After our little intimate time together, I creeped out of the room holding unto his hands like they were all I had.
The game had only gone half before we left and he was back to continue now.
I was still wondering how his wounds healed so quickly or maybe it's part of the many things I'm still to discover.
**************************************
My legs still felt like jelly by the time we stepped outside the arena. The match had been a warzone. Hockey, I’d thought, was brutal enough. But this? This had claws behind every blade, fangs behind every cheer. Kael had played like a beast barely contained inside a man's shape.
The air was icy, but his presence next to me felt warmer than fire. We didn’t speak for a while. Was his eyes were telling me a lot. The match was over. We’d won. But the real game, the one I know she'll come back, but I don't know when.
Kael led us toward the training complex tucked behind the main arena. His jaw was tight, fists clenched at his sides.
“You okay?” I asked finally.
He winked and smirked and it sent sparks in my body “I should be asking you that.”
“I’m not the one who tried to rip someone’s throat out during the third quarter,” I said.
He chucked. “I didn’t rip anything. Technically.”
We reached the training doors, and Kael paused, glancing sideways. His voice dropped an octave. “You shouldn’t have had to see that. Any of it.”
“But I did. And I stayed.”
He opened the door for me, holding it with a subtle nod.
Inside, the lights were dimmed low. The scent of sweat, leather, and faint antiseptic clung to the air. The hum of the heating system was the only sound until a figure stepped out from the hallway to our left.
Tall, lean, with silver-streaked dark hair and amber eyes that felt too sharp, too knowing.
Kael’s posture straightened slightly. “Lucien.”
The man smiled slowly and sauntered forward. "I was wondering when you two would come back from your victory stroll."
Kael turned to me. “Sasha, this is Lucien. My Beta.”
Lucien stopped in front of me and offered a hand, his gaze cutting straight through me like a blade wrapped in silk. “So, you're the mysterious new physiotherapist everyone keeps whispering about. The one who somehow calmed our Alpha mid-rage on the ice.” he smirked.
I hesitated before taking his hand. It was warm. Too warm. Like touching a flame that hadn’t quite gone out.
“I’m Sasha,” I said, my voice smaller than I intended.
Lucien’s smile widened. “I know.”
Kael stepped subtly between us, holding me by the waist. Protective I guess. “Lucien was just leaving.”
Lucien’s brows lifted. “Was I?”
“Now you are,” Kael said sharply.
But Lucien didn’t move. His gaze found mine again. “You know, Kael’s been different since you got here. Lighter. But also... unsteady. It's fascinating. Almost like his wolf doesn’t know what to make of you.”
“I’m sure that’s none of your concern,” I said carefully.
Lucien laughed. “Everything is my concern, Sasha. Especially when a stranger steps into our den and starts waking sleeping thi......”
“Oh, I don’t think,” Lucien continued. “I smell. I feel. You’re not just anyone, sweetheart. There’s power sleeping under your skin. Real power. The kind that makes old wolves nervous.”
Kael’s voice turned deadly. “Lucien......”
" Haven't you seen her mark” Kael said sounding furious.
Lucien raised his hands in mock surrender. “ Ohhhh she's our Luna ..... Interesting. Fine. I’ll play nice. For now.”
He turned to me one last time. “But you should ask Kael why your scent stirred the ancient markings in the East Hall. It’s been dormant for decades. Until you.”
With that, he vanished into the hallway, leaving silence and tension like broken glass in his wake.
I looked at Kael. “What did he mean by that? What markings?”
Kael’s jaw ticked. “Lucien likes to stir trouble.” He said closing the gap between us and laying a soft kiss on my lips.
I smiled but responded “That’s not an answer.”
“The markings he’s referring to are runes. Old ones. Connected to the Moon. They haven’t responded to anyone since… Don't bother anyways" he said holding my hands. I'll be in my room. He winked and turned to leave.
“Since who?”
He faced me again. “Since Selene.”
The name hit something in my chest like a bruise I didn’t remember getting. “That voice. In my head. She called herself a goddess. Said you were hers. That I’m a mistake.”
Kael went still. “She spoke to you?”
“Yes.” I swallowed. “Twice now. First after the match, then again just now. She’s… angry.”
His fists clenched. “Of course she is. She doesn’t like losing control.”
“Who is she to you?” I asked.
He looked up slowly, pain flickering through his eyes. “She was my first mate. She forced our bond. But... I rejected her. And she’s never forgiven me nor does she want to let go.”
I stumbled back a step. “So she wants to break whatever this is between us?”
“She’ll try. Especially if she realizes you’re waking.”
“Waking?”
Kael exhaled heavily. “Your wolf, Sasha. It’s stirring. That’s what she smells. What Lucien sees. You're not human. Not fully.”
I wrapped my arms around myself. “You knew. You knew and you didn’t tell me.”
“I was trying to protect you.”
“From what?”
“From her.”
The silence stretched. Then, softly, I asked, “And who’s protecting me from you?”
Kael’s eyes darkened, his voice barely audible. “Me? No one. You don’t need protection from me. Just trust. And time.”
But time, I feared, was something we were already running out of.
I could hear something somewhere, far beyond the rink, the snow whispered in a voice I could now almost understand:
“The bond must break. The mate is mine.”
**Kael’s POV**We walked deeper into the palace, Tony and Marcus were right behind us until I stopped and turned on them.“Stay here,” I said, keeping my tone calm but firm.Tony frowned immediately. “Like hell we are. We’re not letting you walk off with him alone.”Lucien didn’t react. He just stood there silently, his hands behind his back while his eyes on the ground.I shook my head. “I need you both guarding the exit. If anything happens, I want backup ready. Don’t argue with me.”Marcus stepped forward slightly. “Kael, we can’t trust him. You saw his face back there… he’s hiding something I’m sure of it.”“I know,” I said, lowering my voice. “That’s why I’m going with him. If he’s lying, I’ll handle it myself. You two won’t be caught in it.”Tony’s jaw shifted. “Twenty minutes. If you’re not back by then, we’re coming in. I don’t care what’s waiting inside.”I gave him a nod. “Fair enough.”They both hesitated before backing off. I turned and started walking again. Lucien foll
**Kael **** An unknown Palace Gates**The SUV stopped on the gravel road, with dust rising around us. The forest could show us a palace with guards walking up and down. I was confused for a moment, asking myself why Sasha would be brought to such a place. Marcus spoke with a low tune. “This doesn’t look like your regular rogue hideout, Alpha.”“Yeah,” I muttered, gripping the handle of my door. “Because it isn’t.”I stepped out, catching her scent immediately….Sasha.My chest tightened immediately. “She’s here.”Tony walked up beside me, sniffing the air too. “You’re sure?”“Positive,” I said without hesitation. “I’d know her scent anywhere.”The other wolves spread out behind us, their weapons ready and eyes scanning. I motioned for them to stay low. The gates were guarded by at least six men, all dressed in dark armor. Rogues, by the scent. But something about them felt… organized. Not like the usual scattered kind.“Since when do rogues take orders from an alpha?” Marcus muttered
**Kael ****The Mansion**I was pacing again. The room was dark except for the moonlight coming through the wide windows of my room. I hadn’t slept in days. Every moment without her felt like I was slowly suffocating. My wolf was on edge, snapping at the surface, demanding to be let out…to *find her*.But there was nothing. No communication through our bond, No trace.Just... silence.“Damn it,” I growled and slammed my fist against the wall, leaving a deep dent in the plaster. I didn’t even care. Just then the door opened.“Alpha,” Kiara’s voice came, sounding urgent and breathless. “We’ve got something.”My heart stopped. I turned toward her so fast I nearly tripped over the overturned chair beside me.“What did you just say?”“The investigating wolves,” she said, walking in quickly. “They picked up something. A trail. they found signs. A blood scent... It’s Sasha’s.”I didn’t wait to hear the rest. I pushed past her, almost knocking her into the doorframe.“Where are they?” I sho
** Sasha **** The palace cell**I don’t know how long I lay there after Lucien and Vera left. Minutes? Hours? Time didn’t move right in this place…. All I could feel was pain and all I could see was darkness and my blood laced around my body.I couldn’t stop shaking. My back ached like someone had set fire to it, and every breath went through my throat like glass. My lip was split, my body was broken, and my baby…*Creator, please.* Let my baby be safe.I turned my head toward the wall, trying to swallow back the sobs. But they came anyway. Then I heard a familiar voice. Soft and gentle.“Child…”I blinked, lifting my head just a little. The sound had come from the old lady’s cell.“Are you alright?” the woman asked.I could see her through the glowing rods that separated our cell.“I….I don’t know,” I whispered. “I’m in so much pain. I can’t even tell if the baby’s okay.”There was a pause. Then, “Come closer, my dear. Let me hold your hand.” She said calmly.I crawled slowly to th
**Sasha ****The Cell **My back was still sore from the last whipping, and my arms felt like they were way too heavy for my body. I kept my eyes low, breathing slowly, and pretending I didn’t hear the footsteps forthcoming when i clearly did.“Lucien!!” I gasped. I slowly lifted my head more. The bastard. Standing next to the masked man like he was a rougue. Like he was one of them. ahhhh that sucks. My mouth felt dry, but I forced the words out."You were helping them?" I whispered as they stepped closer. Lucien didn’t answer me. He just looked at me, like he had nothing to feel guilty about.I pushed myself back until my spine hit the wall. My legs were shaking, but I stayed upright. The Masked Alpha stepped forward. His face was still hidden behind that silver mask, his voice was deep and extremely terrifying. “You’ll see soon what I want from you, Sasha. It’s only a matter of time.” His voice came right through his mask. It’ll be impossible to read his emotions right through
**FLASHBACK **** TWO WEEKS AGO**** Sasha **My wrists were sore from the rope, my hair soaked with sweat, and the cell smelled like blood.I sat on the floor of the cold stone cell, with my back against the wall, breathing slowly. The door opened and two men stepped inside. One of them wore a hood, the other a silver mask. The hooded one carried a clipboard and dropped it in front of me.“Write,” he said.I didn’t move. I simply stared at the paper, confused on what I should do.“No.”He stepped forward, kneeling beside me like we were about to have a polite conversation but guess I was wrong. You’re going to write the letter. You’re going to say you left on your own. That you don’t want them looking for you. That Kael should move on.”My throat was dry. “I won’t lie to him.”He shrugged. “You will. Or I’ll bring in someone else for the next round of fun. We’ve got a girl from the Ice lord packs, young, sweet and would know how to suck our damn dick.” He said giving me a mischievou
