The venue was decorated elegantly with dark, glowing colors that complemented the flashy dresses worn by the guests. Ann Sinclair sat still where her mother had placed her, twirling a glass of wine between her fingers while her eyes stayed fixed on the man, Lucas Montgomery standing at the other end of the hall. She huffed as Lucas conversed with the women that surrounded him while he paid no attention to the woman he just married.
In frustration, she drowned the wine in her cup as she took her time to study her new husband; Lucas Montgomery. He stood out perfectly amongst the guests, dressed impeccably in a black fitted three-piece suit that clung to his muscular build. His short black hair slicked back, and his black piercing eyes were bright with mischief as he interacted with the people around him.
Ann wasn't angry, she just expected he would pay her some extra attention, especially on their wedding day.
“Ann, what are you doing here?”
The sound of her mother's voice snapped her out of her thoughts, tilting her head she looked at her mother with a bored expression, “Why do you keep asking that question, Mother?”
Mrs. Sinclair's smile wavered a bit but she was quick to gather her composure as she closed the distance to reach her daughter, her eyes narrowed in warning. “Don't start with the attitude, young lady. And smile, the press are everywhere.”
Ann gave a low growl before doing just as her mother ordered, fixing a forced smile on her face.
“Much better,” Mrs. Sinclair said with a sharp nod. “You should be mingling with your husband, why are you sulking here?” She snatched the glass of wine from Ann, “No drinking.”
“Common mom,” Ann whined.
“Get up and go to your husband.”
Ann made no move to stand up and instead sank further into her seat, “As you can see Mother, he's very busy.”
Mrs. Sinclair glanced briefly over her shoulder then back at Ann with a disapproving look, “He's doing what he should, and instead of whining you should be there meeting new people and mingling, most of your father's potential clients are all here.”
Ann gave her mother an incredulous look but said nothing in return. Her parents could be overbearing most times, for example right now. How could her mother expect her to go around and mingle with a bunch of strangers? All the people are either invited by her parents or her beloved husband and they are all here to witness the biggest business wedding of the century and not to actually pay attention to the sulking bride.
“This is your chance, Ann. You are supposed to be out there showing Lucas just how great of a wife you can be.”
Ann scowled, “He's busy mum. I can't just throw myself at him, he won't even glance in my direction. He didn't even pay me that much attention when we were picking out wedding dresses and tasting desserts.”
Mrs. Sinclair's lips quivered, “Are you jealous?”
Ann's nose scrunched, “Of course not Mother, don't be ridiculous and_,” the rest she had to say died down as her mother grabbed her arm and began pulling her off the seat. “What are you doing?”
“Taking you to your husband,” Mrs. Sinclair said sassily, “Walk with me.”
Ann swallowed back her protests fully aware there was nothing that could change her mother's mind.
“Smile,” Mrs. Sinclair reminded and flashed a smile of her own when Ann obeyed instructions. “This is a new stage, honey. You can't keep acting childish, you have a husband now.”
“I doubt he would care,” Ann mumbled under her breath. “I don't understand why you want me to try so hard, we are already married and it's not like Lucas can back out of the business deal anymore.”
Mrs. Sinclair glared at her daughter with a disappointed sigh, “Just because the marriage is not out of love doesn't mean you can't be happy with him even if it’s just a business expansion strategy. You could learn to care for him as time passes by_,”
Ann's face scrunched up into a frown and she shook her head quickly, “Not happening and especially not with that proud ass, he's too self centered for my liking.”
Mrs. Sinclair chuckled, “You sound just like I did when I met your father but you see how it went.”
Ann hummed, unsure if she should go on arguing with her mother. “Whatever you say, mother. Let's just get this wedding over with, I'm exhausted.”
“All in good time, my dear. Have I told you how pretty you look today?” Mrs Sinclair said, patting her daughter's hand.
Ann's cheeks flushed, “Don't tease me Mother but I know I'm sexy even though I had to choose my least favorite dress because of my back.”
Mrs. Sinclair opened her mouth to say something but the sound of someone clearing the throat drew both their attention away. Ann felt her good mood slip away as her eyes met with Lucas, she let her eyes longer to her father standing beside him and forced a smile.
“You're done mingling?” Mrs Sinclair asked, breaking the awkward silence.
Mr. Sinclair nodded and just on cue Lucas flashed a megawatt smile that could get any woman swooning as he extended his hand to her,
Ann blinked, staring at the hand in confusion. “What?”
Mrs Sinclair nudged her daughter's side and shoved her forward with a giggle, “Don't be silly, go to your husband.”
Lucas chuckled, grabbing her hand. “I believe you should be ready to leave now?”
She nodded, eyeing their joined hands.
“If you will be excusing us, I shall be taking my wife,” Lucas said politely.
“Of course, Lucas. She's all yours.”
And just like that, Ann said goodbye to her old life and hello to her new life. The man standing beside her leading her away was a solid reminder that nothing was going back to how it was.
The front view of the restaurant was designed to give the building a nice look, the parking lot is just opposite the corner, and the front has brightly coloured flowers planted which gives the building a radiating look from where Lucas sat.The restaurant, although small, was buzzing with hasty workers moving to and fro to attend to customers. The place strangely looked like a success despite his opinion of the place. It had been a long time since Lucas had last been in a place like this, it was usually fancy and expensive restaurants or bars, that was usually where he held his meetings and had his usual fun but when he had suggested his favorite bar to Lilian, she had bluntly turned down his offer and instead suggested this restaurant.Lucas felt it probably had something to do with her skepticism but he was glad she accepted his offer to meet up.He took in his surroundings once again, noting peculiar attributes. He could never have guessed he would ever be in a place like this most
“Well since you can't call I would suggest you settle for a simple text then,” Shane said in a bored tone.Lucas blinked. Then blinked again. “Isn't that too I don't know light?” Lucas quizzed with a deep frown settled between his brows.Shane sat up to study the man seated before him with a funny expression. “What are you implying by saying light?” “A text is going to make it seem like I'm taking this matter lightly,” Lucas tried to explain with a serious expression on his face. “And that is bad because?” Shane asked, almost sounding confused with his friend's absorbed thinking.“She's of great importance to me, Shane even if she doesn't know it yet. I intend to show her that so I think however I approach her I should be able to show that I'm damn serious about her,” Lucas explained, desperate to explain his opinion to his friend. Shane blinked. “You say it like you aren't a married man.”Lucas' jaw clenched at the reminder and he recoiled. Shane sighed, his eyes narrowed down on
“That bitch is crazy,” Lucas snarled with his eyes narrowed into slits as he paced before his best friend. His shoulders were stiff and his fingers clenched, he looked ready to let out some anger steam any moment.“I bet she's hot.” Shane said, as he took in his friend's agitated appearance with a smirk.“No! She is definitely not hot. The right word for her is crazy, she and that crazy cousin of hers,” Lucas gritted out.“Let me get this straight, your beloved wife doesn't bust your ass with her parents and instead just tells her cousin and you're ranting?” Shane quizzed with a questioning look, “It appears that I still don't get you, Lucas.”Lucas stopped pacing and turned so he was now fully facing Shane with a harsh expression on his face. “Could you stop emphasizing on that one good thing?”Shane shook his head. “I simply can't. As much as you're my best friend and I'd love to take your side you have to suck it in and be grateful. Ann could have told her parents, damn she could h
Lucas sat awkwardly still at the dining table, trying his hardest to keep his eye on the plate of food that had been presented before him. He couldn't believe that he almost threw himself into a dilemma but the real shock was the fact that Ann hadn't spilled the beans to her family. Hadn't that been the reason why she had rushed to her family's house to begin with? He couldn't believe he had been wrong and he couldn't believe that he stressed himself so much over nothing. As much as the situation was embarrassing, Lucas was flooded with relief. Now the real question was why his wife hadn't told on him. She was probably plotting something. A shudder ran down his spine at the thought of Ann threatening him with what she had against him. He risked a peep at Ann's parents and flinched with surprise when he found Mr. Sinclair's eyes fixed on him with a certain intensity he couldn't place.“How has Ann been? I hope she hasn't been causing you any trouble?”It was Mrs. Sinclair who spoke u
The moment Ann finally managed to keep her tears in was about the same time Lucas moved to settle on the available seat beside her. She stiffened up a bit but easily snapped out of it, quickly gathering her composure. She held back the urge to glare at Lucas knowing fully well it would prolong matters and get her parents angrier, knowing they would back up Lucas made her feel worst than she already did. “Excuse me,” she mumbled under her breath, shoving her chair back harshly and rising to her feet. She needed breathing space.Without waiting for anyone's reply she grabbed her phone and exited the place hurriedly with a huge frown on her face. She hated Lucas. Was this all a game to him? Why on earth would he bring up the matter, especially in front of her parents? A part of her wanted to be happy that Lucas thought about apologizing but the other rational part of her cursed him for his bullshit timing. Ann stormed into her room, glaring at everything in sight. She couldn't believe
The atmosphere of the Sinclair's family dining room was very tense and morose, except for Isla of course, who was barely able to contain her excitement with a huge smile adorned on her soft features. Ann glanced at her cousin with a deep frown wanting to be irritated at her because it was very obvious who had suggested this breakfast to her father. Isla was dressed in a red gown that clung to her features but not too much to her features. It was like Isla was doing her best not to attract too much attention this time but Ann could never understand what was going on in her cousin's head. It was like she was in her own dimension. “Master Lucas has arrived.”The gatekeeper announced before disappearing into the hallway but only to appear again with Lucas by his side. Ann ignored the squeak of excitement coming from her cousin and focused her attention on Lucas. Her eyes trailed over his frame to take in his suit clad body before moving up to rest on his face. If it wasn't because she
