Chapter 11

The day had been long and as I made my way home, I found it impossible to work with Jake’s scrutinizing gaze looking my way constantly. I had no idea how I was going to get those documents for Carter. I didn’t even want to the idea made me feel sick that I was eating even less now. I can’t be responsible for letting someone like that go free.

I hadn’t had a chance to pay anyone yet as I’d not been allowed my phone, that sinking feeling in my stomach grew as I got closer and closer to home. I knew what Karen had called about or at least I was pretty certain I knew. I just hoped if I could transfer her some of the money it would buy me some more time for the rest.

I made my way up the steps to my building, it was oddly quiet normally Karen waited by the door for when I can home so she could pounce on me with when she would get her money. That was the first warning sign that something was not right.
