Kyle's POV

The hospital room was dark when I got back.

Just one lamp. The small one by the bed. Casting that particular yellow glow that made everything look sicker than it was.

I closed the door. The click echoed.

My clothes were still damp. Not soaking. But damp enough to be uncomfortable. The shirt clung to my back. My pants felt heavy. My socks squelched slightly in my shoes.

I should change.

The ring box sat in my jacket pocket. I could feel it. That small weight. Pressing against my ribs with each breath.

I shouldn't have brought it.

The thought had repeated itself the entire drive back. James silent in the front seat. Me in the back. Watching the city lights blur past the window.

I pulled the box out now. Velvet. Dark blue. Small enough to fit in my palm.

Opened it.

The diamond caught the lamplight. Threw it back in fractured pieces. Yellow and white. Dancing across the ceiling. Across the walls.

The smaller stones arranged around it like stars. Like the pendant I'd given her w

  • The Unwanted Wife and Her Secret Twins   Chapter 504 They're coming

Mia's POV"Okay," I said. My voice came out strange. Thick. "Okay. Bath time.""But we just got HOME—""You all smell like hospital.""What does hospital smell like?" Alexander asked, not moving from his position on the floor, his face still approximately two inches from Gas's nose."Sadness," I said. "And floor cleaner. And that weird soup they kept trying to make us eat.""That soup WAS weird. It was like—like someone put water and disappointment in a bowl and called it food.""Hence. Bath.""Hence is a weird word.""Alexander.""Going, going."The bathroom was small. With all three children crammed into the tub, with steam fogging the mirror and water sloshing dangerously close to the edge.Alexander had claimed the faucet end. He always claimed the faucet end—said it was the "captain's seat". His back was pressed against the porcelain, his knees poking up out of the water

  • The Unwanted Wife and Her Secret Twins   Chapter 503 The world hadn't ended

Mia's POVThe apartment smelled something familiar. The lavender of the diffuser I'd left running in the living room. The faint, stubborn sweetness of the cookies Alexander had baked last week, burned on the edges, still somehow lingering in the kitchen walls. The woolly, animal warmth that meant Gas.I stood in the doorway and let the smell of it wash over me.Alexander pushed past me first. "We're HOME!" he announced. "WE'RE HOME AND DADDY'S ALIVE!"His voice bounced off the walls. Off the family photos in the hallway—the one from last Christmas where Ethan was mid-sneeze, the one from Madison's adoption day where we were all crying and smiling at once. Off the coatrack with its tangle of scarves and jackets, the top hook still holding the raincoat I'd been meaning to donate for six months. The lights came on. One by one. The living room with the blanket still bunched on the couch where Madison had been sitting when I told them we were goin

Mia's POVAlexander's sneaker squeaked against the linoleum. "Daddy?"Kyle's hand lifted off the blanket. Slow. The IV tube trailing behind it like a leash. His fingers found Alexander's hair.Alexander climbed. His knee caught the bed rail. His elbow jabbed into Kyle's hip. The heart monitor spiked.Alexander's face pressed into Kyle's shoulder. The hospital gown bunched under his cheek, the fabric dotted with small blue diamonds, the kind of pattern. Alexander's fingers found the edge of the gown and twisted. Held."You woke up." The words were muffled. Wet. "You woke up you woke up you woke up—"Kyle's hand moved in Alexander's hair. Once. Twice. His eyes were closed again. At the foot of the bed, Ethan stood."Ethan." Kyle's voice was rough. Sandpaper on wood."Come here, Ethan."Kyle's hand extended. Palm up. The IV line stretched. The needle shifted under the tape. The seconds stretched. I could hear Alexander's breathing. I could hear the fluorescent light buzzing overhead. I co

  • The Unwanted Wife and Her Secret Twins   Chapter 501 Kyle, can you hear me?

Mia's POVWe took the elevator back up. Madison pressed the button. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.The doors opened. The hallway was quiet. It was always quiet on this floor. The ICU had a particular quality of silence—not empty, but muffled. Held. Like the building itself was holding its breath.I pushed the door open.Alexander was still standing by the bed. Still talking. His voice had gone hoarse now, scratchy at the edges, but he hadn't stopped."—and then the dragon said, 'I'm not scary, I'm just misunderstood,' and the princess said, 'Well, you should work on your communication skills,' and the dragon said—"He stopped when he saw us."Madison, you're back. I'm telling Daddy about the dragon and the princess. Do you want to help? You can be the princess voice. I'm doing the dragon voice."Madison walked to the sofa. Sat down. Pulled Eleanor against her chest."Maybe later," she said."Okay." Alexander turned back to Kyle. "Madison says maybe later. She's shy. But she'll do the princess voice e

  • The Unwanted Wife and Her Secret Twins   Chapter 500 Day Three

Mia's POV"Daddy, wake up."Alexander's voice was small. Not the usual Alexander voice. He was standing on his tiptoes, his chin resting on the edge of the hospital bed, his fingers curled around the metal railing. The bed was too high for him. He'd dragged a chair over earlier, but he preferred standing. Said it made him feel closer."Mama says if you leave us like this again, she'll never forgive you."The ventilator hissed. A soft, rhythmic sound. In. Out. In. Out.I didn't correct him. I hadn't said those exact words. But I hadn't not said them either. The monitors beeped. Steady. Green lines moving across black screens in patterns. Heart rate: 62. Oxygen: 97. Blood pressure: 118/76. Numbers that meant alive. Numbers that didn't mean awake.Kyle's face was slack. That was the word the nurse had used. Slack."I learned a new word today," Alexander continued. He was tracing patterns on the blanket with his finger. Circles. Squares. A lopsided star. "Ethan taught me. It's called 'com

  • The Unwanted Wife and Her Secret Twins   Chapter 499 I Pray

Mia's POVThe family lounge was too bright. That was the thing about hospitals—they never let you forget where you were. The fluorescent lights hummed overhead, casting everything in that flat, shadowless glare that made everyone look slightly ill. Even Sophie, with her perfect makeup and her Hermès scarf, looked washed out. Gray around the edges.Madison was asleep against my shoulder. Her breath came slow and even, warm against my neck. She'd been asleep for almost an hour now, her small body heavy with the particular weight of exhausted children."Coffee?"Thomas's voice. Low. Careful. He was holding a paper cup, steam rising from the surface.I shook my head.He sat down anyway. Not next to me—there wasn't room, with Madison sprawled across half the couch—but close. Close enough that I could smell the coffee, dark and bitter, cutting through the nothing-smell of the hospital air."You should eat something," he said."I'm fine."He didn't respond. Just sat there, holding his coffe
