The instant I entered my room, the light switched on. There she appeared.

Lila. Positioned and bearing that grin I had learned to dread. She applauded gradually, intentionally, as though directing a spectacle. Then her laughter followed, piercing and malevolent reverberating against the walls of my chamber.

“So " she started, tilting her head "you actually had the nerve to leave this house and head to a club… dressed like a prostitute. I was certain of it. You and Maya were definitely plotting something. You reek of alcohol." She prowled around me like a predator. "I’m curious about what mom and dad will say once they discover the truth.”

My heart dropped. I recoiled, my eyes staring in shock. "L-Lila… please I’m begging you. Don’t inform Mom and Dad. I only wanted some fun. I just wanted to experience life. If Mum learns about this… she will be furious!”

Lila chuckled more a noise that churned my insides. "Do I seem like I care Zara? I want you out of here. Dead if possible. I don't give a fuck about you.”

Fear and hopelessness overwhelmed me. My legs gave way and I collapsed to the ground crying uncontrollably. "Lila… please! I know you’re not serious. Please… show me some mercy. I’m ready to do whatever it takes. Please… don’t inform Mom and Dad!”

She ceased her circling. Lowered herself a bit, her eyes sparkling with wicked delight. Then she grinned. Gradually. Sinister.

“Hand over your jade pendant " she demanded, her tone quiet and piercing, slicing through my heart like steel.

A lump formed in my throat. "What?! No… I can’t Lila. This… this is the thing that connects me to my biological parents. You can request anything but not that.”

Lila chuckled more a sharp piercing noise. "Your actual parents, huh? So that means Mum and Dad are impostors, correct?" Her voice was laced with malice. "If you don’t hand over that jade pendant now, prepare to bury yourself.”

My hands shook while I held the pendant, its smooth crescent form warmed by twenty-two years against my skin. My tears streamed rapidly than before. The sole reminder that I had ever been part of a place, the sign of affection of existence beyond this home… and now I had to let it go.

I stifled a sob. Gently unfastened it, handing it over into her outstretched hand.

“Useless " she muttered with a frosty chuckle tucking it into her pocket. Then silently she spun around. Walked away her steps ringing out like a funeral procession.

That evening I wept myself to slumber, holding tight to the place, on my chest where my pendant had forever sat.

The morning I awoke I felt a sudden jolt on my back.

“Ahhh!" I yelled, the agony slicing through me. I scarcely had a moment to process it before it struck more; a lash, sharp and merciless. My eyes snapped open. The sight caused my heart to sink: Mom, Dad, and Lila looming above me with sinister grins.

“You actually had the nerve to visit a club?" Mom yelled, her tone filled with venom. "You’re rude, thankless, and utterly brazen!”

Before I managed to utter a word before any tears could fall the whip struck more. Agony blazed across my back and I crumpled to the ground my flesh aflame, with heat. Each strike forced me to wail, choke, yearning for the earth to engulf me.

They kept going.

Once the assault ceased I was hauled down the stairs thrown against the moist basement walls and locked in. My stomach ached with hunger, my throat parched from thirst. No nourishment. No drink. Just. Hopelessness. I lay my cheek on the floor, my chest heaving as I longed and prayed for death to arrive.

Within the depths of that darkness a single thought cut through: Lila. She deceived me. After seizing the one important thing, she still turned me in.

Time slipped by. The gloom thickened, nearly palpable. Suddenly the basement door groaned open. My heart rate surged.

“Zara…" uttered a harsh tone.

Lila. And this time, she wasn’t alone.

Her best friend, Sonia was positioned behind her grinning.

“You’re truly a fool " Lila remarked, walking back and forth slowly "Did you honestly believe I’d let you go that easily?”

"She’s miserable " Sonia remarked, crossing her arms. "Attempting to replace you in your parents’ lives. How sad."

I retreated, trembling. "Return my pendant, you witch!" I yelled, tears flowing down my cheeks.

“That pendant will never be yours again " Lila stated icily. Afterwards, they both chuckled harshly abandoning me to solitude in the shadows again.

I closed my eyes, holding my knees close and swaying gently. My heart hurt, my body. My soul… my soul seemed utterly broken.

The night seemed to go on without end. Each noise, the groan of the house, the far-off murmur of cars felt amplified in the quiet of the basement. I murmured into the space repeatedly. Why do I exist? Why me?

“Help! Help! Don’t touch me!!!”She shouted at the top of her lungs. The scream tore through the jet like a knife. For a second, everything just stopped. My heart stopped beating.“What the—” I started, but my voice failed me.The door burst open instantly.Sebastian walked in, and Adrian was behind him. Two flight attendants followed them.Everything happened so fast, it did not even feel real.Elena stumbled backward, her body shaking like she had just been through something horrible. Tears streamed down her face, her chest rising and falling rapidly as she pointed at me.“She tried to hurt me!” she cried, her voice trembling perfectly. “She locked the door and came at me!”My stomach dropped.“What?!” I gasped, my eyes wide with disbelief. “That’s not true!”Sebastian’s gaze snapped to me.Cold, furious, and terrifying.“Zara…” he said slowly.“No, Sebastian, listen to me…”“I walked in, and she was already aggressive,” Elena continued, cutting me off, her voice breaking as if she

“We should get going,” Elena suddenly said, her voice sharp as it cut through the tension in the room.Without waiting for a response, she picked up her bag and walked towards the door.Of course, we all followed. The drive to Sebastian’s private hangar was really quiet. No one spoke; the air in the car felt very heavy and suffocating.I sat by the window, staring out, trying not to think too much about what I was getting myself into.A trip to South Africa with Sebastian, Elena, and Adrian.I knew this was not going to end well. When we arrived, my breath caught in my throat.Sebastian’s private jet stood there like something out of a movie. It was sleek, massive, fucking expensive, and intimidating.Everything about it screamed wealth and power.I couldn’t help it.A soft gasp escaped my lips. How much money does this man really have?“Elena, Adrian,” Sebastian said as he stepped forward. “Let’s board.”As we walked up the stairs, I felt small, like I didn’t belong in this world.“I

It has been two weeks since I told Sebastian what I found out about Elena at the hospital. Two long and hard weeks.Nothing had changed. If anything, things had gotten even worse.Sebastian barely talked to me unless he had to. When he did talk to me, his voice was cold and distant… like I was nothing more than someone taking up space in his life. Maya had finally been discharged from the hospital. The first time I saw her standing on her own again, looking a bit like herself, I almost cried. She was still getting better-both physically and emotionally. She was stronger than I had ever seen her. There was a strength in her now, maybe the whole situation had changed something in her.—“Pack your things,” Sebastian had said that morning, his voice flat as he adjusted his golden Rolex watch. “I'm going on a business trip to South Africa, tomorrow. You’re coming with me.”I blinked at him, surprised."Me?" I asked him."Yes, " he said. "You are my wife."His words did not sound warm or

It was Elena. For a moment, I thought I was seeing things. But then I saw him.He was standing right next to her. He seemed nervous, like he was pondering over something.Adrian.Sebastian’s right-hand man.My heart skipped a beat. What were they doing at the hospital? The hospital suddenly felt too tight. It felt like the walls were closing in on me. My mind started racing, and I tried to make sense of what I was seeing.Elena.Adrian.Together.Here.I took a small step forward, my instincts screaming at me to go closer, to hear something—anything—but then—“Maya!”The sound of her coughing echoed in my head.I snapped back to reality, turned immediately, and ran down the hallway.“Doctor! Please!” I called out, my voice shaking.Within seconds, the doctor and Maya’s mom rushed in. Machines were beeping loudly, the nurses moved quickly, and I stood there helplessly as they worked on her.“Please stabilize her,” her mom kept saying, her voice breaking. After what felt like forever, M

I woke up slowly, my body heavy, my mind feeling even heavier. For a moment, I did not remember where I was. Then I saw him.Sebastian was standing across the room, already dressed in a black suit, fastening his cufflinks as if nothing were wrong. Like night didn't happen. Like I didn't exist."Last night was something, huh?" he said casually, not even looking at me.Something inside me just snapped."Really?" I said, sitting up in bed, my voice shaking with anger. "Is that all you have to say? Why are my things even here? You're just a bipolar piece of shit.”The room got really quiet.Slowly, he turned to face me."Enough " he said coldly. "Don't think that just because we fucked last night, you can insult me."His eyes got really dark."Don't test me, Zara. Know your place."My chest felt really tight."Besides," he added, fixing his Rolex watch "you’re my wife. You’ll be staying in my room from now on."And just like that, he walked out.Like nothing was wrong.Like, it did not ma

Sebastian finally spoke.“I’ve known Elena since we were kids,” he said slowly. “Elena is my first love… my first girlfriend. She just got back from Switzerland. She is here to expand her family’s business.”He paused, his jaw tightening.“She is part of this family,” he said.Something inside me broke.I stared at him, my ears ringing, my chest feeling tight like I could not breathe properly.“What do you mean… part of this family?” My voice came out shaky, but there was anger buried inside it. “You disappear to God knows where and you come back with this…”He cut me off.“How dare you,” he said. His voice was like a slap.My words stopped instantly.“How dare you question me?” he continued, his tone cold. “You seem to be forgetting your place, Zara.”His eyes got darker as he took a step closer.“You are nothing but my property, Zara,” he said. The words hurt me.I am not his wife. Not his partner. Not a person to him.Just… something he owned.I felt my throat tighten, my eyes burn
