~ A M E L I A ~

Jolting up and gasping for air, I patted my throat to see where the wolf sunk its teeth into me. My mind slowly reconnected with my body, and I released a huge relieving sigh as I steadied my breath.

I fell asleep. It was only a dream.

It almost reminded me of one of the recurring nightmares I had as a child.

Looking up at the sky, which was now completely dark, just like in my dream, I rolled my eyes. Great, my mind was playing jokes on me now.

Nothing seemed right with me, especially in recent months. Ever since I got sick, feeling like I was dying, then suddenly recovering with more energy than I ever remember having.

My mind was in hyperdrive all the time. Not to mention, I’d been getting these wild urges, so intense that it made me want to break something if I didn’t get what I wanted.

And that dream, it felt so real.

What was happening to me?

The comfort I would get at night, when the moon was out, or when I was outside in nature, was different to a human connection to nature. I was sure of it.

Could I really be… a werewolf?

~ ~ ~

As expected, my return home didn’t go unnoticed.

Both my parents sprang up and rushed out of the kitchen to see me entering the front door, coat in hand being dragged against the floor.

My eyes were firmly locked on the ground. I was too ashamed to look at my parents, but I knew they were close, watching me.

‘It’s all true… isn’t it,’ I murmured.

They said nothing, likely unsure of what to say.

‘My senses are wildly enhanced, I can smell anything and everything from miles away; I can hear your whispers at night when you think I can’t hear you. My feelings are madly intensified: my sadness becomes sorrow; my anger becomes rage, and when I’m—’ I stopped myself, they didn’t need the graphic details of what I was becoming. I sighed, ‘I’m doing things I never would have done before, I feel so much power in me, I’m a danger to those I love. I am becoming something inhuman; I can feel it, and I can’t stop it…’ A tear tried to fall, but I wiped it away quickly as I finally looked up at my parents.

Dad was holding Mum close in his arms. Her eyes were puffy and wet. I imagined she’d not stopped crying since my sudden departure.

A long sigh escaped my dad’s mouth, he released his grip on Mum and walked over to me, ‘You are not inhuman, and you never will be. This isn’t a bad thing, what you’re becoming, it only will be if you allow it to be.’

I was speechless. Dad was being serious again. He was never serious.

‘Your birth father and his kind… the werewolves… they stay with their own kind as it’s safer that way. They avoid or have minimal contact with humans to prevent their exposure. It allows them to live peacefully. So, because of this, I don’t know much about him, but what I do know is that he was the kindest and strongest soul ever. Nothing inhuman in the slightest.’

A small smile grew on my face, ‘You knew him?’

Dad placed a hand on my shoulder, ‘He’s family, not by blood, but still family. We crossed paths and bonded for a very short time whilst I was at university,’ he paused briefly, grazing my cheek with the back of his hand, ‘I see a lot of him in you, and I see why he chose us to be the ones to care for you, and it has truly been an honour to be able to raise you. You’ve become an amazing, intelligent, strong young woman. He would have been so proud.’

Finally, I allowed the tear to fall down, ‘I’m sorry for running out on you both…’ My head dropped onto his chest.

His arms wrapped around me, and I felt Mum’s arm follow instantly after, pressing herself against me to make me sandwiched into a much-needed hug from my parents. Their warmth and love broke down all the pain I felt in my heart, giving me a sense of peace again.

‘We’re sorry for not being honest with you,’ Mum finally spoke, soft sobs lingering in her voice, ‘but we just wanted to keep you safe from the dangers that threatened you.’

After a long embrace, I wriggled myself out of my parents’ grip and released a small huff, ‘I want to know more. What are these threats? How did werewolves come to be? Where do these werewolves live if they are not within the society of humans?’

They both smiled, but Dad spoke, ‘All those answers, I hope and assume, are in the package you still haven’t opened.’

Mum rushed over to the antique drawers by the staircase, pulling a key from her pocket and unlocking the one on the far right, pulling out a folded sheet of paper.

Softly, my jaw dropped, ‘You said you didn’t have the key to that drawer!’

She grinned awkwardly, ‘Hopefully that’s the last lie about your double life. Here,’ Mum handed me the paper, ‘it’s the letter your birth father wrote to us when you were sent to us. We’d hoped it’d explain why he had to give you up but…’ she shrugged.

‘I think he was in a rush to get you away, so he kept it brief,’ Dad added.

They were right about that. I scanned the letter, but there was no indication of what the threat against my life was, or any other facts that could tell me more about where I came from. Just him pleading with my parents to keep me safe and raise me as their own.

My eyes dropped to the bottom and saw the sign-off…

E.

‘He signed it “E”, so his name begins with an E?’ I looked up at Dad.

He nodded.

My brows perked up, waiting for more, but he said nothing, ‘He wanted you to withhold his name from me, didn’t he?

Dad nodded again, with the addition of a sigh.

I looked down at the letter, scanning it again, only to confirm my birth father mentioned it in this letter to withhold any information my parents knew about him from me.

‘He said in the letter to me, he’d withhold information to keep me safe,’ I said, shaking my head, ‘but how can I learn about my birth parents if no one will tell me who they are?’

‘Truthfully, darling, we don’t know much about him or his wife, or about werewolves. But you should know more than us eventually…’ Mum gestured her head up towards the stairs.

Gazing up the stairs. Could all the answers to my questions truly be within that package? I ran up the first couple of steps but then paused and turned to my parents.

‘Go,’ Mum whispered, ‘We’ll be here when you’re ready.’

~ ~ ~

As I rested on my knees on the floor, I slowly and carefully used my scissors to slit the tape sealing the package, popping it open.

My palms were sweating.

This was it.

Peeling the box flaps back and holding them down, I leaned over the box, scooping out all the packing filler away and allowing it to fall all over the floor.

My heart was pounding so hard it felt like it was going to pop out of my chest.

Breathe, Amelia. Breathe.

Inside was a wooden chest. It looked to be hand-carved with breathtaking details of wolves, trees one would find in a forest and the moon. Sticking true to the theme.

Chewing on my lip, I clicked the chest open and, one by one pulled out the contents…

Numerous letters, obviously written by my birth father.

An old book, which looked to be some sort of journal.

Another old book, slightly larger than the first. After a brief skim, the contents seemed to cover the history of the pack that my birth father was a part of. It had a drawing of a map inside, of what appeared to be a small village.

A key, with no indication of what it opened. It was clearly for nothing within the chest. Great. I hoped the letters would reveal the answer to that mystery.

Lastly, a flat and small black box. I opened it to find a gorgeous necklace. An upside-down triangular black stone, encased in silver - beautifully wrapping the stone, as if it was melted on command to create such a beautiful design, sitting on a simple silver chain. A stunning piece of jewellery.

I sighed, placing the necklace back in the box and staring into space. Needless to say, I was hopeful for a little more, and something about my birth mother too.

Glancing over to the package, I saw a white card at the bottom that I must have missed. I picked it up and saw the date noted on the corner. July 17th 2006. My birthday.

Flipping the card over, I saw a photograph of a baby in a woman’s arms. It was me and my birth mother. The image was so closely focused on me that I couldn’t indicate any features of this woman that would help me identify her. Yet, even though I couldn’t see her, I could feel her happiness. It made me smile.

Where was she? Was she alive?

My mind goes into a spiral of wonder and a spark of curiosity fires up in me, ready to burst. I had to know more. I had to know everything.

One by one, I ripped all the letters open and began reading them all.

As I consumed the final letter, my smile fizzled away. Something wasn’t right, the letters stopped so abruptly. That letter didn’t feel like it was intended to be my birth father’s final letter.

Did something happen to my birth parents?

The fear of something bad happening to them lingered and churned in my gut.

I gazed over at the map of the village in the open history book.

If I wanted more answers, if I wanted all the answers, I had to go there.

I had to find this village.

~ ONE MONTH LATER ~~ A M E L I A ~By some crazy miracle, I did it. I found the village. It proved to be more difficult to find than I had hoped. Nonetheless, I was here! Langdale - the name given to this village to be able to hide in plain sight, concealing their true identity from the outside world full of humans. A genius move made by whoever was in charge way back when the village, and more specifically the pack, was still growing. With the help of my birth father and all the information he supplied to me, though it wasn’t much, it was just enough to help me find my way here. Now I was here, in Langdale, which was really home to the Silver Moon pack; the pack I was apparently born in before being whisked away to be raised by humans, totally unaware of what secrets were hiding away in my own blood. A month had passed since receiving the letters from my birth father, who I referred to as “E” at times since that was all I knew about him so far. It took time to get things in or

~ A M E L I A ~I was still in a small state of shock that the school allowed me to attend this late in the academic year; having exceeding grades in most of my classes helped. Plus, I mentioned to them that I was at a human school but that I am a pure-blood werewolf, so perhaps they felt inclined to have me be in a school with my own kind. Truthfully, I should have been thankful that they didn’t ask too many questions. After a failed introduction with the head teacher, who was frantically organising paperwork he had mistakenly dropped and mixed with another set of paperwork, I took a folder full of documents I required from the receptionist and scurried away to find my locker. Once found, I opened my locker shoved my bag inside and pulled out a sheet of paper from the folder with my class schedule on it to see what I had first. Health - 9am to 10am. A compulsory subject, so I was told, which felt quite odd given I was in Year 13, my final year of school. Surely we’d learnt all

I was speechless. How was I going to handle that when the time came?‘That was traumatising.’The voice jolted me, I looked to my side, ‘Oh, Sammy,’ I forced a chuckle, ‘Yeah, not what I was expecting on my first day.’Sammy laughed nervously, scratching her neck, ‘I’m not looking forward to experiencing that.’

Rolling over to lay on my stomach, I answered the video call request, ‘Hi Mum!’‘Darling! How was your first day?’ Mum smiled. Her eyes were slightly red, it looked like she’d been crying.I let out an exaggerated sigh, ‘It was intense, but a good start I think! Have you been crying again?’‘No!’ She responded almost instantly, pulling out a tissue and dabbing the inner corners of her eyes.Rolling my eyes, I laughed, ‘Mum, please, I’ll be coming back once I find out the truth about my birth parents and learn how to control my wolf abilities better. I’ve already learnt so much about being a wolf in one day—maybe more than I want to know—but it’s still more than before!’Mum sighed, ‘I know, sweetie, but I just wish your dad and I could’ve come there with you, but with his work and mine—‘‘I know, Mum, it’s OK. ~ A M E L I A ~A short and somewhat clement gasp escaped Sammy’s mouth. Eyes wide at first, then suddenly blinking over and over again as the arrow stands still right in front of her face. Whatever alcohol she has consumed, in combination with her shock, has numbed her enough to be motionless. My breathing was heavy, but overflowing with relief. My eyes locked onto my fist, clenched around the shaft of the arrow, astounded at my own reflexes kicking in so fast, despite my mind running so slowly.I knew the transition to becoming a werewolf was to gain enhanced abilities, but I didn’t expect it to be to this extent. I’ve been severely underestimating everything so far. How much stronger could I possibly become? ‘Holy fuck…’ Sammy uttered in an exhalation, so quietly that if it wasn’t for my heightened hearing, I surely wouldn’t

The homes themselves were so classic looking, with thatched roofs and exposed timber frames, it almost felt as if they were pulled straight out from the Tudor times. It was a refreshing sight to see.Even with the village glacially adapting to an urban environment, the natural environment was one with the village too. I could do with a drink myself.’ I looped my arm with hers and guided her towards the bar. ~ A M E L I A ~With the curse finally being lifted, the people of the Silver Moon pack celebrated for three days straight, immediately after the Battle for Alpha ended, and I was deemed the new leader, the youngest Alpha leader ever in the entire history of the pack, claiming that title from my birth father. I thought and hoped he would’ve been proud that it was me who took that title. Truthfully, I’d expected more backlash for my rise from being essentially rankless to then becoming Alpha, but it seemed that the people of Silver Moon had the utmost respect for my birth parents, as well as gaining respect for me for saving them from the dreaded 18-year curse. The people of the pack were able to enjoy the freedom of having their powers back. I, however, had no chance to embrace my powers or even try shifting yet. There was too much to do, and I had no time to rest, not yet.Moving arrangements for one—I was now the Alpha, and moving back home with my adoptive parents was no longer a

~ A M E L I A ~I looked at the guards, ‘Please ensure Draven doesn’t try anything stupid.’With that, I sped through the forest, not realising how tame my wolf speed was before gaining access to my full power. It was a level I could not even fathom to explain. Magical? Fantastic? Out of this world? Yes, all of the above. My nose locked in on her scent swiftly, it was as if I could physically see her just through her scent. She was running back towards the pack, but she wasn’t going to make it. All of my senses were locked on her. I could smell the fear in her sweat and hear the panic in her panting breath. I slowed my pace and moved around enough to make her struggle to decipher where exactly I was coming from, only making her panic more as I moved in closer, finally being able to see her with my eyes. She came to a halt suddenly, frantically searching around, and when she went to move off again, I was there, standing right in front of her. ‘Going somewhere, Yurena?’ I stepped fo

~ A M E L I A ~ His voice was as clear as day in my mind, yet part of me felt like it was all a dream. Yet it wasn’t a dream. It was real, but it was about to turn into a nightmare when my attention was brought to Draven and the dagger in his hand as he pulled back, ready to plunge it into his son’s heart. With more speed than I had ever been able to harness before, I flashed towards them, leaping onto Draven’s back and swinging myself to the side to throw him off and send him skidding away. ‘Everett, Everett!’ I said in a panic, dragging my hands across his chest to check for any wounds. He groaned as he sat up, ‘I’m okay, I’m okay… just weak from the wolfsbane.’ He placed his hand over the stab wound in his stomach to stop it from bleeding, and with his free hand, he placed it on my cheek, looking deep into my eyes, ‘Amelia.’ With tear-stained eyes, I smiled and placed my hand on top of his, ‘Everett.’‘How dare you!’ Draven hissed as he came to a stand and walked slowly back t

~ A M E L I A ~‘No!’ I groaned and shoved my heels in the dirt before I hauled myself down towards the ground, using his weight to bring him down too. As he was above me, I used my legs to throw him to my side before bolting away from the cliff. By this point, I had used too much of my wolf speed and was struggling to lock into it fully. I needed full access to my wolf side. Draven sped after me, though he was also worn out; he still had full access to his power, which gave him that advantage. He hurtled himself at me, tackling me to stumble and fall into the bushes. A twist and crack of my ankle made me wail out in pain. I couldn’t see my friends, but I knew they were on edge watching the scene before them. Hudson and Everett both were likely fighting every urge within them not to get involved. They knew if they did, the challenge would become void, and I would lose instantly. They believed in me enough to fight this on my own. I’ve got this. I can do this!Pinning me down, Drav

~ A M E L I A ~Within those first few seconds, I knew that his fighting tactics differed from Everett’s—where he would wait for his opponent to come for him to then take them down, Draven was a head-on type of fighter. That only made him more unpredictable for me and lowered any advantage I could have even more. Focus. My mind hissed. Locking in on the situation before me, I stood still and waited for the right moment. Draven clenched his hands into fists. Watching closely, I spotted his right hand draw back ever so slightly. That was my mark. I waited for him to get closer and closer, to make a move. As he pushed with his left foot and lunged closer as he drew his right fist back, it was time for me to dodge and counter. I leant back as his fist moved for my face, grabbing his wrist and arm, pushing his punch away from me to miss my head. Using that momentum, I twirled around and skidded back, dropping to my hands and knees. Not having time to think things further, I pushed fo

~ A M E L I A ~All my friends tried to keep me busy and distracted during the day. We played board games, watched movies, and even had a picnic in the forest. However, I was struggling to eat and ended up watching the sun move in the sky, teasing me with what was to come. There was no more avoiding the inevitable.‘I’ll be right back,’ I said quietly, pushing myself to my feet and making my way back into my cottage. I’d become so comfortable with this home, and the chances were, win or lose, I’d not be returning to this home.I poured myself a cold glass of water and took a couple of sips before tipping the rest down the sink. Resting my hands on the kitchen counter, I tried to hash out a strategy to help me with the upcoming battle, but everything I thought of always resulted in the same thing: me losing.Draven was an Alpha werewolf, and before then, he was a powerful Beta. We had all stuck together in the living room, moving the coffee table and the sofas to allow more space for us all to sleep on the floor. The guys brought the mattress from my bedroom and the guest bedroom to lie on the ground so they all had something comfortable to sleep on. Gabriel and Kaylee were on one mattress, while Sammy and Theo were on the other—they all had fallen asleep not long after I pretended to. I was lying on one of the sofas. Peeling my eyes open slowly, I noticed the other sofa was still vacant, and two people were not in my line of sight. I searched the room carefully to see where they had gone off, too, trying not to get caught for being awake. Both Everett and Hudson were standing by the back door, looking out to the
