Regret

My Alpha Mate, Damon Ashford, missed our son Finn's sixth birthday—because he was too busy tending to his adopted sister's pup. That night, while packing up Finn's room, I found a recording in his mechanical wolf toy. A tiny, childish whisper. "Little wolf, my daddy's not here. Will you stay and grow up with me instead?" The next day at the pack school, the instructor casually asked why Finn's father hadn't shown up for the ceremony. Finn gripped his crayon and answered softly: "Daddy's busy. He's the pack's Alpha." "His time belongs to his work. It belongs to Aunt Serena, because she needs his care. But it doesn't belong to me." The parents nearby shifted, at a loss for words. But I felt nothing. Just the quiet, final snap of disappointment. A month later, Damon finally remembered. He wanted to make up for the missed birthday. He walked into the pups' room and saw Finn sorting through identity cards. Finn slipped the card with Damon's face into the "Pack Members" slot. Then left the "Family" column completely empty. Damon reached for it, but Finn looked up, eyes distant and cold. "Alpha Ashford. Please don't put the card in the wrong place." "Dad belongs in the family. You only belong to the pack." The color drained from Damon's face. Instantly.

Chapter 1
"Finn. What did you call me?"Finn was sprawled on the carpet, sorting cards. He slid the one with Damon's face into the "Pack Members" slot."Alpha Ashford."Damon's jaw tightened."Look at me."Finn glanced up. Those eyes that used to light up whenever they found his father now only held evasion."Say it again.""Alpha Ashford."Damon turned to me."Elara. Did you tell him to say that? ""No.""You're lying. A six-year-old wouldn't treat his father like this unless someone taught him.""So you do remember you're his father," I said. The room went quiet.Damon's gaze landed on the desk. A wooden box held a single unpolished pack crest. The Moon Rite—the ceremony where a pup turns six and receives his pack identity, placed by both parents.Finn practiced for three months. He memorized the creed, learned the bow, and asked me a dozen times,"Will Daddy be proud of me?"Before the ceremony, he waited by the hall entrance. Every time footsteps echoed, he'd rise on his toes and peer toward

Chapter 2
The next morning, I started packing.Finn didn't ask why.He split his toys into two piles. The wooden bow and the plush toys from my father went into the suitcase. The mechanical wolf from Damon stayed in the cabinet."Don't you like it anymore?""I do.""Then why aren't you taking it?"Finn touched the wolf's ear."It talks like him."I pressed the button. Damon's recorded voice played:"Finnie, wait till Daddy's done..."Finn pulled his hand back."I don't want to hear 'wait' anymore."My throat closed up.My phone buzzed.A video from Serena. In front of the old house fireplace, Damon was fixing Nico's toy. Nico sat on his knee, wearing Damon's Alpha cloak pin around his neck. That was only used when the Alpha brought his successor to formal ceremonies.Serena laughed off-camera.[Nico says as long as Damon's here, bad dreams don't dare come.]Then another message.[Between siblings, there are always places no one else can fill.]I saved the video to the complaint file for the pack

The next afternoon was the pack school's Family Day.Damon actually showed up.He walked in wearing his Alpha ceremonial robe and was immediately surrounded by parents the moment he stepped onto the field."Alpha, my pup was reciting your creed last night.""Thank you for the new training ground you donated to the school."Damon responded to each one, warm and patient.Finn stood under a tree watching him. A tiny, fragile pride crept back into his eyes."Mom, he's here for me today, right?""He said he would."I didn't want to lie to him. But I also didn't dare vouch for Damon. Before the activities started, Serena walked in with Nico. She wore a visitor's badge."Sorry, one extra person." She turned to the instructor. "Nico heard Damon would be here and insisted on coming."The instructor hesitated. "Today's only for enrolled families."Serena's eyes reddened instantly. "He doesn't have a father. He just wanted to feel what it's like to be with one for once..."Damon walked over. "Put

Leaving day. Before dawn, the Northern Passage papers came through. I also submitted my resignation as Luna to the elders.I was ready to take Finn and leave right then. But Finn pulled out a ticket from the cabinet—the Moon Festival Carnival pass Damon had given him long ago. The date on it was today."Mom, can we wait till afternoon?" He pinched the corner of the ticket. "Last time."I looked at him and didn't say no.Eight in the morning, Damon came back. The moonstone pendant was no longer in his hand. He acted like nothing from last night had happened, pulling out three carnival wristbands."Three o'clock. Meet at the entrance."Finn stared at him. "You remembered?""Of course.""Just the three of us?"Damon paused. "Just us."Finn didn't smile. He just put the wristband on.After Damon left, I changed our Northern train tickets to 4:30 pm. The carnival was only ten minutes from Central Station. If he actually showed up, Finn could at least have one real goodbye. At noon, we clear

Damon's POVDamon reached the station eleven minutes after the northbound train had left.He charged through the empty gate and grabbed the attendant by the collar. "Where's the next stop?""Alpha, the train's already crossed the Ashford border.""Stop it."The attendant went pale but shook his head. "That's a Northern exclusive. Without Frost Council's approval, Ashford has no authority to intercept."Damon opened his mouth, then his chest caved in.A raw, hollow ache—the kind that came too late, after the Mate Bond had already severed. He bent over, hand pressed hard against his sternum, like he could force that vanished tether back into his flesh. But there was nothing there. He couldn't feel Elara's location. Couldn't feel her emotions. Even the Mind Link was just dead silence.Cole caught up and steadied him. "Alpha.""Check Elara's travel clearance.""Already did." Cole's voice was low. "Elara reclaimed her Frost membership. Finn follows his mother's lineage. The Northern elders

Damon's POVThe next morning, Serena showed up with Nico. She didn't hand the moonstone to the guards. She walked straight into the Alpha's residence."I heard Elara left." She couldn't quite hide the gleam in her eyes, but her voice stayed soft. "Don't take it too hard. She's just throwing a tantrum. She'll come back once she cools down."Damon sat by the fireplace. He hadn't slept all night."The pendant?"Serena's smile stiffened. "Nico finally slept well last night. Can we keep it a few more days?""It's Finn's.""But Finn's already back in the North." She stepped closer. "He has a mother, a grandfather, and the whole of Frost. Nico only has me—and you, the only one willing to look after him."Damon looked at her. He'd said those words himself, countless times. Finn had more, so it was okay to take from him. Nico cried, so he should get everything first. He used to call that taking — consideration."I'm not his father."Serena went pale.Nico peeked out from behind her. "Mommy said

Damon's POVThe elder inquiry lasted three hours. The main screen at the center of the hall played the school Family Day footage on a loop. Damon pressing his handprint onto Nico's flag. Finn tearing off the space meant for his father. Then the Alpha aura flaring open—a six-year-old standing behind Elara, pale, shoulders shaking. The Head Elder paused the footage."Damon. Are you aware that an Alpha is prohibited from using aura against a minor pup?""Yes.""Are you aware that leaving a handprint on a family flag constitutes public acknowledgment of protection and kinship responsibility?""Yes.""And the cloak pin?""Only for the Alpha and his heir.""Yet you gave it to Nico."Damon lowered his eyes. "Yes."The Elder pulled up the duty log from the Moon Rite night."Your own son waited until the last streetlamp went out. Meanwhile, you were at the old house fixing another pup's toy. Was this an emergency?""No.""Was Nico's life in danger?""No.""Then why did you miss it?"Damon was s

Two years passed. Finn was eight. The Northern wind had toughened him up. He'd learned to shoot the wooden bow and could recite Frost's creed on his own. His grandfather took him to the pup snow race, and he took first place.Crossing the finish line, he didn't scan the crowd for his father. He ran straight to me first."Mom, I got first place."I wiped the snow off his lashes. "I saw."That afternoon, the Alliance Summit ended.I went to the training ground to pick up Finn and saw a familiar figure standing under a pine tree.Damon had lost weight. His formal robe hung looser than before, and a streak of gray had appeared at his temples. When he spotted Finn, his eyes reddened instantly."Finnie."Finn stopped. He looked at Damon for a few seconds, then lowered his head in a proper Northern greeting."Alpha Ashford."Damon's lips trembled. "You still remember me, right?""I do."A flicker of hope lit up his eyes—then Finn added: "We have your portrait in our territory studies class."

Damon told me Serena had left Ashford. Her Alpha family privileges had been revoked, and she was placed under long-term supervision by the Pup Protection Bureau for using Nico to fabricate false distress calls. The council had restored Damon's decision-making authority. He'd restructured the old house protocols and aid rules—no one would be allowed to use pack resources through personal connections again."I changed everything," he said. "Elara, I truly know I was wrong."I listened quietly. "Anything else?"Damon froze. "You don't want to know what happened to Serena?""Not my concern.""But if she hadn't tricked me —"He stopped mid-sentence. Probably realized how ridiculous that sounded even to himself.I finished it for him. "If she hadn't cried, you wouldn't have left us over and over?"Damon went pale. "I'm not trying to shift blame. Elara, every mistake was mine. I just wanted you to know—I've cut her out completely.""She was never the real problem."I looked at him. "She didn'
