Chapter 2: The Woman He Didn’t Warn Me About

The silence that followed her words was suffocating.

“You didn’t tell me you were getting married.”

The woman in red stood there like she owned the room, her posture confident, her lips painted a bold crimson that matched the sharpness in her eyes. She was beautiful in a way that demanded attention—polished, powerful, and completely out of place next to someone like me.

Adrian didn’t look at her immediately.

Instead, his jaw tightened, his gaze flicking briefly toward me before settling back on her.

“This isn’t a discussion for now,” he said coolly.

Her eyes finally landed on me.

“And who is she?” she asked, not bothering to hide the disdain in her tone.

I shifted uncomfortably in my seat, my fingers curling into my palms. I hadn’t expected this. I hadn’t expected her.

Before I could speak, Adrian did.

“My wife.”

The word echoed loudly in my ears.

Her laughter was sharp and humorless. “Your what?”

He stepped closer to her, his presence dominating. “We’re done here, Sophia.”

Sophia.

The way she smiled at him told me everything I needed to know—and nothing at all.

“Done?” she scoffed. “You think you can just replace me with a girl who looks like she wandered in off the street?”

My cheeks burned.

Adrian’s eyes darkened. “Watch your tone.”

She ignored him and turned to me instead. “Do you know who I am?”

I swallowed. “No.”

“I’m the woman he was supposed to marry.”

The words sliced through me.

I felt stupid for the tiny part of my heart that had hoped there was no one else. For believing, even briefly, that this contract was simple.

“That’s not true,” Adrian said flatly.

Sophia smiled bitterly. “Tell her the truth, Adrian. Tell her how long we’ve been together. Tell her why you’re really doing this.”

My chest tightened as I looked at him.

He met my gaze, his expression unreadable. “This marriage is business. Nothing more.”

Sophia’s laughter softened into something sad. “That’s what you said to me once too.”

The air felt heavy, thick with words left unsaid.

“I think it’s time you leave,” Adrian said to her, his voice firm.

She looked at him one last time before turning back to me. “Be careful, sweetheart. Men like him don’t fall in love. They destroy it.”

Then she walked out.

The door closed quietly behind her, but the impact of her presence lingered.

I stood slowly, my legs unsteady. “You didn’t tell me about her.”

“You didn’t ask,” he replied.

“That’s not fair.”

“Fair doesn’t exist in contracts,” he said coldly.

I wrapped my arms around myself. “Am I just… a replacement?”

His eyes flickered. “You’re exactly what I need.”

Not what he wants.

A car ride later, I found myself standing inside a penthouse that looked more like a hotel than a home. Everything was immaculate. Empty.

“This is where you’ll stay,” Adrian said. “Your room is down the hall.”

I nodded, unsure what else to say.

“And Amara,” he added.

I turned.

“This marriage stays private—for now.”

I swallowed hard.

Because I was beginning to understand something terrifying—

I hadn’t just signed a contract.

I had stepped into a war. I didn’t know how to fight.

Clean. Simple.”Aaliyah let out a short, bitter laugh. “Nothing about this has been simple.”The car pulled into the driveway, but she didn’t move to get out. Neither did he.“The clause states that if either party terminates the marriage before the agreed period,” Ethan said slowly, “there’s a

It was elegant but intimate—nothing like the loud, extravagant places Ethan usually entertained business partners.Aaliyah noticed that immediately.“This place is beautiful,” she said as the waiter pulled out her chair.“I thought you’d like it,” Ethan replied, waiting until she was seated before sitting across from her. That simple gesture made her heart stumble. For a moment, they just looked at each other, the space between them unfamiliar without the weight of paperwork, staff, or expectations.“No contracts tonight,” Ethan said quietly. “Just… dinner.”Aaliyah nodded. “Just dinner.”But both of them knew it was more than that.As wine was poured and menus set aside, the tension slowly softened.
