It's him.

She quickly recognized the man when the light on the lamp post illuminated his face as he moved closer.

"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to scare you." The man quickly apologized, raising his hands before him to show that he meant no harm.

Honestly, she did not get spooked easily. Being an orphan, she had learned to adapt and survive in the wild jungle of the city.

She had learned to be brave because there was no other way. Nonetheless, she could not help but think of the call she received the other day. She believed it was the reason she was slightly jumpy.

"It's ok. You didn't scare me. Startle, maybe." She stood straight as she waited for the familiar man to approach her. "I thought I was alone. I was certainly not expecting to see you here."

However, how could she notice anyone else when she was so self-absorbed with her situation? Anyway, she gradually relaxed, knowing he was no threat to her.

"So, are you lost or something?" She did not want to think he was stalking her, just like she initially thought.

Why would he?

What would a man like him want to do with someone like her?

It just did not make sense.

"No, I don't think so. I think I'm in the right place." He looked around him, nodding as if confirming his statement.

She could only look at him with confusion, thinking he might be losing his marbles. What would a man like him want to do with this stinky dump?

"If you're looking for the restaurant, the entrance is on the other side." She pointed to the street around the corner, thinking that was what he might be looking for.

"No..." But the man quickly replied, shaking his head.

"No? Mr. Saunders..." Again, she was baffled. But she could not finish her sentence as he interrupted her.

"Actually..." He stepped a bit closer. "I'm here to see you, Charlie." The man looked at her with a friendly smile.

Of course, it came to her as a surprise.

"Me?" She pointed at herself while turning her head, left and right, checking if someone else was with them. But it was just her.

Again, she could not help but wonder what it would be like to have a father like him. It must be great to have someone looking for her, thinking about her welfare.

Wake up, Charlie. Stop daydreaming.

She must have done something wrong. It was probably the reason this man was looking for her. Or he might have changed his mind and wanted his gifts back.

What else could it be, Charlie?

"Yes, you, my silly child." The man once again smiled at her, looking amused at her reaction. "I came here to talk to you."

"Mr. Saunders, what is that you need from me?" She could not think of one. She believed someone like her had nothing to offer him.

"I hope you'll call me James. But anyway, I don't want to waste your precious time. So I won't beat around the bush." He sat on the steps beside her and urged her to do the same.

She was stunned by his action, thinking about his expensive clothes, soiled by the dirty steps. Nevertheless, she followed his lead.

"I came here to offer you a proposal." He turned to her with a guarded look. It was as if he might be studying her immediate response.

Of course, her eyes widened while her lips parted open. She was shocked and confused.

Was this man proposing to her? But he was old enough to be his father.

No!

That could not be it.

"Pardon?" She must have misinterpreted his intention. Maybe he was offering her a higher-paying job. She badly needed one.

"Remember when I told you I want to introduce you to my son. Now that your fiancé is out of the picture. You might want to reconsider." He told her.

"Oh! I thought you were about to offer me a job." She mumbled. Nonetheless, she thought she might be hearing things.

Again, why would this man want to set her up with his son? That was just ridiculous.

"Well, you can look at it that way." He nonchalantly said, shrugging his shoulders as if he found her response entertaining. "A job with a high reward."

"Wait!" She was more confused than ever. Suddenly, she felt like this was a dream as she pinched herself. "Ouch!" That hurts. Therefore, this was very real.

"What I'm saying is that I want to offer you a chance to change your life. If you agree to my proposal to meet my son, marry him, and stay married for a year, I will pay you a more than generous amount."

"Ha!" She knew she had heard him correctly, but still, it was taking her a while to process his words. "Marry?"

Why?

"Why me?" Again, she might be beautiful, but other than that, she had nothing else to offer. "I'm sure you can find other women more qualified to marry your son."

She did not go to college. She barely had a stable job. She was an orphan, for heaven's sake. Then, she had a past that she could not say she could be proud of.

So, why would this man pick her?

Unless—

"What is wrong with your son?" Suddenly, the thought crossed her mind.

Why else would this man insist on finding a bride for his son if there was nothing wrong with him?

"I chose you because I can see that you have a good heart. I think you will be good for my son." He answered her first question.

"Oh!" She did not expect that from him. But she was flattered, considering his kind words as a compliment.

Then, he mildly laughed as he glanced at her. "But you are right about my son. There is something wrong with him."

Now, she was suddenly wary, but a bit curious too.

What could be wrong with him when his father appeared to be perfect?

"He is very much like me before I met my wife." He continued, but that did not exactly make any sense to her.

How could that be a flaw?

"Charlie! Where have you been?" Her friend rushed her to the locker room, assisting her with changing into her uniform for the night.Of course, she was late. But in her defense, her last gig took longer to finish. Then, her car broke down in the middle of the road. But she badly needed this job. She could not fuck this up. It was not just her she had to think of, remembering her last phone call."I'm sorry, Emmy." She did not want to put her friend in a tight spot. "I'm here now. I promise I'll make up for my tardiness."So far, she had been working tirelessly, juggling between her modeling career, at least what was left of it, cleaning apartments, waitressing, and whatever job she could find."Hurry up! We are about to start serving." Her friend leaned on one of the locker doors while waiting for her to finish buttoning up her white blouse and clipping her black bowtie."Thanks again for helping me get this job." She hugged her tightly before letting her go. "I desperately need this

"It was great doing business with you again, Mr. Saunders." His long-time investor, Mr. Johnson, eagerly signed the contract for their latest collaboration."I'm sure this would be another profitable partnership." He assured the older man as he concluded the meeting. His assistant immediately took the signed documents and politely escorted his last appointment for the day to the door. On the other hand, all he had longed for was to go home and lie on his soft bed. It had been a long and exhausting afternoon, but then again, he remembered that he had barely had enough sleep last night. "Aaahhha!" He could not stop the yawn that escaped his lips, feeling the fatigue in every nerve ending in his body.Although he did not have a hangover, last night's activities and this morning's intense workouts sapped out most of his energy.Automatically, he pulled his tie loose, stretched his arms, and relaxed his back on his chair. Then, he lifted his feet on his desk while staring at the blank sp

"Great job, Sweetheart, as always." Jake complimented her work immediately after their photoshoot. "But do you have a minute? We need to talk." Her boss ushered her to follow him to his office.Suddenly, her heart skipped a beat, wondering if this was it. Was Jake going to fire her? But could she blame him?She could still remember his disappointed expression when she arrived an hour late. He was about to cancel the shoot, but luckily, she convinced him to proceed as planned."What is it, Jack?" She bravely asked, even though she dreaded hearing the answer to her question. She uncomfortably took the chair her boss offered, knowing this was not a social call. The look on her boss's face was enough to tell her everything she needed to hear. No! Please, I can't get fired. She twisted and pulled her fingers as she twisted and turned on her seat while she agitatedly waited for the inevitable verdict."Someone is pressuring me to take you off this project." He reluctantly told her. He did

"I want those papers on my desk by tomorrow." He barked on the phone, slightly furious with Donald, his assistant, who interrupted his morning with a problem they could have avoided if they had dealt with it correctly."Yes, Sir," Donald responded with a shaky and apologetic tone. "By the way, your father wants to see you." His assistant quickly added. He had been expecting that. His father had been hounding him for days, but he had always managed to stay clear of him and avoid his calls."Fine!" But he could not keep dodging him. "Tell him that I'll come over tonight." Then, he ended the call.He knew precisely what his father wanted from him. But he was not ready to give in to his demands. Nonetheless, did he have a choice?"Hmm!" He heavily sighed, throwing his phone on the counter out of exasperation. He grabbed the towel he had hastily tossed on the kitchen stool earlier and dried the sweat on his body. Then, he took a cold bottle of water from his fridge to cool himself down. H

"Ssshhh! Shut up!" She whispered-shouted simultaneously when an annoying sound continuously pierced her eardrums, waking her up from her deep slumber."Umm!" That freaking hurts. A shooting pain spread throughout her skull as she tried to open her eyes. Automatically, her hands rubbed her temples as the throbbing in her head intensified.Damn! What was that? She grabbed her pillow on both sides of her head and tried to cover her ears. But it was a futile effort as the ringing in her head persisted. Eventually, she gave up, squinting her eyes against the bright light and searching for the offending clangor.Kring! Kring! Kring!Oh!

"Or we can...?" Suddenly, he was on her face, staring into her eyes. Then, his arms caged her to her seat, leaving her with not much room to move. For an insane minute, she felt like she was drowning in his dark eyes as she looked closer into their depths. For a crazy second, she parted her lips, believing he was about to kiss her.Don't be stupid, Charlie.Until reality set in, reminding her she might be setting herself up for another disappointment. As much as she wanted to act tough, she had never done anything without involving her heart. But could she do it now, make her heart as hard as a stone, keep her emotions in check, and act like she did not care? Damn the consequences."Hey! Why don't we stick to the drink?" Immediately, her hand pushed against his chest, forcing him to straighten in his seat and create a space between them."Ok, if that is what you want." He

  • She's Trouble: His Bride with a Dollar Sign   5 - Give him a chance

It's him.A coincidence? It probably was. There was no other explanation for it as she readily recognized the man even in the dim lights. It was him, no doubt about it.On the other hand, what if it was fate? The idea suddenly popped into her head. "Hmm!" That was something she would have never considered, especially after her heartbreak. She had become a pessimist. She had stopped believing in fairy tales and destinies when none of her wishes and dreams ever came true. Instead, she had to deal with the reality of disappointments, one after another. "Nah, who was she kidding?" She silently mumbled, keeping her thoughts to herself. A man like him would never be interested in a girl like her. Well, at least, not seriously, remembering what Collin had done to her. He might look interested, but she believed it was superficial. He would only play with her feelings and throw her away like trash once he had his fun."Don't be ridiculous, Anna. He is not interested in me." She dismissed
