Chapter #03

SIENNA POV

A quiet Italian restaurant.

“Dinner lang.” Yun ang usapan namin. No pressure. No expectations.

Naka-black turtleneck. Mas relaxed ang ayos. Pero elegant pa rin. Too elegant for someone na ayaw daw sa arranged marriage. Compatible kami.

“Right on time,” he said.

“You sound surprised.”

“I am. Most doctors I know are late.”

“Most CEOs I know cancel last minute.”

Napangiti siya. “Touché.”

The restaurant was quiet. Dim lights. Warm wood interiors. Walang masyadong tao. The kind of place na pinipili ng mga taong ayaw mapansin.

He ordered red wine. I asked for water. Ayaw kung uminom. Matagal na no'ng huli.

“So,” he started, swirling his glass. “Let’s get the small talk out of the way.”

I raised an eyebrow. “Ganito ka ba lagi?”

“Structured. Efficient. Predictable. Yes,” sagot niya, without missing a beat.

“Well… I’m not.”

“Exactly,” he said, looking straight at me. “Which is why this dinner is already unpredictable.”

My chest tightened. A small shift. Just enough for me to notice it.

He didn’t talk much about himself, but when he did, may sense of quiet depth. I learned he’s been CEO since 21 and now he's 34. Laki sa discipline. Mahigpit ang upbringing. Hindi daw siya marunong magpahinga. Unbelievable.

“Sounds exhausting,” I said.

“Is it?” he replied. “I’m starting to wonder.”

He turned the question on me. “What about you? Why medicine?”

I paused. Then, quietly, “Because I want to understand pain. Not just treat it.”

His gaze lingered on me. And in that silence… we understood something deeper.

After dessert, tahimik lang kaming dalawa. Comfortable kind of quiet.

“You know,” I murmured, looking out the window, “I thought this dinner would be a disaster.”

He tilted his head. “It still can be. We have ten minutes left.”

I laughed. Totoo. Minsan dry ang humor niya. Pero tonight… it worked.

“Salamat,” I said. “For keeping it light.”

“Salamat din,” he replied. “For being honest. By the way na inform kana sa kasal?”

Matipid akong tumango. “I said, I do. Don't worry.”

Ngumisi siya. “I expect.”

Galing din ‘no. Ganito ba kami pag magkasama na kami? Sa bagay, ano bang in-expect ko. The busy CEO.

About sa kasal and before kasal. I'm not interested but… sumabay nalang ako.

“Tingin mo,” he asked suddenly, “if we weren’t arranged, would you have noticed me?”

I blinked. Then slowly answered, “No. You’re not the type I usually fall for.”

His lips curled slightly. “Good.”

“Why?”

“Because I’m not here to make you fall. I just want to stay… long enough for you to decide.”

Nagpangiti ako sa sagot niya. Gusto ko ang mga sagot niya. Prangka. Walang paligoy-ligoy.

“See you,” aniya bago umalis.

I stared at the ceiling… nag iisip.

I wondered if arranged marriages were always this complicated. Or if he was just the exception to everything I thought I knew.

Three days after the dinner with Dorian.

Sunday.

Tahimik palagi dito. Parang oras na lang ang humihinga.

Binalikan ko na naman siya.

Kahit alam kong walang magbabago. Kahit alam kong wala namang sasagot.

Ilang taon na mula nung sinagot niya akong “Wait for me, okay?” bago siya sumabak sa isang charity mission out of town.

Wala lang “us.”

Binuksan ko ang pinto.

Still the same.

White walls. Monitors softly beeping. The scent of disinfectant and longing mixed in the air.

Lying there. Peaceful. Too peaceful. As if the world hasn’t missed him. As if I haven’t.

“Hi, Honey,” I whispered, placing the flowers on the small glass vase beside your bed. “Pasensya na, medyo natagalan ulit ako.”

Umupo ako sa gilid. Hinawakan ang kamay niya. Mainit. Buhay. Pero ang tagal nang hindi bumabalik.

“I had dinner with someone,” I said, kahit alam kong hindi niya maririnig. Or maybe he do. I don’t know anymore.

“Hindi ikaw, honey. At hindi ikaw yung gusto kong kasama kagabi.”

I closed my eyes.

“I didn’t want to… pero napilit. Arranged marriage daw. CEO. Tahimik. Mabait naman. Pero hindi ikaw. Ikaw pa rin. Ikaw palagi, honey.”

Hindi ako umaasang sasagot siya.

Pero tanong pa rin ako nang tanong.

“I’m still working in East Crest. ER rotation last week. May bagong intern na parang ikaw. Maingay. Mapilit. Palaging gutom.”

Tumulo ang luha ko, tahimik lang. Ayoko ng drama. Pero sa kwarto niya, wala akong maitatago. Dito ako totoo. Dito ko lang inaamin.

“Minahal kita. Minahal pa rin kita. Hanggang ngayon.”

Napangiti ako. Sandaling ngiti.

“I’m not in love with him. Because I’m still in love with you.”

I traced my fingers over his something I used to do when he’d get anxious before big presentations. He used to be full of life. A med student too. Masayahin. Maingay. Mapilit. Jealousy.

“Honey, I love you. I want to hear your voice. I miss that.

“Endri Mango Domingo. The man who feel this way. I still love you, honey.”

And I was smile dahil may pagbabago.

“Kunting tiis nalang, ma'am.” Sabi ng nurse sa'kin.

“Thank you.”

I'm 32 years old. And I wait him 9 years na.

CHAPTER #6 SIENNA POV "Charity gala. Formal attire. Plus one mandatory." That was the message. From Lolo. And guess who my plus one was? I stared at my reflection. Champagne-colored silk. A soft slit on the side. Hair pulled up, with a few strands loose to soften my face. I looked… elegant. Like someone who belonged to Dorian’s world. Even if I never really did. Dumating siya sa pickup location not in his usual SUV, but in a sleek black car that probably costs more than my entire medical school tuition. He stepped out in a tailored black suit. Clean. Crisp. Lethal. Pagbukas niya ng pinto, nagkatitigan kami. Hindi ko alam kung bakit ako natigilan. Maybe it was the way he looked at me not with awe, not with charm… Just attention. "Okay ka lang?" tanong niya, casual. Tumango ako. "Let's get this over with." The ballroom was glowing in soft lights. Crystal chandeliers. Golden table settings. Photographers. Socialites. CEOs. Political names. And us. "Smile," he whispered haba

Chapter #05SIENNA POVPagod na pagod ako. Twelve-hour shift. Dalawang pedia case. Pakisuyo na lang.”Seriously?I thought we were done for the week. Clean. Composed. At oddly… out of place sa hospital setting.“Medyo?” sagot ko, pinipilit maging civil. “Akala ko may schedule lang tayo pag kailangan.”He raised an envelope. “Files daw. “Next time, pwede mong i-book sa courier.”“Wow. Noted.”Tahim

‘Yun lang.“I'm busy too. Or maybe you want… kailangan kitang puntahan d'yan.”Napasinghap ako at luminga-linga sa gilid.Parang binubuhay niya ang inis ko. Ano bang problema niya?
