Chapter 1

I had just swallowed the potion when a searing bitterness tore through my throat.

Before I could even catch my breath, the door swung open.

Alpha Hall walked in with a squad of guards at his back, and the new Luna, Kylie, trailed behind him like a delicate little bird.

"Bella. Go open the Moon Spring."

"Tomorrow is my binding ceremony with Kylie. I want you to perform the divination and the blessing for her."

My lips twisted. My body wouldn't stop trembling.

Memories from my last life slammed into me all at once.

I didn't speak. I just lifted my hands with effort.

My once-fair arms were now mottled with large black spots.

"Forgive me, Alpha."

I knelt low, my voice hoarse and broken.

"I've been poisoned. My power is drained. I can't do divination anymore."

The room went dead silent.

Hall stared at my hands, disbelief written all over his face.

Then his expression turned to stone.

"You think putting on a show like this will fool me? You think you can threaten me into calling off the binding?"

"You've been biased against Kylie from the start, nitpicking her at every turn! And now, to stop her from becoming Luna, you're pulling even this?"

"What, you think the pack can't hold a binding ceremony without its witch?"

Listening to his accusations, I felt nothing but absurdity.

Back then, Kylie had broken taboo and trespassed into the Moon Spring, nearly contaminating the sacred water. I punished her by making her scrub the altar, by the rules.

She slipped out of the pack on her own and colluded with rogue wolves. I caught her and dragged her back.

I was upholding the pack's order. But in Hall's eyes, it was all just me being cruel to Kylie.

In the past, I would have fought tooth and nail to explain myself.

But in this life, I just wanted to survive.

"Mercy, Alpha! I'm truly broken. My power is gone. I'm no longer fit to be this pack's witch, and I wouldn't dare show the slightest disrespect to the Luna!"

"Please, just let me go!"

Hall froze.

He'd probably never seen the once-proud head witch, revered by the entire pack, reduced to such a pathetic state.

He frowned, his voice dripping with reproach:

"Bella, you know better than anyone how much this binding ceremony matters to the pack. If Kylie doesn't receive the Moon Goddess's blessing, every wolf will look down on her, accuse her of taking the position illegitimately."

"Do you really want the new Luna to face controversy the moment she rises? Do you want to watch the pack descend into chaos?"

"Even if you have your reservations about Kylie, you should put the pack first. How can you throw a tantrum like this the day before the ceremony?"

A hand stopped Hall.

It was Kylie.

She tugged weakly at Hall's sleeve, her eyes welling up:

"Hall, don't blame the witch. It's my fault. My bloodline isn't noble enough. I don't deserve the Moon Goddess's blessing."

"If Bella isn't well, then let's not force it. Even without divination and blessing at the binding, as long as I can stay by your side, I'll take all the gossip in stride."

Hall's face darkened further, but looking at me, crumpled on the floor, he couldn't find the words.

He stroked Kylie's hair, soothing her.

Then he shot me a glare and turned to leave.

The door clicked shut. Silence swallowed the room again.

I slumped against the cold wall, my clothes soaked through with sweat.

In my last life, Kylie had colluded with someone to frame me in advance. She'd wrapped a battle-hardened Alpha like Hall around her little finger.

Her cunning had to be beyond anything ordinary.

I'd dodged the divination today, but with Kylie's methods, she would never just let it go.

As long as I held the witch's position, she would find a way to destroy me.

The thought sent a fresh shudder through my body.

The terror of burning alive clawed its way back up.

I grabbed the staff passed down through generations of witches and, dragging my weak body, made my way to the Council Hall.

I pushed the door open. Several elders were going over the details of tomorrow's ceremony. They froze at the sight of my ashen face.

I lowered my head, placed the staff on the table, and showed them the black spots on my arm. My voice came out strained:

"Elders, I ingested a poisonous herb by mistake. My power is gone. I can't divine anymore."

"Tomorrow's ceremony is critical. Bella begs to resign her post, so I don't hold back the new Luna's ascension."

"Please, choose someone else as the new witch."

Looking at that horrifying face, terror surged through me.While she wasn't looking, I pulled the cross from my sleeve and hurled it at her chest. The cross struck her and hissed out a wisp of white smoke. But the next second, Kylie just sneered, swatted it to the ground, and crushed it underfoot."You think a piece of junk like that can stop me?"She looked down at me, her eyes full of mockery:"Bella. You ruined my plan. If the binding had gone through, I would've taken control of the whole pack, just like that.""But no. It had to be you. You'd rather destroy yourself than let me have my way.""Since you're so eager to die, I'll kill you first."She bared her fangs and lunged straight for my throat.Once, I could have held my own against a vampire of her level. But now, in this broken body, there was no way to dodge.I closed my eyes and waited for death.Out of the darkness, a wolf's howl exploded overhead!Hall was back.He was covered in blood, a Frostbloom still clutched in his

In my sleep, hurried footsteps cut through the silence.Elder Rowan's door was shoved open.I opened my eyes and strained to look toward the doorway. It was Hall.He came to my bedside and spoke softly:"It's all been cleared up... Mary did it, on Kylie's orders.""Bella, I was wrong. I'll clear your name in front of the whole pack, and I'll make it up to you after this is over.""Please. Forgive me. Please."The room was dead silent. The heavy scent of herbs drifted through the curtain.A long moment passed before I finally spoke, my voice utterly flat."Hall. As Alpha, it's your duty to pull the pack out of crisis.""As for whether I forgive you, that's between you and the Moon Goddess.""Go. I'm tired. Don't disturb my rest."Hall stood frozen by the bed, pain and regret filling his eyes.He didn't leave. Instead he reached for the corner of my blanket, then pulled his hand back in midair."Bella, I went to the Moon Spring. I asked the Moon Goddess through the staff...""The oracle

Hall's POVIn the forbidden chamber, Mary confessed everything. She resented how long Bella had sat in the head witch's seat.Long enough that she had no idea when her own turn would ever come.So when Kylie came to her, promising to lift her up the moment Bella was gone, she agreed without a second thought. It was Mary who stole the crystal ball while Bella wasn't looking. It was Mary who used the spells Bella had taught her to butcher the three elders. Then she left the bloodstained crystal ball at the scene and hid the forged letters under Bella's bed. After that, all it would take was Kylie fanning the flames, and Hall would send Bella to the stake without hesitation.Reading the confession the guards handed him, Hall slumped into the stone chair, shaking from head to toe.He couldn't bear to imagine it. Kylie. The woman he'd given his heart to, the one he'd favored unconditionally, was this vicious. And Bella had sensed the danger again and again, fighting to warn him, and every t

"Enough. All of you, stop talking!"Hall stepped in front of Kylie, his voice laced with anger. But a split second later, a flicker of fear crossed his bloodshot eyes. The whole pack went silent with terror, the air filled only with heavy, ragged breathing.Hall walked toward me, step by step. With every step, his body trembled uncontrollably.Elder Rowan planted himself in front of me, pleading desperately:"Alpha! She's dying! Let her go!"Hall said nothing. He simply reached out one hand and pushed Elder Rowan aside. Then he looked at me, his eyes full of guilt."Bella...""Why... why would you hurt yourself like this..."The scenes from yesterday spun through his mind like a carousel.Yesterday, when Bella, the witch who had done so much for this pack, begged him, what was he doing? He was mocking her. Interrogating her. He'd assumed it was all an act to keep Kylie from becoming Luna."Why didn't you say so sooner... Why didn't you explain a single word!"Hall let out a pained roar

The cloak fell away, and my body was exposed, hideous wounds everywhere. The meridians that once flowed with power were now shriveled and purple, utterly lifeless. No one could believe a dying woman like this had the strength to assassinate council elders."Everyone, calm down. Listen to me!"Elder Rowan struggled to his feet and planted himself in front of me.His eyes were red as he jabbed a finger at Hall and shouted:"Bella was poisoned twice in a single day!""The first was in the morning. It devastated her power. The second was at dusk. It nearly killed her.""I worked all night to barely pull her back!"He turned to face the entire pack:"In other words, she lost the ability to use witchcraft long ago. So how exactly did she sneak into the Council Hall and murder battle-hardened elders?!"Everyone went quiet.Even Hall's brow furrowed, doubt creeping in.Elder Rowan had served the pack loyally his whole life, revered and respected. He would never lie about something like this.A

The darkness broke with the sting of herbs in my nose. The moment I drew breath, pain knifed through my chest.Elder Rowan sat at my bedside, exhaustion etched into his face.Seeing me awake, he let out a long sigh."Thank the gods, you're alive. We nearly lost you.""But the poison went too deep. I'm afraid... you'll never use witchcraft again."I forced the corner of my mouth up. Even speaking drained me."The room's too close. Bad for clearing the poison. Let me help you out to the back garden for some air."He wrapped a heavy cloak around me and, supporting me, settled me onto the stone bench outside. We'd barely sat down when urgent bells rang out.Dong! Dong! Dong!Mournful. Piercing. Nine tolls in all.My heart dropped.Nine tolls of the death bell meant a council elder had been murdered.Elder Rowan's face went pale. The medicine bowl nearly slipped from his hand:"No, something's happened at the Council!"Then came the chaos of footsteps from every direction.Dozens of guards
