LOGIN~Lindsey~ Neither of them will tell me anything except that I’m needed at the packhouse immediately. I’m silently praying that this means Dad is ok. If he was injured, we would be headed to the hospital. If he was dead, I would have to confirm his body as his next of kin. I try to hope for the best as Logan leisurely makes his way down the road. I stare out the window to pass the time. I haven’t been to this part of the pack before; it’s mostly industrial with a few houses arranged in neighborhoods. We pass a couple of apartment complexes and some office buildings. The little shack on the edge of town looks odd in comparison with the hustle and bustle that’s taking place. Soon, I start to recognize some buildings and road names. The closer we get to the packhouse, the more the butterflies churn in my stomach. When we pull into the driveway, I almost feel ready to hurl. “This way,” Grant says as Logan opens my door. “And Lindsey, I’m sorry about today. I’m still learning too.”
~Lindsey~ I look around at this underground bunker. It looks nothing like the dilapidated structure above us. There’s monitors that show footage from every angle, appliances that look like they’ve never been touched, shelf stable food lining the shelves. Everything you could need for weeks. I rub my arms, trying to comfort myself in yet another strange place. “Where is Brady?” Grant pulls the door closed and makes his way down the ladder quickly. “He’s safe. That’s what matters.” He’s being cryptic and short with me. I appreciate neither. I turn towards Logan, cocking an eyebrow. He sighs. “For your safety as well as his, we aren’t telling you.” “Oh but I’m sure he knows where I am. Right? It’s just that this works one way. In his favor.” I huff and find a couch that I can sit in to ignore the two of them. All I can think about is if Dad is ok. “Lindsey, like it or not, we’re stuck here together. You can get over it, or you can pout the entire time. Your choice.” “I’ll take
~Lindsey~ I get a random text from Dad right before gym class. I’m in the locker room changing into my gym clothes. “I love you kiddo.” I smile, convinced he knows that I’m worried about Brady and Hunter. The two didn’t exactly get along. “I love you too Dad.”“What are you grinning so big about?” Callie comes and crashes beside me. “Also can I just say how great it is that Grant assigned Trey to you full time so I can see my mate and my bestie all the time?” She gushes. I laugh. “It was my dad. He just texted me that he loves me. I think he knows I’m worried about my cousin and my mate.”Deanna walks in, looking like she’s seen a ghost. “Dee? What’s wrong?” She immediately starts crying and crashes into my arms. “Lindsey-“ she sniffles, “it’s our parents.”I look at Callie and then at Deanna. “What do you mean?”“Lindsey!” Grant yells into the locker room. “Get out now!”Callie grabs Deanna, and they follow me out. “Trey, take Callie and Deanna. If he manages to get out, he w
~Brady~ “Well?” Dad urges. John places the clipboard in his elbow and takes a deep breath before continuing. “This is a non-invasive prenatal paternity test. We take a vial of blood from the mother, separate the DNA, and swab the cheek of the father for testing. Confirmation on a second one will take about a week, but, as I said, the lab expedited it under the impression that we were doing this for a neighboring pack.” “John, I’m glad you’re a consummate professional, but can you just tell me if-“ “No. He’s not the father.” Dad and I both sigh in relief. I silently thank the goddess for being merciful. I’m suddenly a fan of abstinence for unmated wolves. “There’s almost a 0% chance. The only way is if they didn’t perform it correctly. I stayed and watching to verify, and all the steps were performed properly. So I can say with almost certainty, no. You are not the father.” John smiles at me. I know he’s happy about the results as well. Lindsey won’t have a mate with a pup
~Brady~I shake my head in confusion. “I’m sorry. I think I misunderstood you.”John sighs and puts a hand on my shoulder. “I know you had a life before we came here. Hell, a month ago you barely knew my daughter existed. I’m not angry. But this might seriously change things.”I feel my knees give out and thankfully land in a chair behind me. “John who is it?”“A girl named Daisy. Said you’re the only one she’s been intimate with.”I shake my head. “No. We didn’t have…” I look up and rub my neck. John is Lindsey’s dad; he’s not just any regular doctor. “Um..”“Son, she’s about 10 weeks along. That’s over two months ago. I’m not trying to get into your business, but I need you to think back. Right now, I’m a doctor, and you’re a patient. No personal things matter. Did you have intercourse with her?”“Yes.” I admit begrudgingly. “And is there a possibly your sperm entered her vaginal area?” I rub my hands down my face. “I always use protection. She said she was on birth control.”Joh
~Brady~So much for alpha duties being over. While Dad reviews what happened in the pack during his absence, I’m left playing the host to Hunter. As the new beta of the White Fang pack, I have to accommodate him during his stay. He’s supposed to be crossing over shortly and will be escorted directly to the hospital where Jagger waits for his brother to be discharged. Blaine is stable and healing. Until he can learn to feed himself, write, and a few other basic skills, he won’t be released. A part of me is glad that Knight tore off his dominant arm. Since he’s been an inconvenience all his life, it’s time he feels inconvenienced. Much to Jagger’s dismay, John ran tests that confirm the two are brothers. Apparently they got written permission while Blaine was unconscious, claiming they needed to check his blood type and some other nonsense. Dad reported the findings to the king since proven infidelity is a serious issue for alphas. The files to review keep flooding in. Dad has me wo
~Brady~ “Well you seem better today.” Colton says as we all meet in my office as we do every morning. “We have good news. Dad and Uncle Dave are coming home, the council conducted their business, and the king is commending our pack on its dedication to justice.” I offer a small smile though I ca
~Lindsey~I clap my hands, almost giddy with excitement. “Brady, please?” I look up at him, batting my eyelashes. “I’ve missed having him around so much. He’s like a brother to me.”“I mean at least I’m asking. I could just get approval to be with my alpha who happens to be in your pack at the mome
~Brady~ I look around but don’t spot Lindsey. I’m thinking he might be right. “Where the hell is my luna?” I say, growing more irritated by the second. They both whip around to look at me. Grant responds. “Um…. About that….” He looks at Colton for backup. Colton’s whole body moves as he sigh
~Brady~“Lindsey doesn’t have a bodyguard. I’m with her until Logan can get down here.” I get a random mindlink from Trey who rarely speaks at all, even to me. I’m out of the office and on Logan’s ass in a second. “Why the hell are you not with her?” I yell, my patience already thin from the repo
