Maia's pov

We walked until every corners of the forest turned quiet. Every step I took away from Ironclaw Keep made my chest ache less. I didn’t know where we were going, but for the first time in years, the path was mine to choose.

Elysia walked ahead of me, her braid brushing her back as she moved. She always had this calmness about her, even now when everything was falling apart. She looked back now and then, checking if I was keeping up. I tried to hide how tired I was, how heavy my legs felt. The bond’s break had left me weak, like my strength had been drained through whole.

“Maia,” she said softly, slowing her pace, “we should stop soon. You’re pale.”

“I’m fine,” I lied. My voice came out shaky. “We can’t stop yet. Not this close.”

She frowned. “No one’s following us.”

But I didn’t believe that. I could feel it.

We kept walking until we reached a stream cutting through the woods. The water was shallow and cold, running clear over smooth stones. Elysia filled our flasks and hande

  • The cursed mate's return    That night of betrayal

Maia's pov“Varek?” I called softly, pushing open his chamber door.No answer but I heard the sound of low breathing and the faint rustle of sheets.“Varek, we need to talk about the bond—”The words stopped in my throat.Selene’s laugh broke the silence first. Then I saw her.On his bed. Wrapped in his blanket. Her hands on his chest. For a moment, I couldn’t move. My heart stuttered. She turned her head, hair falling over her bare shoulder, and smiled when she saw me. “Oh. You’re back early.”Varek shot up, pulling the blanket around himself. “Maia....wait....this isn’t—”“Isn’t what?” My voice cracked. “What it looks like?”Selene’s smile widened. “He couldn’t sleep. The bond’s been… bothering him. I just offered a little comfort.”I stared at her. My step-sister. My blood. “You offered him comfort in my bed?”Varek stood, trying to come closer. “It wasn’t planned. The bond—”“The bond?” I laughed, a sharp, broken sound. “Don’t you dare blame the bond for this. You made a choice, V

Maia's pov“Stop looking at me like that,” I said.Varek leaned back against the table, arms crossed, eyes fixed on me. “Like what?”“Like you’re trying to read my mind.”“I don’t have to,” he said. “You’re angry. You’ve always been easy to read when you’re angry.”I gave a short laugh. “You lost the right to read anything about me the day you let them tear that bond apart.”His jaw tightened. “I did what I had to.”“No,” I said, stepping closer. “You did what was easiest. There’s a difference.”The air between us thickened. He didn’t move, didn’t look away. I hated how close we were — hated that my heart still reacted like it used to.“Why are you really here, Maia?” he asked quietly. “If this is just about the red moon, you could’ve sent a message. But you came yourself.”“Because messages don’t bleed,” I said. “And this curse does.”He blinked, caught off guard by the sharpness in my voice.I dropped my bag on the table, opening it to pull out a small vial. Inside, the liquid shimm

  • The cursed mate's return    The alpha's lost luna

Maia's pov“Stop right there!”The shout came before I even reached the gate. I froze, my boots sinking into the wet ground. Three guards stepped out with torches and swords in their hands.I lifted both hands slowly. “Easy. I’m not here to fight.”One of them squinted. “Who are you?”“My name’s Maia Wren.”The youngest one’s eyes went wide. “That can’t be. You were banished.”A small smile touched my lips. “Guess I didn’t stay gone.”They looked at each other, unsure what to do. One whispered, “Should we tell the Alpha?”“You should,” I said. “Tell him Maia’s come back.”He ran off toward the keep. The other two just stared at me like I was some kind of ghost. The rain started again. I could smell the pine trees, the wet earth, the smoke from the forge inside the walls. It all felt the same as when I left. But I wasn’t the same woman anymore. The gates opened with a groan, and I heard footsteps coming my way. I knew that walk even before I saw him.Varek.He stepped into the torchligh

Varek's pov“Move again and I’ll end it quick.”Seren’s voice cut through the rain, sharp and steady.Maia didn’t move. She was lying flat on the ground, her dress soaked, her hair plastered to her cheeks. The sword hovered inches from her chest.“I’m already dying,” Maia whispered. “Go on then.”Seren sneered. “You think I’ll feel sorry for you? You ruined everything. You turned him into someone I don’t even recognize.”Her boot pressed against Maia’s wrist, pinning her down.“I didn’t take him,” Maia said weakly. “He chose me.” she groaned in pains. That made Seren’s eyes darken. “He should’ve chosen me.”She raised her sword higher, both hands gripping it tight. “I waited years for him. You walked in and got what I bled for.”“Then you should be angry at him, not me.”“Oh, I am,” Seren hissed. “But I’ll start with you.”The blade trembled, ready to strike. Then Maia spoke again, voice shaking but calm. “If you’re going to kill me, let me ask one thing.”Seren hesitated, annoyed. “Sa

Varek's pov“She’s gone.”The words reached me before the messenger did. I didn’t believe it until I saw the look in his eyes.“Maia fled the keep,” he said, breathless. “With the healer. They crossed the west ridge before sunrise.”Something vanished inside me.I stood so fast my chair crashed against the stone floor. The council members flinched. No one dared speak.“Find her,” I said quietly. “And find whoever failed to stop her.”They scattered like frightened birds. The hall emptied, leaving only one person behind Seren Vale. She leaned against the pillar, lips curved in a smile too soft to be friendly.“She was never one of us,” she said. “You knew that, didn’t you?”I didn’t answer.“She was sweet, I’ll give her that,” Seren went on, circling slowly, her perfume thick in the air. “But love doesn’t keep a kingdom. Maybe it’s for the best. You can focus on your duty now.”My gaze snapped to her. “Careful what you say.”“I’m only being honest,” she replied, tilting her head. “She r
