It was 4:30 PM, and I had just gotten out of the Uber I had ordered from my mom's place. It was drizzling moderately, so I hurried to our doorstep and rang the doorbell. 'Our doorstep', that's Rhett's and mine.

Rhett was my boyfriend, and yes, we were sharing an apartment because we would be getting married in a few months. I was all over the moon for it.

I was making my mom proud by getting married to a rich guy because of our family background. She was the mastermind behind it all, but I understood that it wasn't just about me. It's for the greater good of my children not to suffer just the way I did.

Rhett came from a family of old wealth. His late grandfather was the richest simp in the state, and so the wealth kept passing on to their legitimate sons.

My mother had told me, all I have to do is give them an heir and every wealth of the Sango's will come lurking at our door.

I was just going to be a pawn in the general sphere of the game, and my job was to get my family out of the mediocre life we were living and make sure my children would not experience the life my father gave me.

He left my mother and me when I was three, and it was difficult for my mother to raise me all alone. She has managed to train me in school, and now she feels like it's time for some Thanksgiving payback.

Rhett had insisted I stop working with the publishing company I was with and move in with him since we were getting married...

The door was opened by Sawyer, the doorman, who nodded courteously at me, even though I noticed a look of confusion on his face.

''Miss Starks?" He called out and I smiled in response as I walked past him and headed towards the elevators.

I wasn't supposed to be here today; I was supposed to spend the weekend at my Mom's place while we planned the wedding ceremony, which is in a week. What was wrong with surprising my fiancé by coming home earlier than expected?

I thought with an eye roll. I took the elevator to our floor and thought about my life as it ascended.

At twenty-five, I managed to pull my mother from the slum area we lived in and relocated to New York City. I wouldn't have found my prince charming after all.

 I have dated three guys, with Rhett being the fourth, and I am just grateful that this one is leading to marriage.

The other relationships hadn't been this close, so this is a sign that this will last. Right? Rhett is the kind of guy most girls would want to get married to; he is rich, charming, and good at bedroom activities.

However, he is too much of a spender, bossy, and a little too arrogant for my liking, but I am okay with it.

He always talks about himself and what his family expects of him, and I always thought that was sweet and nice of him; placing his family first even if it meant before me sometimes.

Who was I kidding? He is the eldest son and has responsibilities, so I had long quit whining and focused my energy on something else, providing an heir for him.

As I thought, I rolled the cute diamond engagement ring Rhett had given to me the day he proposed. I smiled at the thought.

It wasn't going to be hard to start a journey of forever with Rhett, we've had our good and bad times which was inevitable among couples.

The last time we had differences, it was my best friend, Martha, who got me back to his house after we were pretty wasted from the girls' night out we went.

She was the most outgoing girl I had ever met. Sweet and flirty and always cheering me up when I was sad with drinks and parties.

Martha was a hot blonde with clear blue eyes, beautiful legs, and the electrifying body of a model, unlike me, who was a brunette with normal grey eyes and a less slim body, which some would call chubby, even though I wasn't.

But even with our differences, Martha and I were still best of friends regardless.

The elevator chimed, signaling that I had arrived on our floor.

Rhett and I were the only ones who occupied this floor. This explained why the floor was usually quiet and there was only one door at the hall's extreme.

I took out my own keys and unlocked the door. I entered our apartment, closed the door securely behind me.

Rhett probably wasn't home now since it was still early so I was just going to prepare dinner and wait for him in my favorite red lingerie. The perfect surprise for one's fiancé. I thought.

I placed my bag on the luxurious white couch in the living room and was about to go into the kitchen to grab a glass of water when my eyes landed on the island that served as a mini bar, and I spotted Rhett's phone and car keys.

Rhett was home? He wasn't supposed to be home until 7pm.

And was that? Was that a woman's panties on the floor?

"Rhett?" I called looking around. I looked towards our bedroom door and that was when I heard a cringe.

I know I can sometimes imagine hearing things but was I also imagining hearing sounds coming from our bedroom? Grunting and screaming sounds?

I moved quickly to the bedroom door and yanked the door open to behold a sight that sickened my stomach and made me want to puke.

"What the fuck?!!" I managed to scream in deep shock as I took in the scene that was going on before me.

Right before my eyes, my beloved fiancé and my best friend were on the bed, with Rhett on top of her, covered in a white blanket…
