"Did you just growl at the jar again?" Elena’s sleepy voice floated up from her nest of pillows.

Asher glanced guiltily at the offending Nutella jar on the nightstand. "No. That was a... protective snarl."

"A what now?" she laughed, shifting to lie on her side, one hand sliding instinctively to cradle her round belly. "You’re not at war with my cravings, Ash."

"I am when they’re pickles and Nutella, Elena. Together. On the same spoon." He made a face, but his eyes softened as he watched her stretch.

"Don’t judge me. Your children demanded it."

"Traitors, the lot of them," he murmured, leaning down to kiss her forehead. "How do you feel this morning?"

"Like I’m carrying three bowling balls strapped to my spine. But otherwise? Glorious." Her eyes fluttered open, twinkling with mischief. "I had a dream you brought me cake. Red velvet. With pickles baked in."
