Chapter 12 : She’s the same mask Girl

“Miss Elena!” Nathaniel called out with a laugh, stepping out from his hiding spot. He looked around, expecting to see her nearby. But there was no sign of her.

“Dad!!” he shouted instead, spotting Mr. Hughston standing stiffly near the large window.

Mr. Hughston’s stormy expression softened the moment he heard his son's voice. He turned around.

“Hello, kiddo,” he said, trying to sound normal.

Nathaniel frowned a little. “Where’s Miss Elena?”

Mr. Hughston didn’t respond as he stared ahead instead.

“Dad?” Nathaniel called again, louder this time.

“She’s fired,” Mr. Hughston said flatly.

“Huh?” Nathaniel blinked in confusion.

“There will be a new nanny starting tomorrow,” he added, already moving toward the stairs.

“But Dad… I like her,” Nathaniel said, his voice quiet, almost hurt.

Before Mr. Hughson could reply, his phone buzzed.

“Hello?” he answered curtly.

“Mr. Hughston”, came Mr. Thomas’s voice from the other end, calm but urgent. “We found something... You’ll want to see this.”

Mr. Hughson’s jaw clenched slightly. He ended the call and turned to Nathaniel. “Come with me.”

Without hesitation, Nathaniel grabbed his jacket and followed.

They stepped outside and into a Ferrari Purosangue, the engine humming to life with a low growl. The gates opened and in seconds, the car sped off down the driveway......

..............

The door bursts open as Mr. Hughston storms in, sharp, focused.

“Where is it?” he demanded, walking straight to Mr. Thomas, who stood beside a large screen.

Mr. Thomas didn’t waste time. “A video of the masked woman was sent to me this morning.”

Mr. Hughston frowned. “Good! Let me see”

“It’s not just the mask,” Mr. Thomas cut in, his voice serious. “Someone had a video of her... before she wore it that night".

He tapped a button.

The screen lit up.

First, a grainy video played of a woman’s back as she swayed to music, her dress elegant, her posture graceful.

Then she turned.

Mr. Hughston leaned in, his breath caught.

Red lipstick. Hair tied up in a soft bun. A radiant smile.

It was Elena... laughing, carefree and dancing.

Then another video flicked on. The same woman, in her fitted black dress, a shimmering gold mask covering her face. She held a shot glass, muttered something under her breath “Drink to die,” and downed it all in one throw.

Mr. Hughston stepped back slightly, his eyes wide. A gasp escaped him.

Mr. Thomas looked over. “So this... is the woman.”

There was a beat of silence.

“What’s left now,” Mr. Thomas said quietly, “is finding out where she is”...

..........

Mr. Hughson gripped the wheel tightly, jaw clenched as the car sped down the road. He pressed the Bluetooth button on the dash, the line ringing once… twice…

“Yes, sir?” Mr. Chris answered quickly.

“Send me Elena Rivera’s address,” Damien snapped, his voice sharp, no room for questions.

There was a pause.

“Sir… I have them at the office, but I haven’t processed them yet. They’re at the office,” Mr. Chris said carefully.

Damien’s brows furrowed. “Then go there. Now.”

“Right away, sir.”

Mr. Hughston ended the call and sped faster, frustration boiling under his skin...

............................

Chris was already digging through a drawer when the door burst open and Mr Hughston stormed in.

“Did you find it?”

Chris held up a folder. “Yes, sir. It’s here.”

He handed over the file, and Damien scanned the paper quickly. An address of a small town on the other side of the city

“I’ll take it from here,” Damien muttered.

.........…

Already in the town… Damien stood in front of the door, knocking again, a bit harder this time. But still nothing... He pressed his ear to the door, listening for even the smallest sound.

He stepped back, exhaling sharply, pacing the narrow hallway outside her apartment like a man on the edge. He checked the address again... he wasn’t wrong.

This was the place. Still, the way no sign of anyone coming through that door.

Back outside, he leaned against his car, eyes scanning the building like she might magically appear in the window.

Time dragged. One hour. Then two. Then three.

The sun dipped lower, shadows crawling across the pavement. He sat on the low brick wall beside the building, head tilted back, closing his eyes for a moment but not to rest..

Still no sign of her. Damien’s jaw clenched. His heartbeat echoed in the still air. Every passing minute felt like punishment..

Knock knock knock!

A sharp rap on the window startled him. Damien shot to his feet and turned quickly.

An old woman, maybe in her eighties, was standing at the edge of the walkway, squinting at him suspiciously.

“This isn’t a parking area,” she said firmly, pointing at his car.

Damien stepped forward as he brushed his palms on his trousers. “I’m sorry, ma’am. I didn’t realize. I’m just... I was trying to find someone. Do you know if anyone’s home in that apartment?” he asked, nodding toward the door upstairs.

The woman looked at the door, then back at him.

“They’re working people,” she said matter-of-factually. “They don’t show up until the weekend.”

Damien’s jaw tightened, disappointment sinking into his expression.

“Are you sure?” he asked, his voice quieter now.

She gave a sharp nod. “Why would I lie? I’m at my dying age, son. I’ve got no reason to make things up.”

She leaned slightly on her cane and added, “I live just next door. I know when anyone comes or goes. And none of them are around here right now, and that’s on period.”

Damien let out a slow breath, glancing once more at the quiet door. “I’m so sorry,” he said softly.

“You don’t have to be sorry,” the woman replied, waving a hand. “You just looked like you needed to hear the truth.”

He nodded. “Thank you. I should be going.”

“Please,” she said, her tone softening…“don’t waste your time here’’…

Damien gave her a small, grateful nod before turning to leave.

  • The Nanny Affair   My appreciation to you, dear reader.

Thank you for taking this journey with me for every page you turned, every emotion you felt and every moment you shared with these characters. What started as a small idea soon became something bigger, the characters took control and I found myself wanting to give each of them the best story they truly deserved. They loved, cried and grew right before my eyes… and now, they belong to you too. Thank you for reading, for feeling and for believing in their journey. I hope you find your own “happily ever after,” and that you never stop believing in love, hope and second chances. If you haven’t read my other stories yet, I invite you to explore them as well. Each one has its own unique path, its own lessons, and its own magic. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for your love and support. I can’t wait to meet you again in the next story. With love, signing out…Ms Hel

  • The Nanny Affair   Chapter 63 : Honeymoon until the very End

They had already been at the valley for almost seven hours now, freshened up and full from their long day of exploring…..After touring around and soaking in the calm of the evening, they ended up in the jacuzzi with warm bubbles rising around them as the night breeze swept softly over the water and onto their skin… Elena leaned back with a relaxed sigh, her eyes half-closed as she rested her head against Damien’s shoulder. Just as the evening settled into quiet comfort, Damien’s phone began to ring. Elena stretched out her soapy hand to grab it since it was resting beside her. “Here,” she said, handing it to him. The screen lit up with a video call, and Mr Chris’s face suddenly filled the frame. “Mr. Hughson!” he blurted out, talking fast even before Damien’s face appeared. “I was at your office, and I haven’t seen you. Hope all is well, sir.” His tone was serious as he peered straight into the camera… When Damien’s face finally came into view, Mr Chris's eyes widened. “Oh! You'r

  • The Nanny Affair   Chapter 62 : Proposal and Wedding

Elena had just gotten off the phone with Mr Hughston, who had been away in Sweden for the past two weeks on work. She quickly got up from the bed and hurried to freshen up for the girls’ dinner with her old university friends.Sienna had already left earlier, saying she needed to make sure the venue was set up as planned. Elena was annoyed that she’d gone without her and now felt a bit reluctant to get ready at all…She picked up her already pressed, flowy, floor-length dress in a soft ivory shade, the one she and Sienna had bought together a week ago for the reunion dinner. They both knew everyone would be dressing to impress, so they hadn’t held back either. Elena’s dress had clean, graceful lines with subtle lace detailing around the neckline and a delicate scalloped edge that added a soft, whimsical touch.Slipping the dress on, it hugged her curves perfectly at the waist, falling beautifully down her legs. Elena smiled faintly at her reflection, then sat in front of the mirror to

  • The Nanny Affair   Chapter 61 : To the rescue…..

Just like he had promised, he was already at the house knocking on the door. He stood there calm and patient waiting for it to open. On the third knock the door finally opened and it was Sienna who stepped out. She looked a bit startled to see him, flustered and caught off guard. “Mr… Mr Hughston,” she stammered, feeling shy to even meet his eyes…It was her first time seeing the most talked about man in person….Damien gave a small nod and greeted softly, “Hello.” Then without wasting a second, he asked, “Can I see Miss Elena?”.. After Sienna told him she hadn’t heard from Elena either and had been worriedly trying to reach her for a week now, Damien’s own worry grew heavier. The only thing left for him to do now was wait….just wait for a call, a message, anything from her.Walking through the hall of his apartment, Damien’s entire focus was on his phone when Nathaniel came rushing over after exploring his father’s new apartment.“Dad,” he muttered softly, pulling Damien out of his

Victoria’s hands dropped instantly, her body freezing in place. She turned sharply toward the voice only to see her son standing at the gate, staring dead at her.For a moment, neither of them moved. The silence felt heavier than the air itself. Victoria’s eyes widened as if she had just seen a ghost and she took a deep, shaky breath, trying to steady herself and used her trembling hands to brush her gown as if to fix it.“Nathaniel…I…..I thought you were asleep….ohhhhh” she said trying to brush off what had just happened, pretending he hadn't seen anything at all…"I saw everything, Mum…" Nathaniel muttered sharply and pulled away before she could touch him… Ray had already quickly slipped out before Victoria could gather some words…“You’re cheating on Dad too…..with him…”Nathaniel muttered, his eyes burned into hers, filled with the kind of disappointment that made Victoria’s stomach twist. For a second, she couldn't look back at him and she slowly turned away, not facing him and

  • The Nanny Affair   Chapter 59 : Caught in the act...

Elena moved around the room, desperately searching for a way out after hearing her phone ringing downstairs countless times since yesterday. Ray hadn’t returned since he left that morning, and she knew this was one of her few chances to escape before he came back. She rushed to the door and twisted the knob again, but it wouldn’t budge. She threw her shoulder against the wooden frame, trying harder this time.Feeling frustrated, she pressed her forehead against the door and let out a shaky sigh. “Come on…” she whispered under her breath, hitting the door lightly with her fist.Just then, the sound of a car pulling into the driveway made her freeze. Her heart jumped to her throat. She ran to the window, peeking through the curtains to see who it was…praying it wasn’t him but it was him…He stepped out of the car, slamming the door shut, smiling as someone else stepped out. Elena straightened immediately, squinting to see who it was.At first, she couldn’t make out the face since the p

A few days later, even as the chaos still hung in the air, Damien drove to the house. It was the day after Nathaniel’s birthday, and he couldn’t take it anymore.
