Chapter 3

Author: Lolo
Viola quickly nodded along. "Go ahead and grab your lunch, David. I've got things under control, so don't worry."

David smiled. "Alright, if you say so. Tell Elden to swing by my place when he's changed; I've got something for him."

Viola let out a long breath of relief and immediately nodded before David walked off without a doubt.

I had no strength left to scream for help, so it seemed that I was destined to await death at the bottom of this well.

Closing my eyes in despair, I listened to the frantic beating of my heart in the silent water before Ron's voice suddenly crackled in my ear.

"Are you still hoping to get rescued, Elden? What makes you think I'm just going to stand by and watch you succeed?

"I'm telling you—even if you die down there, no one's coming for your help. So, get on your knees and beg, and I might send you some oxygen."

My eyelids grew heavy as I listened to their endless insults. In that moment, memories flashed before my eyes like an old movie strip.

The thought of dying at Viola and Ron's hands filled me with bitter unwillingness.

Why should I suffer such humiliation? If that were the case, I would drag everyone down with me.

As the thought crossed my mind, my eyes snapped open. I stared at the drill bit and let out a cold laugh.

When I gripped the drill bit, the icy touch brought a sliver of clarity clarity back to my mind.

It was too solid to be smashed with my weakened strength, but I knew that I could dismantle it. If I succeeded, the scattered parts would sink into the water and make it impossible to continue drilling even with a replacement.

I tightened my grip around the drill bit and began wrenching with all my might.

The sound of my efforts echoed through the water, so Viola and Ron immediately noticed something amiss.

"Why are you still causing trouble? Have you lost your mind?" Viola growled through gritted teeth.

When I didn't answer and kept turning the screws on the drill bit, they finally understood my intent to bring us all down together.

Viola's panicked voice rang in my ear. "Elden, stop! I'll get you up right now, so don't do anything reckless! It was just a joke!

"Please! If this goes wrong, we're all doomed!"

I stayed silent and only sped up my movements, so Viola immediately had Ron open the cover. "Hurry up and open it! If you hadn't come up with this stupid idea, we wouldn't be in this mess!"

Ron quietly grumbled, "How was I supposed to know he'd still have the strength to cause trouble after being down there for so long?

"We'll deal with him once he's up here. Next time, I'll make him kneel and bow to me."

Reluctantly, he started moving the heavy cover.

A loud rumbling echoed from above as it was dragged away, but my vision was obscured by the murky well water.

Upon surfacing, the drilling diver had to sign off on the timestamp for the shift and to prevent accidents. Without my signature, the two of them couldn't prove that I had intentionally damaged the drill.

I looked forward to seeing if their family fortunes could cover an eight-billion-dollar construction project.

Viola went from begging me to stop to cursing and hurling insults, but I never showed any reaction. Ron had donned his gear and moved the cover away, diving into the water to stop me.

Once he was underwater, he charged toward me and yelled, "Stop! You're insane! If you want to die, just do it and don't drag us down with you!"

It was a pity that he was too late.

With my last ounce of strength, I ripped the final bolt free. The drill bit fell apart, and the heavy steel segments plummeted into the bottom of the water, sending up a massive splash.

A massive plume of mud completely clouded the water in the region.

I gave Ron a wave, then heavily closed my eyes and let myself sink.

Above ground, the technician monitoring the underwater feed saw the drill bit collapse. He shot to his feet, grabbed a loudspeaker, and yelled in terror, "The drill bit's dropped. Emergency response to the well, now!"

"I'm begging you, Elden… Please let me go! I don't wanna die here!" Viola begged.Adam glanced between us and suspiciously asked, "Do you… know each other?"I looked down at Viola's tear-seamed face and smudged makeup before saying, "I don't know her."She clearly hadn't expected me to deny her. Panicked, she wiped at the foundation on her face and said, "It's me, Viola! I'm your fiancee!"When she kept clinging to me, Adam immediately signaled the manager, who promptly grabbed a whip and lashed it hard on her."How dare you annoy an honored guest! It seems I've been far too lenient!"A bloody gash split open across her back. Her body jerked violently, and the agonizing pain knocked her unconscious.Just before she totally passed out, I walked over and gave her an amused look. "Viola, do you really not remember who sent you here?"In that moment, her eyes burned with rage and hatred, but she could never turn it on me again. After spending two days with Adam, I returned home to

"Please let me go, Elden," Ron begged. "You love Viola, don't you? Take her, and do whatever you want with her!"Viola jolted awake at his shouting and cried out, "Spare my life! This was all Ron's idea, and I never wanted you dead!"At her words, I glanced at her with interest and casually said, "Are you admitting that you tried to kill me back then?"She nodded frantically with tears streaming down her face as she pleaded, "He said if you died, your family would receive ten million dollars in compensation. We could give your parents just a few million dollars and keep the rest."That was his plan. I swear I didn't know anything else!"Listening to her words, Ron exploded into curses and screamed at her. Neither of them noticed the phone I had quietly set aside. When I decided I had heard enough, I stood up, picked up the phone, and untied their restraints. They gave me a confused look, then fled the abandoned warehouse without looking back.I took the phone straight to the pol

Once Viola and I were clear of the construction site, I looked at her and calmly said what had been sitting in my chest all along."Let's call off the engagement, Viola. From now on, we're done. Let's just go our separate ways."She froze, then grabbed my hand tightly and pleaded, "I wasn't thinking straight, Elden. Just forgive me this once; I know I've messed up!"Looking at her pale, tear-streaked face, I felt none of the love I once had for her. So, I firmly pushed her hand away and shook my head. "You know me. Once I make up my mind, I won't go back."I had once been willing to fight the world to be with her, and now, I was just as willing to walk away from everything to be free of her.Ignoring Viola, I turned around and walked home alone. I used to believe that our love was real, but now, it turned out that I was a fool all along. After returning home, I heard noises from the bedroom and went up to check. The butler, George Murray, was there, looking awkwardly at me an

Listening to Viola's blatant lies, I let out a cold laugh and slowly clapped. "Is that so? You can really talk nonsense and even call this a misunderstanding, can't you?"With that, I grabbed the dive logbook and pointed at my entry time. "Look at the logs, everyone! I started diving at 10:48 am. Standard safety protocol states that if there's no signal for 20 minutes, the surface crew has to pull the ropes to check on the diver."But look at the clock—what time is it now?"Someone pulled out their phone to check and blurted out, "Fuck! It's 11:30 am! You were down there for 42 minutes!"I nodded and handed the log to David. In our life-risking line of work, dive times were strictly recorded, and a second person was always assigned as a witness. But Viola and Ron had kept me trapped underwater for over half an hour.Even if Viola might not know the protocols, Ron was an on-site professional. There was no way he didn't know that he was breaking every safety law in the book. That

Viola hysterically shrieked, "You actually did it, Elden! Have you lost your mind?"David was the first to arrive at the well. He hauled on the ropes to drag both Ron and me upward. The moment my head broke the surface, I gasped and desperately gulped in air.David watched as we emerged from the water and confusedly asked, "Elden, weren't you already up and changed?"I glanced at Viola and Ron. The former's eyes flicked rapidly around before she pointed at me and feigned a pained, grief-stricken look. "Why would you ruin the drill bit on purpose, Elden? That's an eight-billion-dollar project we're talking about, so you're ruining everyone's lives."The workers crowded in and began hurling accusations at me after listening to her words."Unbelievable, Elden. You look decent, but who knew you'd pull such a low trick behind our backs!""What a traitor! Ms. Jenkins must've been blind to get engaged to him!"I listened to the crowd in silence and looked straight at Viola, who shot
