Chapter 1

Three seconds after I sent the message, a reply came back with a question mark.

"Who is this?"

I clipped ten seconds from the old video of my bullying and sent that instead.

In the clip, two guys had me pinned against a bathroom stall door.

Bryce Calloway was holding a mop bucket they'd filled with urine, laughing so hard he couldn't stand up straight.

A second later, murky yellow water poured down over my head.

"Isn't the genius supposed to be a neat freak? Let's give him a wash."

I didn't watch the rest.

Three minutes later, she called.

Her voice was tight.

"Is this real?"

"It's real."

"Do you have anything else?"

"Group-chat logs, hospital records, photos of the clothes they cut up. I have all of it."

The line went quiet for a few seconds.

"Then why don't you report him yourself?"

I looked at my laptop.

On the screen, there was the final hiring list for state government positions.

I'd landed a government job too.

But from the day I applied to the day I interviewed, I hadn't told a soul.

Not my mom. Not even Olivia Kent, my girlfriend and childhood sweetheart.

It wasn't because I wanted to surprise anyone.

It was because I knew better than anyone that you don't announce something until it's set in stone.

Especially now, when I was still in my own final review period.

Six years ago, after I got cornered in that bathroom, my first instinct was to go to a teacher and to my family.

But my homeroom teacher told me to think about the big picture with college applications coming up, and my mom told me not to ruin another kid's future.

Later, the video went around the whole school, and I missed two weeks of classes.

All they ever told me was, "Just put up with it. It'll blow over."

That was when I finally understood.

Counting on other people would get me nowhere. The most important thing was to protect myself first.

So this time, I wasn't going to go after Bryce myself.

Someone else was better suited for it.

"Sabrina Holt, right? You placed eleventh. Bryce's position is only hiring ten people. If he's disqualified during the final review, the next person in line gets moved up. That's you."

Her breathing grew heavy on the other end.

This time, she didn't hesitate.

"Send me all the evidence. I'm filing a complaint under my own name."

I zipped up the folder I'd kept for six years and sent it.

The moment it went through, Mom pushed my door open.

"What are you still sitting around for? Bryce is celebrating his new government job at the hotel tonight. Hurry up and get ready. You're coming with me."

She caught sight of my laptop and frowned impatiently.

"Always messing around with useless stuff. Why can't you just find a real job?"

I closed the laptop.

She had no idea.

The good-for-nothing son she kept complaining about had just landed a government job too.

And he'd placed first on both the written exam and the interview.

But I had no plans to tell her.

Not until the review period was over, anyway.

Six years ago, just to save face, she'd brushed off what happened to me as kids horsing around.

Six years later, just to show off, she'd send my job title, my scores, and my agency to every relative in every family group chat.

I'd already paid the price once for not knowing how to protect myself.

I wasn't going to pay it again.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Olivia.

"Did you get the shoes?"

I froze for a second.

Sure enough, there was a package by the door.

In three years, it was the first gift she'd ever given me.

I was about to try them on when another message popped up.

"I put the wrong address. They were supposed to go to the hotel. They're Bryce's congratulations gift. You're coming anyway, so bring them for me."

I stared at the designer dress shoes in my arms, and suddenly it all seemed a little funny.

Outside my room, Mom was still nagging.

"Hurry up! Don't keep Bryce waiting!"

At the same time, a message came in from Sabrina.

"I've organized everything. I'm filing the complaint tonight."

I clenched my fist.

"Sure. I'll deliver his celebration gift myself."

Whether he'd ever get the chance to wear it was another story.

  • The Eleventh Candidate   Chapter 10

A month later, Sabrina's certification into the vacancy went through. On her first official day, she sent me a photo of her employee badge."Thank you."I replied, "You earned this yourself."I heard about what happened to Bryce afterward from our old high-school classmates. His appointment was permanently withdrawn.A job he'd already lined up fell through too, once word got out that his dad was under investigation.Everyone who used to hover around the Calloways scattered. After Raymond was removed from office, he chewed Bryce out in front of the whole family."I wasted my whole life cleaning up your messes!"The most ironic part was Olivia. She used to fawn over Raymond every chance she got, but the moment the Calloways got into trouble, she ran faster than anyone.Bryce went to her workplace to confront her, and the two of them had a fight in the parking lot that everyone heard about. In tears, he asked her, "Didn't you say you were going to marry me?"All Olivia said

Bryce's essay quickly spread online and kept gaining traction. Some people took his side."Holding a grudge over high-school horseplay for six years?""He already got his own job and still had to drag someone else down. That's pretty ruthless."Others came to my account to attack me."Taking revenge on a romantic rival over a woman. Disgusting.""Seriously, don't you know how hard it is to land a government job? Live and let live!"I didn't reply. I just saved the screenshots.Half an hour later, Sabrina posted a public statement under her full name. She shared only three things.First, our entire chat history. From the moment I handed her the evidence to when she decided to file the complaint herself, not a single word was left out.Second, the date her complaint was received. It was before I found out Olivia was cheating.Third, the full recording of Bryce offering her ten thousand dollars to withdraw the complaint, and threatening her.The comment section went silent.

  • The Eleventh Candidate   Chapter 8

The recording kept going.Sabrina said, "I don't want your money."Bryce's voice instantly turned cold."Think carefully. Even if you get in as a replacement, you'll just be a rookie. My dad knows more people than you can imagine. If you really want to burn every bridge, you'll have plenty of chances to regret it."The recording ended. The room was so quiet you could've heard a pin drop.Bryce's face was ashen."It's fake! She edited it!"Sabrina handed her phone straight over."The original file is right here, with the time and location. I made a backup too."The staff member didn't argue with Bryce. He just told him to stay behind and cooperate with further verification. When I walked out of the building, Olivia was somehow still at the entrance. She was holding a pair of designer dress shoes. The moment she saw me, she hurried over."Luke. I've been waiting for you for two hours."I looked at the shoes and suddenly remembered a few days ago, when she'd asked me, "Did

At two in the afternoon, I went back to the agency.Bryce was already sitting in the interview room.Several printed chat screenshots lay on the table. When he saw me, a flash of smugness crossed his eyes. The staff member slid the documents in front of me."It has been brought to our attention that while your offer was pending, you acted on a personal grudge and actively instigated rejected candidates to file complaints against a competitor. There's also a report that you secretly recorded someone's private life and used it to threaten them."I looked down. The screenshots were real. But they'd been cropped. All that was left was one line of mine: "If he's disqualified, you're number ten."Everything before and after it was gone. The hotel picture had been cropped too, showing only me standing in the doorway, holding up my phone.Bryce's eyes were red."I admit we had problems in high school. But to get revenge on me, he went to the eleventh-place candidate and set up the

  • The Eleventh Candidate   Chapter 6

Bryce stared at my phone as if he'd figured something out."The eleventh-place candidate?"I didn't confirm it, but I didn't deny it either. He lost it."You gave her the evidence, didn't you? Luke, you already got in yourself! Why'd you have to ruin my shot?"I almost laughed out loud."Did I make you corner me in a bathroom, dump filth on me, and film it? Because that's what ruined your shot."His face went red, then pale.Right then, Mom grabbed my arm."Luke, let it go. We're all from the same town. Don't blow this up and ruin someone's future!"Those words again.Six years ago, it was "let it go."Six years later, it was still "let it go."She lowered her voice."You passed anyway. You even came in first. And you're not taking Bryce's position. Can't you just tell them that what happened back then wasn't that serious, so he can keep his job?"I looked at her, my gaze turning cold."Mom! So as long as I'm the one getting hurt, everything can just be let go?"Her li

The staff member opened the file."After review, the evidence in the complaint has been verified. During high school, Bryce Calloway repeatedly bullied a classmate, secretly filmed it, and distributed the videos."Bryce's face slowly drained of color."So what?""Upon review, we have decided to rescind your job offer. You no longer need to report for onboarding."Everything went quiet.Olivia, who'd been blocking my way only moments ago, dropped one of the documents in her hands with a smack.Mom blurted out, "That's impossible!"She rushed over."Sir, there must be some mistake! Bryce never got disciplined in high school. The school even confirmed it was just a conflict between students!"The staff member frowned."No disciplinary record doesn't mean it didn't happen. And our review found that the statements provided by the school and some of the people involved clearly contradict the original evidence."Mom's face went rigid. After all, the statement saying there'd been
