could use the same energy to forget about Maria and everything that concerns her

I quickly interrupted Ethan to avert him from exposing our marital crises. “The Staff members want to speak with you,”

“You are in the company already? Please stay right there. I am coming to meet you,” Ethan said.

I saw the happiness that rested on his face. He must have missed me already.

“Nope, that won't be necessary. I got this under control. I'll be home shortly,” I turned Ethan down.

I proceed to pass the phone to Pamela to enable the staff to speak with Ethan.

While they spoke to Ethan, I went to stand next to Paul.

The joy in their heart couldn't be contained when they confirmed that Ethan had been granted bail.

I never knew they loved him that much.

I was made to believe that the whole staff despised him so much due to his unfriendly nature.

He's often hostile towards them. Not once have I witnessed Ethan smiling with any member of the staff.

Unlike Ethan's rigidity, I'm quite the opposite.

I treat the staff members like family. Never for once, have I yelled at them.

I don't hesitate to pardon anyone found wanting to violate the company's rules.

“We are sorry for doubting you, ma'am.

We just needed to be certain,” Pamela apologized on behalf of everyone as she returned the phone to me.

I accepted her apology and dismissed the staff without further punishment.

I was more concerned about the effectiveness of the staff and the progress of the company than anything else.

“Problems solved.

Who knows what the next one might be?” I sighed while my arms remained folded.

“Maria has dealt with you a lot.

She's slowly becoming your biggest nightmare. You should do something about that,” Paul said to me.

I depicted a thousand meanings from what he said.

I was still blank. I am aware of the problem. I didn't know how to tackle it.

“I presume you're having difficulty in figuring out a solution, right?” Paul winked at me after watching me pick on my nails like a child.

It's wonderful how he was able to read my thoughts and know what I wanted.

“Sure!

You have a solution.

I don't want to lose Ethan to Maria.

Her kids seemed to be the only thing that occupied his mind,” I confessed.

I saw no need to pretend when I was desperately in need of a way out.

“No way, you just said that. What about the court restraining order?

Did you tell Ethan about it? Is he aware that he might be locked up for good this time?” Paul expressed his shock.

That was precisely how I reacted when Ethan informed me of his decision to hire a private investigator to do the dirty Job.

“Honestly, I don't know. My home is tearing apart.

The moment it turns out that he's the father of those kids, it's over for me.” I cried.

Losing everything wasn't a worry.

The problem is the person behind the loss.

“Well, there might be a solution. You haven't completely lost yet.

You still stand a chance to save your home,” Paul assured me.

When I demanded a better explanation, Paul asked me to follow him outside.

According to him, he doesn't want a third party to eavesdrop on our conversation and know our secret.

“We are here now.

What do you have for me?” I asked Paul after we arrived outside.

“How about you threaten Maria to leave the country?” Paul suggested.

“Threat? Come on, Paul, we shouldn't be a fire when we are yet to put off the previous one.

That's certainly not a good idea. Please recommend another,”

I shook my head in disagreement with Paul's suggestion.

It was below what I expected from him.

“How about you tell me about Ethan's secret plot to hire a private investigator to keep tabs on her sons?

The sound of that will make her abscond with the kids,” Paul added another blunder.

“Are you being serious right now, Paul? You shouldn't be caught saying this in public,” I warned Paul.

The suggestion was a lot worse than the previous one.

I was confident that he would make me proud. Clearly, I was wrong.

I might be heading for my doom should I heed his advice.

“Wait while I figure something out. You have got to be patient because it might take too long,” Paul assured me. He gave me hope that something can still be done.

While I waited for him to come up with a solution, I also racked my head.

I figured it wouldn't make any sense to depend on him for everything when I could still make use of my brain.

Finally, a thought brushed my head.

Although dangerous, it is a smart one.

“Let's abduct the boys and make Maria suffer.

She will be left with no choice but to leave the city,”

I whispered silently.

Before speaking, I scanned the entire area just to be sure no one was approaching or listening to us from a distance.

Susan's POVPaul covered my mouth with his palm to prevent the workers from hearing me. He forced me inside the car and shut the door. It goes to show how careful he wants to be. “Have you suddenly lost your mind? Why would you even come up with a dangerous plan like that? What if you get caught?” Paul berated me for my suggestion. I was slightly disappointed in him. I thought he was going to take sides with me. I was wrong. And this time, we both seemed to be on different pages. “Come on, Paul. I did nothing wrong. It was just a harmless suggestion. Besides, you don't even have a better option.” I protested.I justified my actions with a thousand explanations, yet it wasn't enough to convince Paul to work with me. He still thinks I'm losing my mind. I decided not to speak with Paul about the idea anymore to avoid being reported to the police.“How about we go talk to his Father? I believe that could help,” Paul suggested. I didn't waste time kicking against it. Mine sounded

Susan's POV“Can you quit the questions and start coming immediately? It's an hour before the company closes for the day. You'd get the answers you seek once you show up,” Paul disclosed. He terminated the conversation without giving me the chance to speak further. He must have been sick and tired of my constant questions. Rather than staying back to worry my head, I drove straight to the company. I didn't bother calling Paul for more because I knew he would never answer the phone. Upon arriving at the company, the atmosphere I met didn't seem too encouraging for me. The whole place was quiet and void of staff, as though someone died. I got worried and glared at my wristwatch to ensure it wasn't the closing hour. “The company hasn't closed for the day yet. So where the fuck is everyone?" I asked myself rhetorically. “Over here,” a voice responded from a distance, even though I wasn't expecting anyone to hear me. From a distance, I saw Paul waving his hands while signaling me

  • Secrets and Second Chances    Chapter 23: Picking Up The Broken Pieces

Susan's POV I returned to where my car was parked and wept like a child who just lost her mother. Ethan made me regret what I did. He had zero regard for me. I wished I never made a move to ensure he was released from prison. I wished I had sat back and listened to Ethan when he assured me that his lawyer was going to handle the situation. Maria made me believe that the freedom of Ethan rested on her shoulders and I believed her. I fell for her tricks without doing my homework. Sadly for me, I failed woefully. I am sure she must be celebrating with a bottle of champagne right now after using me to completely get rid of Ethan. Disgusting stuff! What was I supposed to do anyway? I couldn't stay neutral while Maria outshines me. That was never going to happen even though I knew my actions were going to upset Ethan. The thought of Maria having complete dominance over me was one of the reasons I confronted her for Ethan's release. As it stands now, I might have ju

  • Secrets and Second Chances    Chapter 22: Clustered Emotions

Susan's POV It was shocking to Ethan to defend his parents as though his life depended on it. I thought he never liked his parents. Paul giggled. He finds Ethan kind of hilarious. He wasn't intimidated by Ethan's rage. He was confident that Ethan was never going to hit him. “So you're going to hit me in the face because I said the truth? I bet it's a hard pill for you to swallow. Did you finally decide to defend the same parent you never liked? Where's this fake emotion coming from? You are just a bloody coward. Hit me if you got the balls,” Rather than bowing out of the drama, Paul continued to provoke Ethan. Ethan's punch was left hanging up In the air. What Paul said hit him so hard that he lost consciousness. The Ethan I know would land a blow on Ethan a long time ago. Despite Ethan's refusal to fight Paul, I still didn't get closer to him. From what I know, it might be a trick to lure me to his side and become the scapegoat “So I thought. Fix your home

  • Secrets and Second Chances    Chapter 21: Actions and Consequences

Susan's POV “Ethan, please I need you to promise me you won't get mad at me after the confession. It might as well get you upset, and I wouldn't want that to happen,” I begged Ethan. I prepared his mind for the big stage. That way, he doesn't get surprised after listening to me. After pleading with him not to get mad at me after the confession, I realized how stupid I sounded. That was one of the dumbest requests I ever made. I should know better than to trust the loyalty of a man who reeks of desperation. How can I demand such from an angry man? The way he expressed his anger, he might as well defeat a battalion of soldiers without a scratch on his skin. “Cross my heart, Susan. We both know I can never lie to you. You can trust me on this one. I promise to act accordingly. Just spill. You know I can never do anything to hurt you,” Ethan assured me with a soft tone. How he went from being a wild cat to a cool sheep baffles me. I knew his actions weren't genuine.

  • Secrets and Second Chances    Chapter 20: A Visit From The Dead

Susan's POVShould Ethan discover that I went to his Father for assistance, he's most likely to divorce him. That shows how much resentment he has for his Father. “Let's just go to your place for now. You need all the rest In the world,” Paul suggested in a soft tone. The things I said to him really got into his head and made him weak. He couldn't even look at me in the eyes. Poor him! He must hate me right nowHis attitude made me so emotional that I couldn't even leave immediately. My hands kept trembling behind the wheel. And my legs? I could barely feel them anymore. Deep down, I knew I needed to apologize. Paul just wanted to help and I treated him like a piece of shit. I didn't even acknowledge his contribution to Ethan's release. If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't have approached Maria for the second time And without making that decisive move, Ethan is most likely to spend more nights In detention. “I'm sorry for speaking to you in that tone of voice. I had no idea

  • Secrets and Second Chances    Chapter 19: Where is Ethan?

Susan's POVExactly what you heard, ma'am. I believe you haven't lost your hearing ability. Your husband isn't here. He left without saying a word. This is the last time I am going to say this to you. And if you don't leave now, you might replace him in the cell," cop Aleeyah threatened me. She didn't even consider my mental health. After observing her rudeness towards me lately, I was starting to ask myself if I've offended her in the past without knowing. “Leave this place? You must be a clown because that certainly sounds funny to me. That's never happening. You don't expect me to leave without my husband, do you? It's all your fault. Why did you let him leave like that without dropping a message for me?” I argued with the loudest voice.I was prepared to cause a scene in the station without minding if it would lead to my arrest. It was the same attitude that made Maria have Ethan locked up in the cell for 48 hrs. And I am not willing to let the snake calamity befall me.

  • Secrets and Second Chances    Chapter 18: Expectations Met With Disappointment

Susan's POV I tried to wrap my head around her reason for appearing that way and I ended up shooting point-blank “Take this,” she handed the documents to me before I could ask what they meant. “What's this about? I still don't get it,” I asked with a hint of confusion after examining the documents. “I'm pretty sure you can read, don't you?” She mocked me with the response. I stopped asking questions. Instead, I glanced through the documents to grasp their content. “The court restraining order. You want me to sign it on Ethan's behalf?” I asked after reading through. “You certainly haven't lost your reading ability, have you? Isn't that what you want?” She asked me. I nodded my head in response as she handed me a pen. I thought about countless things as I signed the agreement. Despite how small the pen was, I still found it difficult to hold it firmly. My hands keep trembling like a kid being forced to write to him in the classroom. Maria snatche
