CHAPTER FOUR

 THE ARRIVAL

Aurora POV

The flight landed at 9:50.

The ceremony was scheduled for 10:30. The drive from the airport to the venue was forty minutes. I knew this because Joel had sent me the logistics breakdown three days ago, color-coded, with contingency notes in the margins. He was an excellent PA. He understood, without being told, that I did not like surprises.

I also knew, without checking, that Henry would be standing outside waiting.

Let him wait.

We came off the plane the way we always did, Joel moving ahead to coordinate, my security detail forming up around us, Zenya's hand in mine and her white bunny tucked under her other arm. She had named the bunny Gerald. I had not asked why. There were things about Zenya I had learned to accept without explanation.

The New Jersey air was different from Los Angeles. Sharper. It carried something that had nothing to do with the weather a weight, a familiarity I hadn't expected to feel so immediately. Six years was a long time. Apparently not long enough to make a city forget you.

Six SUVs with tinted windows were lined up on the tarmac. Joel was already at the first one, door open, head bowed slightly in that efficient way of his that communicated everything was handled without requiring him to say so.

I paused before getting in. Beside me, Zenya was looking around with the focused curiosity she applied to new places, cataloguing everything, storing it, the way Marc used to do. The way I had never managed to stop noticing.

"In you go," I said.

She climbed in without argument. That alone told me she sensed something different about today. Zenya without argument was Zenya paying attention.

The city moved past the window on the way to the venue. I watched it without seeing most of it, the changed storefronts, the new construction, the particular skyline of a place that had continued existing without you. I had lived here for five years. It looked like someone else's memory now.

Zenya played quietly beside Elizabeth, her bunny positioned on her knee with the seriousness of a business associate. Elizabeth watched her with the calm patience she had maintained, without variation, for four years. I had asked her once how she did it, the steadiness, the never-rattled quality of her. She had looked at me as though the question didn't fully make sense to her.

“You just decide to be steady,” she said. “And then you are.”

The SUV slowed. I heard the noise before I registered we had arrived, voices, movement, the specific density of a crowd that had been waiting and was now reacting. Through the tinted glass I could see the press already assembled outside the Marriott Grand Hall, cameras raised, bodies pressing forward.

My stomach did something I didn't give it permission to do.

I closed my eyes. One breath. One slow, deliberate breath, the kind Marc had taught me when I told him I didn't know how to be calm in rooms full of people who were watching me. “You're not performing,” he said. “You're just walking. You've walked your whole life. Do that.”

I texted Joel.

<Come and open the door.>

The door opened. The flashlights hit.

I stepped out.

The noise rose immediately,my name from several directions at once, microphones angled toward my face, the particular chaos of press who have been waiting too long and are now compensating. I kept my chin level. I kept walking. Joel materialized at my left and began moving people back with the quiet authority of someone who had done this many times and had no patience for the alternative.

"Mrs. Aurora…..just one comment—"

"Ma'am, over here…"

"She has a daughter…. look at her—"

That last one made me glance down reflexively. Zenya was walking beside me with her bunny under her arm and her chin slightly raised, which meant she was nervous and covering it, a gesture so familiar it stopped my breath for a half-second. I had seen it in the mirror for six years. I had never seen it on someone else's face before.

I kept walking.

A man in a blue suit leaned too close with his phone extended. Before I could respond one of my security team put a palm flat against his chest and moved him back without ceremony. The crowd murmured.

Inside, the Grand Hall was white marble and high ceilings and the kind of organized grandeur that announces itself before you've fully entered. I took it in without slowing, the arrangement of guests, the press positioned along the sides, the careful staging of a man who had wanted very badly to make a good impression.

I heard the whispers first.

<That's her. That's actually her.>

I didn't look toward them. I lifted my chin slightly and let the room settle around me the way rooms do when you stop trying to manage them.

Zenya tugged my hand. I bent to her.

"Everyone is looking at you," she whispered, with the tone of someone reporting important intelligence.

"Let them," I whispered back.

I straightened, and saw him.

He was across the room, still greeting guests, his back partially to me. The suit was good. His posture was the same. Six years had done very little to him externally, which I noted with the detached objectivity of someone who had spent six years becoming entirely unrecognizable to the person she used to be.

His business, however, had not fared as well as his posture. I knew the numbers. I had reviewed them before approving the proposal. Nicolas Enterprise had taken losses it hadn't fully recovered from, had lost two major partnerships in the last three years, had a reputation in the industry that was functional but fragile. He needed this merger. He had needed it for a long time.

I had approved it anyway, for AME, for the strategic value, for the northeastern market gap it would close. I had told myself that cleanly and I believed it.

I also believed that what was about to happen to his face when he turned around was something I had earned the right to witness.

I crouched down to Zenya's level, ignoring the cameras that tracked the movement.

"Stay with Elizabeth," I said quietly. "No wandering. Stay where I can see you. Understood?"

She looked at me with those eyes, serious, dark, completely his and completely her own — and placed her pinky against her throat with great ceremony.

"Pinky promise, mommy."

I kissed her forehead. I stood.

A young woman in a fitted office dress appeared at my side, bowing slightly. "Welcome, ma'am. I'm here to escort you to your seat."

"Don't worry, Lena." A voice came from directly behind me. "I'll take it from here."

I went very still.

Not from fear. From the specific discipline of a woman who had been preparing for this moment for six years and was not going to let it arrive without her full composure intact. I heard Lena murmur something and withdraw. I heard the room continue around us, voices, movement, the ordinary noise of a ceremony in progress.

I turned.

Henry Nicolas was standing three feet away with his hand extended and his face completely undone.

He wasn't a dramatic man. It was quieter than that, a stillness that had nothing to do with composure, the particular quality of someone whose understanding of the moment they are standing in has just been entirely revised. His hand was raised halfway between us. His eyes were on my face. His mouth was slightly open and he had forgotten, for the moment, to close it.

I looked at him the way you look at something you have examined so thoroughly in memory that the real version is almost beside the point.

His hand stayed wherpe it was. Mine stayed at my side.

"Mr. Nicolas," I said.

My voice was perfectly steady.

"Shall we move forward?"

Aurora POVThe meeting ran two hours and fourteen minutes.Every clause. Every figure. Every restructured term my legal team had prepared went across that table and Henry's team accepted most of them and negotiated the rest and by eleven fifty-three we had a working framework that looked nothing like the document he had originally proposed and everything like what AME needed it to be.I shook Davies' hand. I shook Henry's hand last — brief, professional, the handshake of two people who have just done business and are both pretending that is the only thing that happened in this room today. His eyes held mine for one second longer than the handshake required.I looked away first.Joel was at my elbow before I reached the door."Car is ready," he said. "Elizabeth called twice during the meeting."I stopped walking."Twice.""Yes ma'am." His voice was even but his jaw was slightly tight. "I didn't want to interrupt the negotiation. She said it wasn't an emergency.""But she called twice."

CHAPTER FIFTEENRinnah | POVThe waiting room chair was hard against my back.I sat with my bag on my lap, legs crossed, phone face up, and watched the door at the end of the room. The doctor had gone through it nineteen minutes ago. I had not looked at anything else since. My phone buzzed.Henry.‘Rinnah. I'm serious. Call him off. If anything happens to her or Zenya I will not be able to protect you from what comes after. Do you understand me?’I read it. Set the phone face down on my knee.Protect you from what comes after.I uncrossed my legs. Crossed them the other way. I looked at the door.My father had called at seven this morning. Two minutes, maybe less. He didn't waste time on calls — never had."It's handled," he said."The girl and the child," I said. "Don't touch them.""Understood.""I mean it.""Rinnah." Just my name. The way he said it when he wanted me to stop repeating myself."Aurora simply finds New Jersey uncomfortable," he said. "People leave uncomfortable plac

CHAPTER FOURTEENTHE TABLEHenry | POVShe moved fast, her fingers were around my wrist and she pulled, sharp, deliberate, the way you pull something you want your full attention on and my elbow came off the table and I was looking directly at her face from eight inches away.I had never seen Aurora furious before. In the five years we were married she had cried. She had gone quiet. She had left the room. She had absorbed things with the specific patience of a woman who had decided that holding herself together was more important than falling apart in front of someone who didn't deserve the performance. The woman holding my wrist across a hotel restaurant table at eight fifty-three in the morning was not soft."You put her there." Her voice was low. Controlled in the way of something that is being held at a specific volume by considerable effort. "That woman at my door this morning. You put her there.""Aurora….""Answer the question, Henry.""No." I kept my voice even. "I didn't.""

CHAPTER THIRTEENBREAKFASTHenry | POVThe tie was giving me trouble, I stood at the mirror and worked on it for the third time, my fingers not cooperating the way fingers don't cooperate when the head they belong to is somewhere else entirely. The bandaging was gone, I had taken it off myself at five this morning because I was not walking into a nine o'clock contract meeting looking like a man who had lost a bar fight, which I was, but which nobody needed to see evidence of. The stitches were visible if you looked closely. I intended to make sure nobody looked closely.I got the knot halfway right and stopped.Hands came around from behind me. I know it was Rinnah, her fingers found the tie and took it from me without a word, her chin at my shoulder, her eyes finding mine in the mirror briefly before dropping to the knot. She worked it slowly. Correctly. I watched her hands in the mirror and said nothing. She finished the knot and smoothed it flat against my chest and left her palm

CHAPTER TWELVEAurora | POVThe knock pulled me out of sleep, I lay still with my face half buried in the pillow and told myself I had imagined it. Every part of my body was in agreement that it was not time to be awake and I was inclined to side with my body. The knock came again, I opened one eye, found my phone on the nightstand. I tapped the screen and it turned on, I looked at the time and it was just Six fourteen. The knock came a third time.I pushed the duvet back,my robe was on the chair. I pulled it on in the dark, tied it, found my slippers with my feet and moved toward the door.Downstairs the suite was dim. The whiskey glass from last night is still on the side table. Curtains holding back whatever New Jersey looked like at six in the morning. I crossed to the front door and leaned into the peephole. It was a woman.Young, dark hair pulled back, hotel uniform. Holding a coffee tray, single cup, small jug, napkin folded with careful precision.I had not ordered coffee, I l

THE BARHenry | POVThe engine turned and I pulled out of the compound without knowing where I was going. That was the truth of it. No destination, no plan, just the specific need to put distance between myself and that house and the conversation I had left sitting on the living room coffee table next to a plate of untouched biscuits. I drove with both hands on the wheel and the radio off and New Jersey moving past the windows in the particular way it moved at night, familiar, indifferent, entirely unchanged by the fact that my life was currently falling apart in it.I ended up at McCready's.I hadn't been there in years. It was the kind of bar that didn't try, low lighting, sticky counters, the specific smell of a place that had absorbed decades of bad decisions without judgment. I used to come here when I was twenty-three and had nothing and thought everything was ahead of me. I parked outside and sat in the car for a moment and then went in.The bartender didn't know me. Good."Whi
