Rory's POV

The first thing I noticed was her smile.

It was bright, playful, almost too wide for the shadows we were living in.

“Wow, you look like you’ve been carrying a storm cloud around all day,” Maya said as I dropped onto the dorm bed. “What happened? Did a professor glare at you too hard? Or” she smirked, lowering her voice“is this about the brooding one with the haunted eyes?”

I shot her a look, but my heart jumped. She didn’t know how close she was.

“You’re ridiculous,” I muttered.

“And you’re avoiding the question,” she shot back, curling up with her knees tucked under her chin. Her amber eyes glowed mischievously in the lamplight. “Come on, Rory. I’m your roommate. Spill. Or I’ll just assume you’ve been sneaking kisses behind the library shelves.”
