Something About Rain

Sadoche

It’s already raining when I reached Kori’s house. Since I’m already drenching, I throw my bag on the porch and stayed under the rain. It’s already dark, the only light outside is the flash of lightning in the sky.

The rain will not stop anytime soon so I lie on my back, feeling the cold concrete. I stare blankly at the roaring sky, not minding the painful drops of rain.

I heard the front door opened but I’m too tired to care. I closed my eyes, feeling the cold, hard ground. The rain is still pouring but I’m suddenly not feeling the raindrops. When I opened my eyes, Kori’s face comes into view.

“What on earth are you doing there, boy?” he asked, he looks like a grim reaper on his black coat. “Get up, dummy. You’re going to catch a cold.”

He pulled me up and basically dragged me inside the house. He threw a towel on my face and went into the kitchen. I was able to strip on my clothes and cover my waist with the towel when he returned. Kori handed me the blanket on the couch and put the hot chocolate on the coffee table.

“You and your weird love of rain.” He shook his head then sipped on his hot chocolate.

I hate rain, I never loved it.

When I didn’t make a move, he reached for the mug on the coffee table and thrust it to me. I took a long sip, not wanting to talk to him.

“Your Mom called.” He stated, “She’s asking why you didn’t stay in your Manor in the OKV.”

I heave a sigh. I don’t want to stay there. When I left her in North Carolina, she made sure that I’ll stay in the Manor. I just agreed so she’ll let me go but I don’t really have a plan to stay there—not until I have enough shreds of evidence that will point to Uncle Rick.

“What did you tell her?” I asked, not meeting his eyes.

“I said I asked you to stay with me. She said she’ll visit you with Rick maybe next month.”

I didn’t try to hide my annoyance. Just merely mentioning that prick sends a rush of rage in me.

“You know that you can’t avoid him forever, Aki. They’ll soon get married.”

“I can’t even believe Mom wanted to marry the conman.” I gritted my teeth. Bile rises to my throat I can taste bitterness in my mouth.

“I don’t mean to rub salt on your wounds but your Dad and Kirian were long gone, don’t you want Georgina to be happy? I guess it’s also time for you to move on.”

I put the mug down on the table so hard I thought the glass table will break. Chocolate spilled but I’m too infuriated to apologize.

“Move on? My brother’s death is no accident. They didn’t found the one who beat him to death and the one who burned my grandmother alive. I’m sure that Rick has something to do with it.”

“Okay, what do you think, praytell, is Rick’s motive for him to do such horrible things? He’s your Dad’s best friend. He’s the one who looked over the three of you when your Dad passed. He even saved your Company.”

“He has all the reasons to. He wanted my Mom and my Dad’s fortune. What else it would be?”

Kori shrugged. He looked like he’s not convinced and perhaps thought that I’m just being a bitch about my Mom’s engagement. I let out a sigh of defeat and stomped to the second level of his house and made sure to bang the guest room’s door.

I took a hot shower, letting the water scald my skin. No one believed my theories—not even Mom. I heard Rick talking about my brother’s death. I tried to tell Mom but she dismissed me. He made her think that I’m just in shock at the things that happened. The fucker even suggested me going into rehab.

“Where did you put the boy?” Rick asked on the phone.

He locked me into my room after Mom passed out. He’s in Dad’s office, sitting pertly on Dad’s swivel chair.

“Don’t let him go. Did you make sure that the old hag was burned to death? I fucking told you to make sure that the other boy is in there, too! Explain now because the little shit is fucking here!”

I accidentally knocked the vase down behind me, making Rick turn towards the slightly ajar door. I run to the stair just before he went out of the office and found Hendery, Mom’s Persian cat near the vase.

“Damn it, you scared the shit out of me.” he kicked the cat that made it flying down the stairs.

I covered my mouth with my hands to prevent me from shouting. He planned it all. He wanted to kill me and my brother.

When I went out of the bathroom, I found Lucas casually sprawled on my bed. He’s still wearing the school’s varsity jacket.

“What the fuck are you doing here?” I asked in annoyance as I continue drying my hair with the towel.

I turned around and pulled sweatpants in the cabinet.

“I’m here to fetch your sorry ass.” He answered as he sucks on his lollipop.

“Where are we going?”

“To Luna’s house, remember? Kori said you’re depressed so being the best of all friends I am, I came here to pick you up.”

“I need to sleep. I’m tired. Tell Luna she can have my credit card for a day when we meet.” I discarded the towels on the bathroom sink and pushed Lucas off the bed.

“Damn you and your money, man. Are you really leaving me alone with the girls?”

I raised a brow at him as I took a cigarette from the drawer.

“Don’t you like it? You can have a group orgy with them.” I puffed a smoke, filling the room with the smell of nicotine.

“I’m loyal with my girlfriend, besides, Roux’s kind of untouchable.”

“Roux’s coming?”

“Uh-huh. I’m going to pick her up but decided to go to you first just in case I’ll need a backup.”

Without a second thought, I grab a shirt and hoody and raced with Lucas to his Audi.
