Chapter 5

ผู้เขียน: Jojo
Cody heard a buzz in his ears. He couldn't believe that Titus actually played the video of his mother being humiliated in public.

He stepped forward in a panic, unable to find the switch for the projector, so he just grabbed the nearest thing and threw it at the screen, but it was no use.

The video continued to play, and everyone was looking at his mother onscreen with shock and contempt.

Tears fell down at some point, and Cody begged desperately, "Don't look at it, please don't look at it!"

"Enough!"

Jennifer had someone unplug the power supply, gave a long look at Titus, and turned around to yell at Cody.

"The security guard checked the surveillance. It was you who changed Titus' video, just to embarrass him while he was giving his speech! Why are you pretending to act all crazy now?"

"How could I—"

However, Cody suddenly understood everything the moment he looked into Jennifer's eyes. She knew it was Titus who did it, but she was just blaming it on him.

However, Cody refused to comply because it involved Selena this time. He absolutely refused to give in and yelled, "Then tell the security guard to play the surveillance video in public! Show everyone the proof that it was me who did it!"

Jennifer's eyes flashed with astonishment.

Cody had always been obedient recently. When Titus broke old Mrs. Harvey Senior's vase, Cody was punished on his behalf and got whipped a hundred times without offering any resistance. And when Titus triggered an allergic reaction in her business partner's child, Cody immediately sank to his knees to apologize, not even saying a word when his arm was forcibly broken.

So, why was his reaction so intense this time?

But before she had time to think about it, she lowered her voice and warned him gravely, "Cody, think about your brother. Your parents' death anniversary is coming soon, and you don't want their graves to be dug up, do you?"

Cody couldn't believe his ears. How could she use that as a threat against him?

All the sounds were stuck in his throat, and Cody felt a chill all over his body.

After a while, he looked at everyone and suppressed his sobs.

"Yes… I was the one who did it… I'm sorry…"

The guests began murmuring amongst themselves in disdain.

"How shameless."

"Like mother, like son. His entire family is nothing but trash."

"Poor Titus… How could he put up with a piece of shit like him at home?"

"What good is sorry?" Clint suddenly said, roaring at Cody. "You completely ruined the annual party for everyone! Shouldn't you be punished even more for this?"

Titus pulled Jennifer's sleeve and said, "Jenny, maybe we shouldn't—"

Clint turned angrily and said, "Titus! You're too soft and kind for your own good! That's the reason why you always get bullied and walked all over!

"And Ms. Harvey, Titus is your husband! Are you not going to punish Cody for pulling this embarrassing stunt on him?"

Jennifer thought it over for a moment. She couldn't bear to lay a hand on Cody, so she got someone to bring over a huge box of whisky. "Then, I'll just make him drink everything in this box as his punishment."

Before Clint could speak, Cody trembled and said, "I can't drink—"

He had an advanced stage of stomach cancer, and drinking alcohol would only accelerate his death.

However, Jennifer only took it as Cody throwing another temper tantrum again and shot back, "People who worked at Nirvana Host Club can all handle their alcohol. This is already the lightest punishment for you."

She then turned and ordered the bodyguard, "Force it all down his throat."

The bodyguard stepped forward and forced Cody to open his mouth, pouring all the contents of the whisky straight down his throat.

Cody felt as though all his internal organs were twisting together in pain as the burning liquid was forced straight down his stomach. He wouldn't stop retching, but Jennifer remained unmoved.

The bodyguard kept pouring, much of the whisky spilling down Cody's clothes as he choked and struggled. By the time he was released, he collapsed to the floor, his clothes soaked and his face frighteningly pale.

Jennifer's eyes flashed with a barely perceptible trace of distress, and she said to the bodyguard, "Take him to the lounge. He's nothing but an embarrassment."

As soon as Cody was dragged out to the lounge, he trembled hard as he took out the painkillers and swallowed them down, mixed with his own blood.

When the severe pain finally subsided, he took out his phone and looked at the family photo on the screensaver in a trance.

"I'm completely useless, aren't I, Mom, Dad? I'm sorry I can't fight back or resist them because I still need money for Cayo's treatment…"

As tears fell on the screen, a phone call came in. It was the person in charge of the cemetery, and his tone was very anxious.

"Mr. Lawson, a group of people are here to dig up your parents' graves! Come over as soon as you can!"

Cody backed away from Meredith and exclaimed, "No, you… You also lied to me earlier! So, it's only fair that I used you to get back at Jennifer!"With that, Cody turned and ran off, with Meredith's soft laughter echoing behind him for a long time.Marcus had also followed Meredith back to the country. Cody stayed with him for the night, but he remained adamant about not seeing Meredith, choosing to act as if everything that had happened before had never taken place. The next day, when Meredith came to find him, her smile was gone."Jennifer was released on bail by her lawyers," she said. "After kneeling all night before your parents' graves, she took her own life. The remainder of the Harvey family's assets has been left to you."Having lived her entire life in a position of great privilege, Jennifer couldn't bring herself to face the prospect of a trial and sentencing, so she chose to end her own life instead. For a fleeting moment, Cody was lost in a daze.A video Jennifer had

The next day, Jennifer did something she never usually did. She walked into Cody's room and insisted that he record a video."I remember you once recorded a video for your future self ten years from then, when you were 18 years old. How about we record another one now, for ten years from today?" she asked. "It won't take any trouble at all. You just have to smile for the camera."Though deeply annoyed, Cody gritted his teeth and played along. After Cody said a few words of well-wishes to the camera, Jennifer found herself staring, transfixed, at his face."Cody…"She reached out to touch his brows and eyes, leaning in closer. Cody's expression shifted instantly, and he struck her across the face. "What do you think you're doing? What do you want?"In all her life, Jennifer had never once been slapped before, but she wasn't angry. She only felt a desperate need to hold onto his hand."You know what I want. Cody, it's been nearly a month since you came back," she said, pressing cl

Jennifer hadn't yet fully recovered from her injuries, but she insisted on being discharged from the hospital. She brought Cody back to the Harvey villa with her and asked him, with a cautious look, "This is the master bedroom. Do you want to stay here?"And as for the wedding rings and our marriage, if that's what you want, I can start making arrangements right now…"There had been a time when Cody had longed to marry Jennifer and become her husband, but that pure, naive affection had long since vanished into thin air the moment he discovered her deception. With a look of weary disgust, Cody turned his head away. "I refuse to live in a place where Titus once stayed. And I don't want a wedding or any rings of the sort. All I want is for you to stay as far away from me as possible."Gone was the overbearing, imperious Jennifer who once demanded absolute obedience. She ignored the sharp pain piercing her heart and replied gently, "Alright. I got it."If Cody didn't want to see her,

The bodyguards stationed outside the gate burst in at once, moving to attack Cody without a second thought."Don't!"Jennifer managed to force the words out of her throat before they actually harmed him. Left with no other choice, the bodyguards called for an ambulance instead. However, they also forbade Cody from leaving, forcing him to wait outside the emergency room.Cody remained unbothered and kept his head down to scroll on his phone, occasionally replying to messages from Marcus. One of the bodyguards, enraged by this, demanded, "What do you think you're doing? Do you have any idea how devastated Ms. Harvey was after you faked your death? She nearly followed you to the grave! "And yet, here you are, not the least bit concerned about her when you've caused her so much harm! She's in there fighting for her life, and you couldn't care less about her!"The bodyguards still viewed Cody as the timid, cowering kept man he had once been at the Harvey villa. But Cody set his phone

Meredith accompanied Cody on the flight back to his home country. He headed straight for the cemetery, but stopped at the entrance. Turning to Meredith, he said, "I'd like to go in alone, Ms. Skye."His tone carried a hint of distance. Gone was the gentle, dependent warmth he had shown toward her before. However, he didn't rebuke her harshly or demand an explanation for her deception. For once, Meredith felt a rare sense of uncertainty. She asked, "Are you sure you want to go alone? You know—""There are some things that I have to face on my own," Cody replied, his lips curving into a brilliant, radiant smile. He then reached out and took the knife Meredith kept with her and said, "Let me borrow this. I'll return it to you later."The smile was so dazzling that Meredith couldn't even find the words to respond. By the time she collected herself, Cody had already turned and walked into the cemetery.Dominic's and Selena's graves had been restored, with fresh flowers laid upon them.

Cody felt a deep sense of compassion for the timid, trembling Marcus, most probably because of the little boy in his memories. He brought Marcus back to his room, told him stories, and stayed beside him as he slept. In fact, they got along so well that even Meredith found herself excluded, left standing outside the door. When Stella arrived to deliver some documents, she cast a cautious glance at Meredith, who was standing at the bedroom entrance."Ms. Skye? Ahem, Ms. Skye, I need your signature on these documents."Meredith took the documents. "Are you making fun of me?""How could I possibly dare?" Stella exclaimed, feigning shock.Having weathered a literal sea of blood and corpses alongside Meredith, Stella was genuinely heartened to see her showing signs of a more human side. Her exaggerated expression faded, replaced by a soft, irrepressible smile. "You seem much better this way, Ms. Skye. But Mr. Lawson's memories are beginning to return. Given his personality, I'm af
