It wasn't until the next morning that Kane finally received Arthur's call about the results of his eye exam.

At the time, Kane was in the kitchen making breakfast for Aria. He closed the door before answering the phone.

"All right, Arthur. You can say it now."

"Sir…" Arthur's voice cracked. Ever since the hospital called, his heart had been in turmoil. Now, hearing Kane's calm tone only made it harder to hold himself together.

"Don't get all emotional," Kane said evenly as he turned off the stove and poured soup into a bowl.

"Sir, the doctor confirmed it. Your cornea is damaged. The right eye is in bad shape—if it continues like this, you'll lose your vision soon." Arthur's voice was heavy, like wet fabric weighing him down.

"I see." Kane froze for a split second before his composure returned.

He had already considered this possibility before going to the hospital yesterday. Now that it was confirmed, it wasn't something he couldn't accept.
