Chapter 4

مؤلف: Dastardly Duo
Two days before the wedding, I was writing patient records at the nurses' station when I heard the sound of high heels from the other end of the hallway, clicking loudly against the floor.

It was Stacy.

She was wearing a white dress, her hair was tied up into a bun and held in place with a crown-shaped hair clip, and her eyes were shimmery and shiny. She was holding a pink wedding invitation up in her hand, as if she was afraid that everybody wouldn't see it.

"Hey Joyce…"

The entire nurses' station fell silent. Two of the nurses lowered their heads, pretending to organize the patient records.

"You absolutely have to come attend my wedding with Melvie!" she said, slamming the invitation down in front of me.

"We owe so much to you, after all. You're like our benefactor. Melvin would never be where he is today if not for you. And this wedding would never feel complete without you."

A benefactor?

She made such an effort to say those words so sweetly, but I didn't even look up at her.

"Alright. I'll be there."

She remained standing there without leaving.

"Then… How much are you going to spend on our wedding gift? We take cash as well. And judging by how close we are, it would only be right if you gave us at least 10,000 dollars as a gift."

10,000 dollars?

So, she wasn't here to give me the invitation. She was just here to extort more money from me.

I set down my pen. "Don't you think that the amount is too little?"

She immediately replied, "I think so too. After all, you're—"

"I'll give you a surprise."

Stacy was stunned.

"What surprise?"

"You'll find out tomorrow," I replied.

The smile froze on her face for a second. However, her sweet smile soon returned as she probably thought I meant I was going to give her more than what she asked for. Her lips curled upward again.

After she left, my phone began buzzing again and again.

"Jocelyn. Stacy said that you're coming to the wedding?

"How much are you planning to give us?

"We take cash too.

"Can't you reply to my messages?

"I need to meet you. Now."

I simply replied, "I don't have anything to discuss with you."

He quickly replied, "I know that I've let you down, but it's not what you think between Stacy and me. There's nothing going on between us at all."

Not what I thought?

Not even the matching hickeys or the used condoms?

Instead, I tapped into his contact and added him into my blocked contacts list. His chat window vanished at once.

My phone rang again with an unknown number. I answered it, and it was Melvin's voice. He sounded out of breath. "You blocked me? Listen, I—"

I hung up and blocked that number.

A second unknown number called me again. I ended the call and blocked it.

A third number called. I didn't even bother answering the call this time.

Finally, he sent me a text message.

"Just tell me what you really want, Jocelyn! Don't you dare mess things up! Stacy is still young and can't take nasty shocks."

Still young?

I couldn't be bothered to answer him and just blocked the number straightaway.

That night, I went back to the apartment to pack up the last of my clothes. A notepaper was slid under the door, also written in pink highlighter pen with a heart drawing on it.

"Don't forget your cash gift tomorrow, Joyce! Melvin and I will be waiting for your surprise!"

I folded the paper in half and pocketed it.

I knew that she would definitely enjoy my surprise for her tomorrow.

Jocelyn's POVI only started getting to know Adrian after marrying him. He wasn't the kind of person who would woo me with sweet nothings and romantic gestures. He moved my suitcase into the master bedroom the first day after our marriage and said, "We'll each live our own lives and not interfere with each other."However, the next morning, I would find a bowl of overnight oats on the table, made just the way I liked it, garnished with all my favorite fruits. He wouldn't greet me in the morning. He wouldn't tell me he loved me. He wouldn't tell me he missed me. However, he would show up at the hospital on rainy days. Instead of waiting in the car at the entrance, he would go down to the underground parking and text me to say he was here.If I had to work overtime or work graveyard shifts at the hospital, he would always leave out a light for me in the living room, not too bright so that it wouldn't be too glaring for me.He would also bring home little gifts and souvenirs for me

Third-person POVEarly on Monday morning, Melvin clocked in at the company as usual. However, when he pressed his thumb against the thumbprint sensor, the red light flashed once.He pressed his thumb to the sensor again, but the light still remained red. The third time he pressed it, the screen went completely black. The front desk receptionist glanced at him before hurriedly lowering her head again, pretending to organize the mail.Meanwhile, the HR director, Robert Taylor, came looking for Melvin personally. Three of them sat down opposite him, and it was quite a scene."This is your severance package, Melvin Norton, and your notice of removal. Kindly sign it.""But I did nothing wrong! Why are you firing me?"Robert sighed and said, "You've been with us for three years, Melvin, so I'll just be frank with you. Vaughan Group is our largest client, and they specifically said that they did not wish to see you again in any future setting."Melvin's face paled."Why? Just because

There was no grand ceremony at the wedding on the third floor. There were also no officiants and no exchange of rings, or anything of the sort.Adrian said that he didn't like anything too fancy or over-the-top.He just got a clerk from the town hall there to register the marriage for us. We filled in the forms, signed our names, and had the wedding licences officially stamped. The entire process didn't take more than ten minutes.Adrian then took both copies of our marriage certificates, putting one in my purse and the other in his pocket."You're my wife now," he said. His usual stoic face suddenly twitched for a second as his lips curled up.This was the first time I'd ever seen him smile.Downstairs, Melvin's wedding was still going on as usual, but the atmosphere had changed now.Someone sent a photo of the wedding invitation to the one on the third floor, with both Adrian's and my names on it, to the company group chat, and everyone immediately exploded."What the hell?"

The following Saturday at Orville Towers, a pink flower wall stretched from the elevator entrance to the banquet hall entrance on the first floor.A pink-and-white balloon archway added to the ambience, and a meticulously retouched wedding photo was displayed on the registration table.Stacy wore a rented mermaid wedding dress as she sat in the dressing room, touching up her makeup and putting on the third layer of mascara.Meanwhile, Melvin stood at the entrance greeting guests. His suit was also rented, and his tie was pink—a color that Stacy had picked out for him.A third of his groomsmen didn't turn up, and half of the ones who did had their noses buried in their phones the entire time. However, when the elevator came to a stop on the third floor, everything was quiet and elegant. There were no flower walls or balloon archways.Instead, two long rows of flower baskets lined up from the elevator to the entrance of the ballroom, Adrian's initials written on every basket. The f

On Thursday afternoon, I left work early to go home and pack up my things. When I pushed open the apartment door, I saw someone standing in front of the full-length mirror in the living room.It was Stacy, and she was wearing a wedding dress, but it wasn't hers. It was mine.I had carefully kept that wedding dress folded at the bottom of my suitcase, wrapped in silk.Mom loved to sew, and this was something she'd made for me on her sickbed, embroidering the fabric with my favorite cherry blossoms, stitch by stitch.A week before she passed away, she held my hand and said, "Even if I'm not around when you get married, I'll still be there to witness it as long as you wear this."It had been eight years since she passed, and I had never been able to wear it ever since. But now, Stacy was wearing it, twirling in front of the mirror as the hem trailed on the floor, picking up a layer of dust."Your wedding dress is so beautiful, Joyce! You won't get angry at me for trying it on just
