Chapter 1

"Her? Some washed-up stray, and she thinks she can compete with Teresa?"

Gritting my teeth through the pain, I tried to make them understand that I'd only come back to collect what my father had left behind. It had nothing to do with Filippo.

That nightmare of a wedding three years ago had burned away every last bit of love I'd ever had for him.

On our wedding day, my ex-husband, Filippo Villa, had been tangled up with Teresa in our bridal suite.

Blinded by rage, I demanded to know how they could betray me like that.

But all Teresa had to say was that she was scared, and Filippo roughly tied me up with rope and shoved me into a closet without a shred of mercy.

He looked me in the eye and coldly tried to talk me down. "Just wait in here for a while. Teresa scares easily. Don't frighten her."

Alone in the dark and terrified, I pounded on the door until my hands were nearly in shreds. It took three days before I finally broke out of that closet, a complete wreck.

But what was waiting for me outside was a flood of slander.

I'd become the shameless tramp who ran off with her lover on her wedding night. Not only had I disgraced my family, I was also the traitor who'd sold out its secrets!

Covered in wounds, I fled Naples.

If I hadn't met Rafael Vitale, the man I love now, and if he hadn't cherished me and stayed by my side, I might never have escaped my past.

I didn't want to explain myself to these people. I took out my phone to call the property management company.

They'd trashed the estate, and I wanted answers.

I hadn't wanted anyone bothering me when I came, so I'd had my driver and bodyguard wait outside.

Now it looked like that might not have been the right call.

Before I could dial, a large hand yanked the phone away from me.

It hit the ground with a sharp crack, and a pair of leather shoes deliberately stomped on it a few times, grinding it to pieces.

Filippo looked at me with arrogance, a hint of fake pity in his smile.

"Isabella, it's been three years, and you still haven't learned your lesson.

"We haven't seen you in ages, so everyone was just having a little fun with you. Quit the act and crawl out on your own."

Three years.

Hearing that voice again still made my heart twinge.

The man at the center of the crowd was tall, his hair neatly combed back to show a smooth forehead.

Compared to three years ago, he had the sharp edge of a man used to being in charge.

Filippo. My ex-husband.

More people recognized me, and all the old gossip about me came up again.

"Wait, that's Isabella? Didn't she run off with some guy on her wedding night?" someone shouted, full of contempt.

I never thought my desperate escape would be twisted into some cheap, shameless betrayal.

Filippo's expression turned a little awkward.

He instinctively avoided my stunned gaze and cleared his throat.

"Even if you've come back now, we're over."

His eyes swept over the hem of my dress, torn by the rose thorns. There wasn't a designer logo on it, and it wasn't from this season's collection, so he decided I'd fallen on hard times.

What he didn't know was that every stitch of this dress had been sewn by a top designer.

The design was one of a kind, too, because the way Rafael adored me was one of a kind.

He gave a soft sigh and offered me advice as if he were tossing a coin to a beggar. "For old times' sake, the best I can do is give you a job as a cleaner. If that's not enough for you, or if you want more, the only thing waiting for you is getting thrown out on the street."

When the others heard his offer, they deliberately splashed their red wine all over me.

The cold alcohol ran into my cuts, and the sharp sting nearly made me scream.

Only by clenching my teeth as hard as I could did I keep from giving them the satisfaction.

"Hey, cleaner, get on your knees and clean up all this wine. Hurry up."

My whole body was shaking. I looked at Filippo in disappointment and warned them all. "Filippo, I don't need your fake charity. Your arrogance and stupidity are going to cost you!"

All I got in return was a sneer. "Isabella, you think you're still some pampered principessa?"

The stubborn boy from a backwater town, the one who'd never fit in because he was poor, had finally been eaten alive by the glitz of high society until he was a stranger.

Once, he'd been the one surrounded, mocked, and bullied.

I was the one who fell for that stubborn poor boy at first sight and used my family's resources to turn him into a famous lawyer.

We used to hold each other late at night, and he swore on his life that he'd be faithful to me and protect me forever.

I was completely lost in that love, right up until Teresa, the only daughter of the Gallo family, became his personal assistant.

The broken glass they'd laid out for me earlier now cut into her face.Hearing her scream, I couldn't help pressing closer to Rafael. His broad hand steadied my waist, and his low voice steadied me."Don't be scared. She's getting what she deserves."Amid Teresa's sobbing, Lorenzo shakily placed the key to the estate, the symbol of its ownership, in my hand."Isabella... No, Mrs. Vitale, we were blind. Please, give us another chance!"To save himself, her father had abandoned Teresa without a moment's hesitation.I looked at the key and finally let out a quiet breath. After three years, I'd finally gotten back everything that was mine.To win my favor, Lorenzo tied Teresa up with rope himself and made her kneel at my feet.Teresa groveled at my feet like a madwoman, begging for mercy."I'm sorry! It's all my fault! Isabella, please, let me go!"Filippo had gone completely limp, too, and crawled over to me like a dog."Isabella, this is all her fault! That bitch seduced me.

"I'm sorry, Don Vitale! It's all my fault. I'm begging you, spare the rest of the Gallo family!"Rafael didn't even look at him. Instead, he gently set me down."Once I've dealt with them, I'll take you home and get you treated."I nodded, and he slipped off his suit jacket and draped it over me.Only then did Lorenzo recognize me, his eyes full of guilt. After I left, he'd seized the chance to swallow up everything my family owned, including this estate. He was also the one who'd ordered every company not to hire me, driving me out of Naples for good.Teresa looked at me uneasily, still refusing to accept reality. She screamed hysterically, clutching her father's hand."Father, look closely! This woman is Isabella, the bitch I drove out of Naples!"The next moment, Lorenzo leaped up and kicked her in the shin."You damn idiot! You're going to get our whole family killed!"Then he immediately crawled forward on his knees, trying to grab the hem of Rafael's pants, his voice

Cold gun barrels were trained on anyone who tried to slip away. Only then did they realize how much danger they were in.Teresa panicked for a second, but then Filippo stepped up and planted himself in front of her.He frowned at me, then at Rafael, and suddenly scoffed."Isabella, even if you still can't get over me, you shouldn't have hired a whole crew of actors to cause a scene."He deliberately lowered his voice, trying to intimidate Rafael and me. "Don't forget, the Gallo family runs this place now. Even the new Don of Sicily himself is coming to our wedding."He swept a scornful glance over the bodyguards and spoke with feigned generosity. "If you have them apologize right now, I'll let them go. As for you, Isabella, I'm very angry about this little stunt of yours, so you'll have to stay behind and clean up the mess."As for this man..." Filippo looked at Rafael with contempt. "If he were really the big shot from Sicily, he'd never have anything to do with you. Lorenzo, Te

The people around us gaped in shock.Rafael's chiseled face showed no expression at all, yet the pressure he gave off was suffocating.Whoever his gaze landed on instinctively lowered their head, trembling uncontrollably. The cuts from the broken glass sent a sharp pain through me at the slightest movement. The familiar scent of agave filled my nose, and my eyes instantly welled up.He'd come!He held me in his arms like I was the most precious treasure in the world.Leaning against his solid, warm chest, I couldn't hold back my tears anymore. They fell one after another."I'm sorry, baby. I got here too late."His low voice was as rich as a double bass, and the tenderness and heartache in it only made me cry harder."They... They destroyed my estate. They destroyed Mama's roses..."I cried until I could barely make a sound. Only in his arms could I let out everything I'd been forced to swallow.Rafael reached out and gently wiped away my tears. He kissed my forehead softl

Everyone instinctively backed away from me. Only Teresa's face darkened as she looked up, glaring at the bodyguard who'd dared to get in her way."Who the hell do you think you are? How dare you hit my people!"Then, as if she'd figured something out, her red lips curled into a nasty little smile. Her gaze moved from the bodyguard to me."Oh, I get it. Don't tell me he's the man you latched onto?"She raised her chin haughtily and ran her fingers over the diamond necklace at her throat, showing it off."He's just some broke bodyguard. I could make him kneel in front of me and be my dog right now!"I swallowed the taste of blood in my mouth. Teresa's arrogance was laughable.Kneel to her? That was Enzo Moretti, the Vitale family's attack dog. Every family in Sicily dropped to its knees to pledge loyalty the moment it saw him.Her arrogance was going to bring ruin down on the whole Gallo family!Filippo, who'd coldly watched me being tormented the entire time, chose that momen

I collapsed to the ground again, and Teresa ordered her bodyguards to pin down my arms and legs.Shrieking, she stomped all over me with her sharp heels. Every blow felt like a steel spike being driven into my flesh.I couldn't stop screaming from the pain, so she had someone cover my mouth."You shameless bitch!"You knew Filippo never even liked you, and you still forced him to be with you!"Today's our engagement party, and you're trying to steal him again? I won't let you get away with this!"The guests around us just watched coldly, listing off my supposed crimes."Isabella's really lost it! She actually dared to crash Teresa's engagement party.""Teresa, teach this bitch a lesson she won't forget. Show her how things work in Naples!"With everyone backing her, Teresa's bright red lips curved into a smile. She lifted her chin and announced triumphantly, "Everyone, I've thought of a fun game!"A homewrecking bitch should crawl across a scarlet carpet and then beg her vic
