Chapter 2

ผู้เขียน: Seren
The elders froze, then rushed forward to help me up.

"Bella, what happened? You're the witch beloved and revered by the entire pack."

"If you're ill, rest and recover. We'll handle things. Don't speak of stepping down so lightly."

"There's no point in trying to talk me out of it." I pulled away from his hand, my voice firm.

"I have no power left. Staying in this position will only make me a burden."

"The pack can't be without a witch. Please, choose a successor as soon as possible."

I didn't waste more breath. Amid the elders' sighs, I walked out of the hall.

Back home, I had just lain down to rest when the door was pushed open.

It was Hall.

He shut the stone door behind him and came to the bedside, looking down at me, his voice thick with disappointment:

"Bella, there's no one else here. Why keep up the act with me?"

"Do you have any idea the Council is in chaos right now? They're saying without you presiding over the ceremony, Kylie's claim to Luna isn't legitimate."

He sat down on the edge of the bed, watching me coldly:

"Years ago, when my father died in battle and the pack was teetering on the edge, you promised him on his deathbed that you'd do everything to support me."

"And now, when Kylie needs you to stand up and legitimize her, you resign the night before the binding, making a spectacle for the elders. Isn't that just making them question my authority?"

"Bella, you're the head witch. You've always put the pack first. How did you become this petty?"

Listening to his interrogation, my stomach churned.

Back when the pack was surrounded by enemies and the old Alpha fell in battle, the whole pack was on the brink of death.

I risked my life, holding the barrier for seven days and seven nights straight, and carried the pack through.

And Hall smoothly became Alpha.

It cost me dearly. My power was devastated, and I was left with a body full of old wounds.

And now he was using that promise from back then to accuse me of not caring about the big picture.

I felt nothing but absurdity.

I lowered my head and didn't argue a single word.

In this life, I'd already learned: there's no point debating a man whose eyes are blinded.

Seeing my silence, Hall's anger faded a little.

He stood up, his tone softening:

"Bella, I know you feel wronged, but everything has to come second to the pack."

"The Council hasn't approved your resignation yet. The staff stays with them for now."

"Rest well tonight. As long as you show up tomorrow morning and give Kylie the blessing, I'll pretend none of this ever happened."

With that, he didn't push further. He shut the door softly and left.

The footsteps faded. I collapsed on the bed, my unease growing by the second.

Too smooth.

I'd taken poison, dodged the divination, even gone to the Council to resign.

Through all of it, Kylie hadn't lifted a finger to stop me.

That wasn't her style.

A woman who'd do anything to get what she wanted, how could she just let me slip away this easily?

Then a horrifying thought crashed into my mind.

Ignoring the poison's pain, I scrambled off the bed and stumbled down to the basement.

The basement door was ajar. The barrier I'd set was already broken.

My hands shaking, I opened the hidden compartment. Empty.

The crystal ball passed down through generations of witches was gone.

My heart dropped. Cold sweat poured down my back.

The crystal ball still carried traces of my aura.

If Kylie stole it, she must be planning to use it to cause a disaster and frame me.

Then the elders would think I'd planned rebellion all along, which is why I resigned.

And Hall would believe her without question.

With witnesses and evidence stacked against me, even if I swore my power was gone, I'd have no defense.

I dragged my weak body up the basement stairs, trembling.

Fine. Then I'd go further.

I'd build myself an alibi with absolutely no room for doubt.

I opened the cabinet, boiled down every last drop of poison, and drank it all.

Agony tore through me. Clinging to the last thread of consciousness, I crawled all the way to Elder Rowan's room.

As long as he could testify that I'd spent the whole night fighting for my life.

As long as enough people knew the crystal ball wasn't in my hands.

Then Kylie's scheme would collapse on itself.

"Help me..."

I crashed through the door. The last thing I saw was Elder Rowan's horrified face, then everything went black.

Looking at that horrifying face, terror surged through me.While she wasn't looking, I pulled the cross from my sleeve and hurled it at her chest. The cross struck her and hissed out a wisp of white smoke. But the next second, Kylie just sneered, swatted it to the ground, and crushed it underfoot."You think a piece of junk like that can stop me?"She looked down at me, her eyes full of mockery:"Bella. You ruined my plan. If the binding had gone through, I would've taken control of the whole pack, just like that.""But no. It had to be you. You'd rather destroy yourself than let me have my way.""Since you're so eager to die, I'll kill you first."She bared her fangs and lunged straight for my throat.Once, I could have held my own against a vampire of her level. But now, in this broken body, there was no way to dodge.I closed my eyes and waited for death.Out of the darkness, a wolf's howl exploded overhead!Hall was back.He was covered in blood, a Frostbloom still clutched in his

In my sleep, hurried footsteps cut through the silence.Elder Rowan's door was shoved open.I opened my eyes and strained to look toward the doorway. It was Hall.He came to my bedside and spoke softly:"It's all been cleared up... Mary did it, on Kylie's orders.""Bella, I was wrong. I'll clear your name in front of the whole pack, and I'll make it up to you after this is over.""Please. Forgive me. Please."The room was dead silent. The heavy scent of herbs drifted through the curtain.A long moment passed before I finally spoke, my voice utterly flat."Hall. As Alpha, it's your duty to pull the pack out of crisis.""As for whether I forgive you, that's between you and the Moon Goddess.""Go. I'm tired. Don't disturb my rest."Hall stood frozen by the bed, pain and regret filling his eyes.He didn't leave. Instead he reached for the corner of my blanket, then pulled his hand back in midair."Bella, I went to the Moon Spring. I asked the Moon Goddess through the staff...""The oracle

Hall's POVIn the forbidden chamber, Mary confessed everything. She resented how long Bella had sat in the head witch's seat.Long enough that she had no idea when her own turn would ever come.So when Kylie came to her, promising to lift her up the moment Bella was gone, she agreed without a second thought. It was Mary who stole the crystal ball while Bella wasn't looking. It was Mary who used the spells Bella had taught her to butcher the three elders. Then she left the bloodstained crystal ball at the scene and hid the forged letters under Bella's bed. After that, all it would take was Kylie fanning the flames, and Hall would send Bella to the stake without hesitation.Reading the confession the guards handed him, Hall slumped into the stone chair, shaking from head to toe.He couldn't bear to imagine it. Kylie. The woman he'd given his heart to, the one he'd favored unconditionally, was this vicious. And Bella had sensed the danger again and again, fighting to warn him, and every t

"Enough. All of you, stop talking!"Hall stepped in front of Kylie, his voice laced with anger. But a split second later, a flicker of fear crossed his bloodshot eyes. The whole pack went silent with terror, the air filled only with heavy, ragged breathing.Hall walked toward me, step by step. With every step, his body trembled uncontrollably.Elder Rowan planted himself in front of me, pleading desperately:"Alpha! She's dying! Let her go!"Hall said nothing. He simply reached out one hand and pushed Elder Rowan aside. Then he looked at me, his eyes full of guilt."Bella...""Why... why would you hurt yourself like this..."The scenes from yesterday spun through his mind like a carousel.Yesterday, when Bella, the witch who had done so much for this pack, begged him, what was he doing? He was mocking her. Interrogating her. He'd assumed it was all an act to keep Kylie from becoming Luna."Why didn't you say so sooner... Why didn't you explain a single word!"Hall let out a pained roar

The cloak fell away, and my body was exposed, hideous wounds everywhere. The meridians that once flowed with power were now shriveled and purple, utterly lifeless. No one could believe a dying woman like this had the strength to assassinate council elders."Everyone, calm down. Listen to me!"Elder Rowan struggled to his feet and planted himself in front of me.His eyes were red as he jabbed a finger at Hall and shouted:"Bella was poisoned twice in a single day!""The first was in the morning. It devastated her power. The second was at dusk. It nearly killed her.""I worked all night to barely pull her back!"He turned to face the entire pack:"In other words, she lost the ability to use witchcraft long ago. So how exactly did she sneak into the Council Hall and murder battle-hardened elders?!"Everyone went quiet.Even Hall's brow furrowed, doubt creeping in.Elder Rowan had served the pack loyally his whole life, revered and respected. He would never lie about something like this.A

The darkness broke with the sting of herbs in my nose. The moment I drew breath, pain knifed through my chest.Elder Rowan sat at my bedside, exhaustion etched into his face.Seeing me awake, he let out a long sigh."Thank the gods, you're alive. We nearly lost you.""But the poison went too deep. I'm afraid... you'll never use witchcraft again."I forced the corner of my mouth up. Even speaking drained me."The room's too close. Bad for clearing the poison. Let me help you out to the back garden for some air."He wrapped a heavy cloak around me and, supporting me, settled me onto the stone bench outside. We'd barely sat down when urgent bells rang out.Dong! Dong! Dong!Mournful. Piercing. Nine tolls in all.My heart dropped.Nine tolls of the death bell meant a council elder had been murdered.Elder Rowan's face went pale. The medicine bowl nearly slipped from his hand:"No, something's happened at the Council!"Then came the chaos of footsteps from every direction.Dozens of guards
