The door swung open, and Remi hurried in, her robes fluttering behind her.

Her eyes went straight to me, and I caught the flash of worry that she quickly tried to hide.

"My Queen," she said breathlessly, rushing to my side. Her hands hovered above me, her gaze flicking from my face to my stomach. "Tell me what happened."

Veldrin, the one who responded before I could even breathe.

"She's in pain, Remi. Her legs cramped; she could not move. When I tried to touch her, I was rejected by some invisible force. Fix this. Now." His voice was low, sharp, and commanding.

The way he spoke now was the sound of The Lycan King. He was not asking, but he was demanding.

I flinched at the anger vibrating in his tone. Not anger at me, but at the helplessness tearing him apart.

Remi bowed her head quickly.

"Yes, Your Majesty. I will examine her right away." She looked at me, her voice softening. "Please, my lady, relax, don't be scared..."

I nodded weakly, clutching the sheets beneath me.

I growled and rubbed my temples, hearing my wolf words. 'Kyrex, she wasn't sneezing. She was in pain. And I couldn't do a damn thing about it.''Yes, I noticed. You almost ripped Remi's head off before she could finish a sentence. Very majestic. Very Kingly. Truly inspiring.'I scowled. 'Are you mocking me?''Absolutely,' he replied without shame. 'Because right now, you're embarrassing both of us. You can't collapse every time Rissa stubs her toe. You're supposed to be the Lycan King, not a fragile husband wringing his hands at the kitchen counter.'Despite my sour mood, I almost laughed. The wolf had a point. Almost. 'You're forgetting one thing. She's not just my wife. She's carrying my child. Our child. The heir of this kingdom!''Oh, I know that. It's insulting that you think I forgot about it. That's why I'm telling you to stop whining. The pup doesn't need a father who panics whenever the wind changes direction. You think Rissa wants to look at her big, bad king and see a pud

My hand clenched tightly, hearing her words. I know she will never betray me, but I also can't ignore the evidence. Before I could say anything, suddenly Kyrex's voice interrupted me, 'She is telling the truth. She has no hand in this. Her oath binds her. Her hands healed Rissa, not harmed her.''Then who?' I thought the question was like a burning coal between my ribs. The room seemed too narrow, and every face in my mind crowded forward as suspect and motive. I saw Keala's quick smile, the maids' dutiful presence, and the half-remembered visitors to the castle. My brain, traitorously inventive, spun out possible conspiracies like a hawk testing the wind. But Remi—Remi was the one in the room with Larissa during lunch. She drank the tea and ate the cookie from Remi. Opportunity drew a pattern with clean, sharp lines. All those lines are now pointing at Remi!"Listen to me," I said more softly, "You stay here. You watch. You do not leave. You do everything in your power to find w

For a moment, I stood there staring at both of the maids in return. I know they told the truth, and none of them lied to me. I could also hear their thoughts, no malicious spark in their minds. They are both clean.'They are clean.' Kyrex seems to have thought the same as I did. "Get out," I growled. They scrambled away, skirts fluttering like frightened birds. The moment the door shut, I began pacing again. My wolf growled inside me, restless.'If Keala harmed her, I'll...''Careful,' Ky interrupted. 'We don't have any proof. Yet.''I don't need proof to rip someone apart,' I snarled back.'And if you kill her for nothing?'I froze. My fists tightened until my claws pierced my palms. Blood dripped to the floor, sizzling with heat from my fury.'Then I'll tear apart the real culprit next,' I muttered.Ky groaned inside me. 'Sometimes I wonder how you became king. Your plans are always "kill first, regret later."''It works,' I snapped.'Not for your Mate,' he countered, his voice da

I stormed out of the bedroom and paced back and forth in the living room like a caged beast. My claws itched to tear something apart, but the only thing I wanted to rip away was my Mate's pain. Imagining her lying there, her body cramped and suffering, made my entire chest ache. If I could, I'd gladly take all of it onto myself. I wished the pain would transfer to me.Minutes ticked by like hours. My ears strained for any sound from inside the room. My instincts told me to go back, break down the door, and push Remi out of the way, but I forced myself to stay still. I clenched my fists so tightly that I could feel my knuckles pop.'No, Veldrin. You must wait. Remi needs peace to work. If you barge in, you'll ruin everything.'I nodded to myself, though it felt like I was being strangled. My feet dragged me toward the window, and I stared into the dark night, trying to calm the storm tearing me apart. But peace never came. Not when I couldn't see my Mate.A breath left me, long a

"Rissa? Are you alright?"Veldrin suddenly appeared before me. I knew he must have felt my emotions, felt the sharp sting of my pain through our bond."I don't know, but my lower body feels cramped. I can't move..." My voice trembled, the fear behind my words too difficult to hide.He grabbed my hand tightly, his grip enough to make me feel less hurt, or at least that's what I tried to show him when his eyes darted across my face. Without hesitation, he lifted me into his arms, his movements quick and in a hurry as he carried me to the bedroom. He laid me gently on the bed, his touch trembling though he tried to hide it. Still, I can clearly see how scared his gaze is now. Then, with desperate eyes, he reached toward my stomach. But the moment his palm was about to touch, something invisible and powerful pushed him away. His hand flung back as if burned, and he winced in pain."What? What happened here? Why can't I touch you?" His voice rose, panic shaking every word. His gaze lock
