The cry came first, thin and furious, and for one shining second Dorcas Starling forgot

every hour of pain.

“Is he breathing?” She pushed up on her elbows, hair plastered to her forehead. “Is he

okay? Please, let me hold him.”

“A healthy boy,” the doctor said. He did not look at her. He looked at the door.

A nurse wrapped the baby in a white blanket and carried him across the room before

Dorcas could lift her arms. She did not pause. She did not look back.

“Wait.” Dorcas’s voice cracked. “One minute. I only want to see his face.”

Nobody answered. The monitor beside her kept beeping, steady, as if nothing had

changed.

Her phone lay face-up on the bedside table. She had texted her father at dawn and again

at noon. Delivered, not read. Her stepmother and stepbrother hadn’t replied at all.

Nine months of humming her mother’s lullaby to him through her skin. Nine months of

folding tiny yellow clothes. And she had not even seen his face.

The door swung open and her heart lifted. Isaiah. Isaiah, who had held her hand

through eleven hours of labour and stepped out twenty minutes ago to “get some air.”

Her fiancé.

But he was not alone.

Emily walked in beside him in a fitted red dress and heels, hair blown out, lipstick

perfect. Emily, who was supposed to be at home in bed, pale and weak, waiting for her

next transfusion. Emily, whose hands had shaken so badly last month that Dorcas had

cut up her dinner for her.“Emily?” Dorcas stared. “What are you doing out of bed? You shouldn’t be walking

around, your levels—”

“Don’t.” Emily rolled her eyes. “You sound like a nurse.”

She crossed the room and took the baby from the nurse’s arms as if she had done it a

hundred times. She tucked him against her shoulder.

Dorcas stopped breathing. “Why do you have him?”

“Because he’s mine.”

The words made no sense. Dorcas looked at Isaiah, waiting for him to laugh, to correct

it.

Isaiah checked his watch.

“Isaiah.” Dorcas’s voice shook. “Tell her to give him back.”

“Lower your voice,” he said, not looking up.

“He’s my son.”

“He’s a legal matter now.”

“I was never sick, Dorcas,” Emily said. She sounded almost bored. “Not one day.”

“That’s not— I gave you my blood. Fourteen times.”

“Fourteen?” Emily smiled. “I lost count.” She turned her foot to show off a new heel.

“Isaiah bought these last week. Do you like them?”

Dorcas looked at her bare arm, smooth and unmarked, and realized she had never once

seen a bruise there. She had been too busy being grateful to notice.

“The donations kept you tired and busy,” Isaiah said, in the flat, patient voice he used on

waiters who got his order wrong. “A woman worried about her friend doesn’t ask

questions about her own treatment. It was the simplest way to keep you cooperative.”Dorcas thought of every Saturday in that clinic chair, a needle in her arm and a paper

cup of orange juice, smiling across the room at her best friend.

“The baby,” she whispered.

“Is ours. Mine and Emily’s.” Isaiah finally looked at her. There was nothing in his face.

No guilt. No warmth. “You were the surrogate. The paperwork is in order. There will be

a payment for your trouble, as long as you stay quiet.”

“A payment.” Dorcas repeated it as if it were a foreign word. “You told me he was ours.”

“You were told what you needed to hear.”

“I never signed anything.”

“You’ll find that you did.”

Emily lifted the edge of the blanket and peered inside. “He has Isaiah’s eyes,” she said,

and smiled at Dorcas. “Lucky for him, he got nothing from you.”

A tiny fist had worked its way free of the blanket. Dorcas stared at it, and could not make

her lungs work.

Dorcas tried to sit up and her body screamed. “You’re lying. We were getting married in

the spring—”

The nurse stared at the floor. The doctor studied his clipboard. Nobody in the room was

going to help her. She was on her own.

“Dorcas.” Isaiah sighed, the way you sigh at a child who won’t stop crying. “Go home to

your father’s house. Rest. Be sensible.”

Dorcas laughed once. “My father didn’t even come today. Nobody did. I told Michael it

was today. I texted Laura.”

“Exactly,” Isaiah said. “Nobody is coming for you. Nobody ever has.”

It landed like a second labour, deeper than the first. She looked at Emily’s hand, the hand that had held hers through every transfusion,

curved around the back of her son’s head.

Her voice came out very quiet. “How long?”

Isaiah frowned. “What?”

“How long have you been sleeping with her?”

Emily laughed. “Since before the engagement.” She tilted her head. “You really never

noticed?”

“Give me my son.”

Dorcas swung her legs off the bed. The room swayed. Her stitches pulled, and she did

not care. She took one step, then another, and caught Emily’s wrist. Emily jerked free

and wiped the spot on her dress, as if Dorcas were dirty.

“Give him to me. Give me my son, you liars—”

“Dorcas, stop.”

“GIVE HIM TO ME!”

Isaiah moved so fast she never saw it coming. His palm cracked across her face. She

spun sideways, her hip hit the bed rail, and the floor rushed up to meet her. Pain burst

behind her eyes.

Somewhere far away, the baby began to cry again. She thought of the lullaby. Someone

has to hum it to him.

The cry faded down the corridor until the monitor’s beeping was all she could hear.

Her fingers slid through something warm on the cold tiles.

Heels clicked away. A door opened.

“Get her out of my sight,” Isaiah said, and he was no longer speaking to her. “And make

sure there’s no record she was ever pregnant.”Then everything went black before she could answer.

Dorcas did not speak in the car.Desmond did not make her. He sat beside her with his phone dark in his hand, and when the driver stopped at a red light he said only, “Dorcas.”“Don’t,” she said. “Not yet.”He didn’t. A few minutes later his phone lit up and he read it without comment. Then, quietly: “David confirms the filing is real.”“The filing is real,” Dorcas said. “The signature isn’t.”The penthouse was on the fortieth floor and looked like no one lived in it. White walls, grey sofas, the whole city laid out below. Desmond opened a door at the end of the hall.“This is yours.”It was a bedroom with its own bathroom and a desk by the window. Her plastic hospital bag looked absurd on the bed.“I need four things,” she said.“Go on.”“A key of my own. Nobody comes into this room without knocking, including you. I want to see anything that has my name on it before it is signed, filed or sent.”“Done.”“And a job.”“You have a position at Allen Corporation. It’s in the

“Take me to Isaiah’s house.”Dorcas said it before the registry doors had finished closing behind them, her phone still in her hand and one word glowing on the screen. No. Under it, a small grey line: Read.“No,” Desmond said.“I wasn’t asking.”“You have been Mrs Allen for four minutes. You haven’t eaten. You have a head injury, and he has just threatened you.”“Then he should see I’m not frightened.” Her eyes were red-rimmed, but dry. “I know where he lives. I can take a taxi. Or you can drive me.”It was not a decision he would have made for a client. He gave the driver the address. In the car she sat with her hands in her lap, turning the gold ring around her finger. He had expected her to talk, or to cry. She did neither.“Which three lawyers did you call?” he asked.“I’ll give David their names tomorrow.”“Someone told Isaiah’s side you meant to fight.”“I know.” She kept her eyes on the road. “That’s why I’m going now.”“My security man will walk you to the door,” h

The hotel room was clean, quiet, and paid for by a man she did not trust.Dorcas sat on the edge of the bed with the contract in her lap and her phone in her hand. She had watched the video three times.Isaiah looked wonderful. That was the worst part. Clean shirt, soft light, red-rimmed eyes. “Dorcas was kind enough to carry our son,” he said to the camera. “But since the birth she has been unwell. What happened at the hospital was a breakdown. I only want to protect my child.”He paused to wipe his eye. It was an excellent performance. She had once loved that face.Eleven thousand views. The comments scrolled past. Poor man. Some women shouldn’t be allowed near babies. Hope she gets help. One comment had two thousand likes: She sold her own baby. What kind of monster. She turned the phone face down. She had called three lawyers that evening. Each call began the same way: My name is Dorcas Starling, and I intend to fight a surrogacy waiver I never signed. Two h

The woman across his desk had not touched the tea.Desmond noticed that before he noticed the bruise, a purple smear along her cheekbone that no amount of hair could hide. She sat very straight, both hands wrapped around the handles of a plastic hospital bag, like someone braced to be thrown out.“Thank you for coming, Miss Starling.”“You said you knew what they did.” Her voice was hoarse. “Prove it.”He almost smiled. “Isaiah’s company carries far more debt than he admits to anyone. Two of his investors are quietly pulling out. Emily has not been admitted to any hospital in two years. Last Thursday she spent the afternoon at a spa.”Dorcas’s knuckles whitened on the plastic. “How do you know that?”“Because I pay people to know things.”“You had me followed?”“I had them followed. You were a footnote.” He let that sit. “I know what they did to you. I also know exactly how little you can do about it alone.”“Why do you care?”“I don’t. I need a wife.”Silence. A

The first thing Dorcas noticed was the ceiling. White, with a brown water stain in one corner. A recovery room, not the delivery suite. The second thing was her stomach. Her hand slid under the blanket. Soft. Hollow. Wrong. She sat up too fast. The room swung, and pain drove a nail behind her left eye. When it cleared she saw the plastic cradle beside the bed, its blanket folded into a neat square.Empty.“No.” Her voice cracked. “No, no—” She hit the call button again and again.A nurse came in, the young one with tired eyes. She did not quite meet Dorcas’s gaze.“Where is my baby?”“Miss Starling, please lie back. You’ve had a head injury—”“I had a baby. I gave birth yesterday. Where is he?”The nurse’s mouth tightened. “I’m not able to discuss that. Someone from administration will speak with you.”“Look at me. Look at my stitches. I did not imagine him.”“I know,” the nurse whispered, so quietly Dorcas almost missed it. Then she straightened and left.Dorcas

The call came in the middle of the quarterly review. Four words from the nurse: “Mr Allen, come now.”Desmond Allen stood up mid-sentence and walked out. Mrs Prudence’s eyebrow lifted. Mr Thompson already had his phone out. Nobody asked why.He reached the private wing of St. Gabriel’s in twenty-two minutes, taking the stairs three at a time, still in his boardroom jacket. The corridor smelled of lilies and bleach. Two men were waiting outside his grandfather’s door, and he knew them both too well.“Desmond.” Mr Chen inclined his head. “We came as soon as we heard.”“You came before I did,” Desmond said.Dominic gave him a sorrowful smile. “Family should be here.”“The family is in that room.”He shut the door on them. The man in the bed had once filled every room he entered. Now he barely dented the pillow. Tubes. A monitor with a slow green line.“You’re late,” his grandfather whispered.“I’m here.” Desmond took the thin hand. It gripped him harder than he expect
