Lyra's pov

I was silent for a moment as I tossed her words over and over in my head.

“Thank you for telling me. Do you know how this rumor started?”

She shook her head sadly.

With a sigh I told her my plans, “if that's the case then I guess I'll have to find that out on my own.”

With that, I turned to head out but her hand quickly shot out, grabbing my wrist firmly but not painfully.

Confused, I turned to look at her. “Lyra, I care for you but be careful. This doesn’t feel like mindless gossip, it feels planted.”

Her warning was… vague.

Before I could say anything, she walked out.

I kept replaying Arielle’s words in my head long after she left the closet, the small closet felt very suffocating at this point.

Her warning wasn’t one I could just brush aside. She was right. Gossip was one thing—cheap whispers that spread like wildfire but burned out just as quickly. But this? This rumor had a backbone because not just anyone would risk starting such a rumor that involved the nobles an

Celeste's povI was summoned to shadows fang two days after meeting Theron.I had kept him under guard in Moonstone while I sent urgent messages to Lyra and Ronan. The old man had been patient, spending his time reading in the guest quarters I had assigned him, never once complaining about the armed guards stationed outside his door. Now we gathered in Shadowfang's great library—a room I had never seen before, filled with ancient books and scrolls that smelled of dust and secrets. Lyra sat in a cushioned chair, her pregnancy now visible beneath her flowing gown. Ronan stood protectively behind her, one hand resting on her shoulder. King Aldric leaned against a bookshelf, his aged eyes sharp and assessing. And Theron stood before us all, looking far too calm for a man who claimed the world was in danger. He was ancient—truly ancient. His skin was wrinkles like old paper, his hair white as fresh snow, his hands gnarled with age. But his eyes were clear and bright, burning with an intell

  • The alpha king's slave mate   CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHTY THREE

Celeste's povI visited Lyra two days after she collapsed. I had to leave to attend to something in moonstone then return. The healers had confined her to bed rest something she was taking about as well as a caged wolf. When I entered her chambers, I found her sitting up against a mountain of pillows, glaring at a book she was clearly not reading."They will not let me do anything," she said by way of greeting. "Ronan hovers like I am made of glass. The healers check on me every hour. King Aldric keeps bringing me soup. I am pregnant, not dying."I could not help but smile. "They love you. Let them fuss.""It is suffocating." But her hand moved unconsciously to rest on her still-flat stomach, and her expression softened. "A baby. I still cannot believe it.""Conceived during the blood oath ritual," I said, settling into the chair beside her bed. "The healers say the magic and the mate bond combined. It is... extraordinary.""It is terrifying." Lyra's storm-gray eyes met mine. "I have

  • The alpha king's slave mate   CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHTY TWO

Celeste's povWe rode through the night without stopping. The horses were lathered with sweat by the time we reached Shadowfang's gates, their sides heaving, but none of us cared. The message had been clear: Kael was fading fast, asking for us, holding on through sheer will alone.I had not expected to care. After everything he had done, all the pain and horror and madness, I thought I would feel nothing but relief when he finally died. But as we thundered through the castle corridors toward the healing wing, my chest felt tight and my throat burned with unshed tears.Maybe it was because I remembered who he used to be. Or maybe it was because some part of me still loved the ghost of the boy I had known before the darkness consumed him.The healing room was dimly lit, the air thick with the scent of herbs and rot—decay, corruption, death approaching on silent feet. Kael lay in the center bed, barely recognizable. The shadow corruption had consumed most of his body, leaving his skin mo

  • The alpha king's slave mate   CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHTY ONE

Celeste's povThree days later, Moonstone's throne room looked almost normal. We'd worked tirelessly to cleanse the last traces of corruption. Lyra's light magic purged the lingering darkness from the stones. Servants scrubbed blood and ash from the floors. Workers repaired damaged walls and replaced shattered windows. It would never be what it was—too much had happened, too many had died. But it could be something new. Something better. Now, the room filled with people which consisted of moonstone nobles who'd survived, representatives from Shadowfang, common folk who'd fought through the darkness and even Mira, cleaned and fed and beginning to look human again, stood near the front.I stood before the throne, refusing to sit in it. That felt presumptuous and wrong. I wasn't a queen. Heck! I wasn't even sure I deserved to be a regent. But someone had to lead. Someone had to help these people rebuild.Lord Whitmore stepped forward, carrying a silver circlet—simple, elegant, not the he

Celeste's povThe castle's collapse stopped as suddenly as it began. We stood in the courtyard, gasping for breath, watching as the corruption drained from the stone like poison being leeched from a wound. The writhing shadows retreated, the twisted architecture straightened, and slowly—painfully—Moonstone Castle began to resemble itself again."It's over," Mira whispered beside me, her voice hollow with exhaustion. "She's really gone."I couldn't speak but only stare at my hands—still stained with Mother's black blood, still trembling from the weight of the sword I'd driven through her back.I'd killed her. My own mother. And the worst part?I felt relieved."Celeste." Lyra's hand on my shoulder pulled me back from the edge of whatever dark place my mind was spiraling toward. "Look."People were emerging from the castle. Servants, guards and nobles all moving slowly with uncertainly, like they'd just woken from a nightmare. The thralls—freed from Selene's control—stood blinking in th

  • The alpha king's slave mate   CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY NINE

Celeste's povThe throne room had become a cathedral to darkness.Reality bent and twisted around us as we entered. The ceiling stretched impossibly high, disappearing into swirling shadow. The floor rippled like water beneath our feet, though it remained solid. Pillars of corrupted stone writhed with carved faces—the servants and guards who'd been sacrificed, their agonized expressions preserved in dark magic. And there, seated on the throne that should have belonged to Kael, was my mother.Selene.But not as I remembered her. Death and resurrection had changed her. Her skin was paper-thin, stretched tight over bones, veins visible and pulsing with sickly green light. Her eyes glowed with the same light that kael's eyes had. She'd aged decades in mere weeks. But the power radiating from her was immense, suffocating. It pressed against my chest like someone was pushing on it."Ah, my disappointing daughter." Her voice not exactly hers as she spoke. "Come to stop me?"Around the thron
