The fourth impact split the chamber from wall to wall.

Dust shook loose from the ceiling, and chunks of ancient stone crashed around them as the buried kingdom trembled under the force of whatever was moving below. Seraphina pulled Elara and Cael against her, turning her body to shield them while Dusk-born planted her feet nearby with the Sword of Dusk raised.

The creature wearing Seraphina's face didn't flinch.

It stood over the widening crack and stared into the darkness beneath its feet.

“Enough.”The word rolled through the chamber again.Seraphina stopped breathing. It had come from beneath her feet, but the voice was hers. Not an echo. Not a resemblance distorted by ancient stone. It carried the same cadence, the same quiet edge she heard whenever she spoke to herself in the dark. The creature heard it too.Its head snapped toward the floor.Above Elara and Cael, Dawn and Dusk trembled in the crimson light. Then the buried kingdom seemed to draw breath.Seraphina felt the movement through the soles of her boots. The stone beneath her shifted by a fraction, released a low groan, then settled again. Dust sifted from the ceiling.Dusk-born pushed herself away from the pillar. Blood marked the corner of her mouth as she reached for the Sword of Dusk.“Seraphina,” she said, “those blades aren't listening to you.”Seraphina looked up at the crossed swords.“I know.”“No.” Dusk-born steadied herself against the wall. “You don't.”The silver-eyed woman hadn't moved. Her ga

The eyes opened beneath the kingdom.Seraphina felt the vibration before she heard the sound. It traveled through the soles of her feet, climbed her legs, and settled like a second heartbeat beneath her ribs. Ancient stones groaned around them as something enormous shifted below the buried city, sending dust drifting from the ceiling.Cael pressed against her side while Elara reached for her through Dusk-born's arms.“Mama!”Seraphina caught Elara's hand and pulled both children close. “I've got you.”The reassurance sounded steadier than she felt.Across the chamber, the silver-eyed woman remained completely still. She watched the cracks spreading through the floor without a trace of surprise.Aurelith was different. The ancient Queen stared into the darkness with an expression Seraphina had never seen on her before.“It’s awake,” Aurelith whispered.Seraphina turned on her. “You knew this would happen.”“I knew it could.”“That isn't an answer.”Aurelith looked at her, silver eyes r

Seraphina couldn't breathe. The woman stood beyond the broken wall, half-hidden by the darkness. Long silver hair fell over her shoulders, catching the faint light from the cracks beneath the floor. Her face was almost an exact copy of Seraphina's, but her eyes carried a colder light, silver around the edges and gold at the center.Cael's fingers tightened around Seraphina's hand.“That's her.”Seraphina kept her eyes on the woman. “Who?”“I don't know what she is,” Cael whispered. “But she's the one who taught me your name.”The woman stepped forward. Her bare foot touched the ancient stone, and a thin line of silver light spread beneath it. The guardian immediately raised its head. A low growl rolled through the chamber, but the woman didn't even glance at the creature.Aurelith moved between them.“Stay back.”The woman stopped and studied her for several seconds. Then she smiled.“Still protecting her?”Aurelith's expression hardened. “You shouldn't be here.”“I've been here longe

“Mama?”The voice came from beneath them again, faint but unmistakably young.Seraphina froze. The darkness beyond the broken wall seemed to swallow every other sound. Even the distant groan of the buried kingdom disappeared beneath the weight of that single word.Elara had stopped crying. She stared toward the floor, her face pale.“I know that voice,” she whispered.Seraphina looked at her. “Who is it?”Elara swallowed and tightened her grip on Dusk-born’s hand. “He used to call me that.”The words made no sense.Seraphina looked toward Aurelith. The ancient Queen had gone still, her silver eyes fixed on the cracked floor.“Who is beneath us?”Aurelith took a slow breath. “Your son.”The answer struck harder than any weapon.Seraphina stared at her. “My what?”“Your son,” Aurelith repeated. “Veyra had two children.”Seraphina's fingers tightened around the Sword of Dawn. “I remember Elara.”“You remember the daughter who survived into the life you know now,” Aurelith said. “You don'

The wall broke.A crack raced from floor to ceiling as the fingers pressing against the other side tightened. Black stone peeled away in heavy slabs, revealing a darkness that seemed deeper than the chamber itself.Seraphina planted her feet and raised Dawn and Dusk."Elara!"Her daughter's voice came through the barrier."Mama!"Seraphina brought both swords down together. Dawn and Dusk struck the black stone, releasing a burst of crimson light that tore through several layers of rock. The barrier shuddered beneath the impact, but it refused to fall.Something laughed on the other side. The sound was soft.Almost gentle.Aurelith stepped beside Seraphina and examined the cracks spreading across the wall. "Don't waste your strength.""My daughter is behind that wall.""I know.""Then help me."Aurelith reached toward the barrier but stopped before her fingers touched it. The black stone pulsed beneath her hand like living flesh."It wants you to break through."Seraphina stared at the
