Chapter 2

ผู้เขียน: Jojo
As soon as Cody returned to the Harvey villa, a cold, detached voice rang out from above.

"Get down on your knees."

His body stiffened, and his knees buckled instinctively.

Jennifer sat on the couch, leafing through the medical diagnosis report he had left on the table. Her tone was indifferent as she said, "You've grown quite bold, haven't you? Smearing Titus online wasn't enough, so you forged a medical record too?

"Terminal stomach cancer? What a sick joke."

Titus stood to the side, offering a gentle smile. "Don't be mad, Jenny. Cody probably just wanted to get your attention.

"Really, Cody, if you have any grievances against me, just say so. Why go on a livestream to slander me, claiming I caused your parents' deaths, and lie about being on your deathbed? Did you think it would make people pity you?"

A flicker of bitterness crossed Cody's eyes.

He had known all along that speaking out online would be futile. Harvey Group would scrub every trace of those videos clean anyway.

He had just wanted to unload all of those thoughts onto someone for once, and that interview had given him a way to do so. That was all.

"I'm sorry, I shouldn't have…" Cody began, his apology practiced and automatic. But when he looked up, his gaze fell upon a jade pendant around Titus' neck.

The apology caught in his throat. His pupils contracted sharply. "Where did you get that?"

Jennifer replied, "I gave it to him."

Cody's frail frame shuddered.

Years ago, when they were still dating, back when Jennifer had kept her true identity hidden from him, she had come down with a persistent, high fever. Cody had stayed by her side, nursing her through the long, sleepless nights.

Dominic and Selena, frantic with worry, had even insisted on giving her their family heirloom, the jade pendant. They said, "This is a precious heirloom. It will protect you from harm."

Jennifer resisted, but they insisted on giving it to her.

"To us, you're not just Cody's girlfriend. You're like our own daughter. Take it, Jenny, and live a good life from now on."

After Titus caused the deaths of Cody's parents, he had their home set ablaze. Cody had managed to escape with Cayo, but he could only watch helplessly as everything related to his parents was consumed by the flames.

Through a strange twist of fate, the jade pendant had become the only surviving memento of his parents. He had asked for it back many times, but Jennifer had always refused.

Now, she said, with an air of casual indifference, "The things you posted online didn't cause much of a stir, but Titus' influencer friend cut ties with him, and he's quite upset. I gave him the jade pendant to make it up to him."

Cody couldn't believe that she'd want to compensate a murderer.

A flicker passed through Jennifer's eyes when she saw the calm on his face finally shattering.

In the past, she had found it tiresome when Cody resorted to all sorts of schemes out of jealousy. Yet, his recent, uncharacteristic docility left her feeling unsettled.

She had expected him to lash out this time. Instead, he remained silent for a long while before forcing a smile and replying, "Right… Of course. That's only fair…"

Had he really become so submissive that he would accept anything thrown his way?

Jennifer's expression didn't soften. If anything, she was even more displeased. She looked away, unable to stand the sight of him.

"Fine. Go kneel outside the door as your punishment."

Cody lowered his gaze and limped toward the doorway.

Anna Reed, the maid, glanced at him and tossed down a board studded with sharp nails.

"You know the rules."

Without a word, he dropped to his knees on the board, allowing the sharp points to pierce into his flesh. A searing, agonizing pain shot from his knees all the way to his head. His face turned deathly pale, but he gritted his teeth, refusing to make a sound.

His gaze drifted back into the room. Titus laughed as he wrapped his arms around Jennifer's neck. They tumbled onto the couch, and soon, the room was filled with suggestive sounds.

Cody felt a sharp, piercing pain in his chest as he watched.

His knees ached, and the last vestiges of his genuine feelings—the only bit of sincerity he had left for her— ached just as much.

After some time, Jennifer helped Titus dress and saw him off to a social gathering. She didn't even spare Cody a glance as she brushed past him.

Even Anna felt a flicker of pity for Cody. As she helped him up, she couldn't help but ask, "Mr. Lawson, you clearly have feelings for Ms. Harvey. Doesn't it hurt to see things like that?"

Cody's legs were drenched in blood, and the pain was so intense it had numbed into nothingness. But he simply cast a fleeting look downward and said softly, "Why would it hurt?

"You know my line of work. Aren't we supposed to be docile and obedient, obeying our sugar mommies for their money instead of their love? As for who she truly loves… I don't really care about it. Besides—"

Before Cody could say he was going to die soon, a cold, chilling voice echoed right by his ear.

"You don't care about it?"

Startled, he turned his head around.

He didn't know when Jennifer had returned, but she was glaring at him, her eyes roiling with an anger he couldn't even begin to fathom.

Cody backed away from Meredith and exclaimed, "No, you… You also lied to me earlier! So, it's only fair that I used you to get back at Jennifer!"With that, Cody turned and ran off, with Meredith's soft laughter echoing behind him for a long time.Marcus had also followed Meredith back to the country. Cody stayed with him for the night, but he remained adamant about not seeing Meredith, choosing to act as if everything that had happened before had never taken place. The next day, when Meredith came to find him, her smile was gone."Jennifer was released on bail by her lawyers," she said. "After kneeling all night before your parents' graves, she took her own life. The remainder of the Harvey family's assets has been left to you."Having lived her entire life in a position of great privilege, Jennifer couldn't bring herself to face the prospect of a trial and sentencing, so she chose to end her own life instead. For a fleeting moment, Cody was lost in a daze.A video Jennifer had

The next day, Jennifer did something she never usually did. She walked into Cody's room and insisted that he record a video."I remember you once recorded a video for your future self ten years from then, when you were 18 years old. How about we record another one now, for ten years from today?" she asked. "It won't take any trouble at all. You just have to smile for the camera."Though deeply annoyed, Cody gritted his teeth and played along. After Cody said a few words of well-wishes to the camera, Jennifer found herself staring, transfixed, at his face."Cody…"She reached out to touch his brows and eyes, leaning in closer. Cody's expression shifted instantly, and he struck her across the face. "What do you think you're doing? What do you want?"In all her life, Jennifer had never once been slapped before, but she wasn't angry. She only felt a desperate need to hold onto his hand."You know what I want. Cody, it's been nearly a month since you came back," she said, pressing cl

Jennifer hadn't yet fully recovered from her injuries, but she insisted on being discharged from the hospital. She brought Cody back to the Harvey villa with her and asked him, with a cautious look, "This is the master bedroom. Do you want to stay here?"And as for the wedding rings and our marriage, if that's what you want, I can start making arrangements right now…"There had been a time when Cody had longed to marry Jennifer and become her husband, but that pure, naive affection had long since vanished into thin air the moment he discovered her deception. With a look of weary disgust, Cody turned his head away. "I refuse to live in a place where Titus once stayed. And I don't want a wedding or any rings of the sort. All I want is for you to stay as far away from me as possible."Gone was the overbearing, imperious Jennifer who once demanded absolute obedience. She ignored the sharp pain piercing her heart and replied gently, "Alright. I got it."If Cody didn't want to see her,

The bodyguards stationed outside the gate burst in at once, moving to attack Cody without a second thought."Don't!"Jennifer managed to force the words out of her throat before they actually harmed him. Left with no other choice, the bodyguards called for an ambulance instead. However, they also forbade Cody from leaving, forcing him to wait outside the emergency room.Cody remained unbothered and kept his head down to scroll on his phone, occasionally replying to messages from Marcus. One of the bodyguards, enraged by this, demanded, "What do you think you're doing? Do you have any idea how devastated Ms. Harvey was after you faked your death? She nearly followed you to the grave! "And yet, here you are, not the least bit concerned about her when you've caused her so much harm! She's in there fighting for her life, and you couldn't care less about her!"The bodyguards still viewed Cody as the timid, cowering kept man he had once been at the Harvey villa. But Cody set his phone

Meredith accompanied Cody on the flight back to his home country. He headed straight for the cemetery, but stopped at the entrance. Turning to Meredith, he said, "I'd like to go in alone, Ms. Skye."His tone carried a hint of distance. Gone was the gentle, dependent warmth he had shown toward her before. However, he didn't rebuke her harshly or demand an explanation for her deception. For once, Meredith felt a rare sense of uncertainty. She asked, "Are you sure you want to go alone? You know—""There are some things that I have to face on my own," Cody replied, his lips curving into a brilliant, radiant smile. He then reached out and took the knife Meredith kept with her and said, "Let me borrow this. I'll return it to you later."The smile was so dazzling that Meredith couldn't even find the words to respond. By the time she collected herself, Cody had already turned and walked into the cemetery.Dominic's and Selena's graves had been restored, with fresh flowers laid upon them.

Cody felt a deep sense of compassion for the timid, trembling Marcus, most probably because of the little boy in his memories. He brought Marcus back to his room, told him stories, and stayed beside him as he slept. In fact, they got along so well that even Meredith found herself excluded, left standing outside the door. When Stella arrived to deliver some documents, she cast a cautious glance at Meredith, who was standing at the bedroom entrance."Ms. Skye? Ahem, Ms. Skye, I need your signature on these documents."Meredith took the documents. "Are you making fun of me?""How could I possibly dare?" Stella exclaimed, feigning shock.Having weathered a literal sea of blood and corpses alongside Meredith, Stella was genuinely heartened to see her showing signs of a more human side. Her exaggerated expression faded, replaced by a soft, irrepressible smile. "You seem much better this way, Ms. Skye. But Mr. Lawson's memories are beginning to return. Given his personality, I'm af
