Chapter 3

Author: Existence
On the third day, Selena finally came to the hospital, and she didn't come alone.

Joe held Katy's hand as they followed Selena, a basket of fruit in the other hand.

Katy was holding the latest game console, which Selena bought for her last week. Simon had been eyeing it for ages, but Selena said it was too expensive and that kids shouldn't get caught up in games.

"How is Simon doing?" Selena walked in, seemingly concerned. But when I looked up, I met her eyes—calm and without a trace of emotion.

I was lost in thought for a moment and accidentally cut my fingertip with the blade. A bead of blood immediately formed and dripped onto the apple I had only halfway peeled.

The cut hurt, but my heart hurt even more.

"Eric, I'm talking to you." Selena frowned in displeasure.

"As you said, the doctor was there. Simon's fine." I remarked coldly.

"What's with your attitude?"

"Eric, are you still upset?" Joe walked over with a smile and placed the basket of fruit on the bedside table.

"Selena had no choice. Katy's competition the other day was way too important. It could affect her future school admission. Since Simon's surgery was successful, it really wasn't that urgent anymore."

I set the blade down and looked up at him. "Joe, can you be any more shameless?"

Joe's expression froze, and he turned to Selena, saying, "Selena, I was just being nice and decided to see how Simon was doing."

Selena's expression immediately darkened. "Eric, if you're angry, take it out on me. Don't go after Joe.

"He's Simon's godfather. He came to see Simon because he cares about him."

"Godfather?" I let out a chuckle. "Did I ever agree to that?"

"If I say yes, that's all that matters!" Selena raised her voice. "Wouldn't it be nice to have another person caring for Simon? Don't be so petty. You're a grown man."

"I don't need that."

I pointed at the door. "Get lost."

"You…"

"Daddy, it's really loud…" Simon woke up. Startled, he looked at us timidly.

Selena's expressions softened a little. She walked over and reached out to stroke his head. "Simon, I'm here to see you. I even brought your godfather and Katy here."

Simon looked away and shrank back from her touch. Her hand froze in midair.

"Simon?"

"You're a bad mommy." Simon's voice was soft, but every word was crystal clear.

"I don't need another godfather. Nathan's already my godfather. I don't like this guy." Simon pointed at Joe.

Children spoke without filters, and their words could hurt the most.

Joe pretended to be hurt. "Simon, did your father teach you to say all that? I really adore you…"

"Eric, what have you been teaching our son all this while?"

Selena flew into a rage and pointed at me. "You've raised him to be so rude!"

"The kid is just telling the truth." I rose to my feet and stood in front of Simon.

"He knows who treats him well and who doesn't. Unlike some people, who are blind to the truth."

The atmosphere grew tense.

Selena was so angry that her chest heaved. She tugged at Joe and turned to leave. "Let's go! I tried to be nice, and this is what I get in return!"

But Joe didn't move an inch. He spoke hesitantly, his voice soft. "Selena, don't be like that. Eric's just worn out from taking care of the kid, so he's in a bad mood.

"Katy, go play with Simon for a while. Show him your toy."

Katy was already eight years old, but she had grown somewhat spoiled and willful. She walked over to the bed and tossed the game console onto Simon.

It happened to land near his incision.

"Ah!" Simon yelped in pain.

I hurried over and pulled back the blanket. It was a good thing the game console didn't hit the incision, but it had struck his collarbone.

"Why did you do that?" I shoved Katy away. She lost her balance, staggered backward, and fell to the floor, landing on her bottom.

"Ah!" Katy screamed at the top of her lungs. "Daddy! He hit me! This evil man hit me!"

Joe yelped in alarm and rushed over to hold Katy in his arms. "Katy, are you hurt? Selena, look at Eric! How could he hit a child?"

Selena hurried over and shoved me aside. "Eric, are you nuts? Katy's just a kid. Why did you push her?"

"She threw her toy at Simon!" I pointed at Simon. "He just had his surgery!"

"It's just a toy. Could it really kill him? Kids don't know their strength, and that's normal! Must you push her like that?"

I looked up in disbelief, only to see nothing but disgust in Selena's eyes.

Selena agreed to the divorce and walked away with nothing. The house, the car, and all the savings belonged to me. She even had to pay five thousand dollars a month in child support for Simon and return the more than one hundred thousand dollars she had previously transferred to Joe. The moment Selena stepped out of the courthouse, the divorce certificate in hand, she caught up to me and tugged at my sleeve. "Eric, could you… Could you let me have the car? I need it for work."I stopped in my tracks and looked down at the hand clutching my sleeve. In the past, I used to hold that hand as we walked down the aisle and vowed never to betray each other. Later, that same hand peeled prawns for Joe, opened bottles for Katy, and shoved me into getting my blood drawn. And now, that hand was trembling, as if pleading for mercy. "Selena, that's my car." I looked at her, my gaze calm. "Back then, you sold our family car just to buy a limited-edition watch for Joe. My parents saw how

Once the truth was finally laid bare, it was worse than I had imagined. Selena was willing to hurt her own husband and son for a scheming, manipulative man. Just then, the door was kicked open with a bang. Selena had returned and was standing at the doorway, looking furious. Clearly, she had overheard our conversation earlier. She strode over and slapped Joe.Joe covered his face, looking frantic. He quickly reached out to grab her hand. "Selena, you heard everything, didn't you? Hear me out! It's not what you think! This man pissed me off so much that I said things I didn't mean…""Get lost!" Selena yanked her hand away from him. "Joe, you really disgust me! I must've been blind to ever think you were a kind man!"Joe froze for a moment before suddenly letting out a chuckle. "Selena, who do you think you are? If you really loved your husband and son, would you have rushed over just because I called? Would you really have dumped your son in the regular ward just for me?"St

I officially filed for divorce in court. When Selena received the divorce papers, she was still out at the amusement park with Joe and Katy. Selena's guilt didn't even last a week. In the end, just a single call from Joe was enough to pull her away from us. Selena rushed to the hospital and threw the papers in my face."Eric, are you for real?""Of course. Did you think I did that for fun?" I stared at Selena coldly. "I'm not agreeing to a divorce!" Selena roared. "I only sent Joe that money because I was lending it to him. "So what if colleagues help each other out? Those photos… They were edited! We only took those photos for fun during the team-building activity!""Save that for the judge.""Eric, don't take it too far. Once we're divorced, you'll be stuck with a sickly son. Who would even want to marry you?"I earn 500 thousand a year. Once we're divorced, I can still find someone younger to marry me!""Then I wish you all the best." Seeing that the tough approach

As tears welled up in my eyes, my voice became choked with emotion. "Selena, do you really want me to rip away the last shred of your dignity?"Selena fell silent, her gaze darting away uneasily. "Eric…" Joe looked righteous. "If anything, this is all my fault. I shouldn't have brought Katy here. "Selena, quickly talk some sense into Eric. Don't ruin your relationship because of me. If all else fails, I'll leave right now…"Joe acted as if he were about to take Katy and leave, but he moved so slowly. It was as if he were waiting for something. As expected, Selena grabbed his arm. "It's just you and Katy. Where are you taking her?" Selena turned back and fixed her gaze on me, her eyes filled with disgust."Eric, have you had enough? Joe already swallowed his pride and apologized to you. What else do you want? Must you push him until he can't take it anymore?""That's not what I want," I said calmly. "I just want a divorce.""You want a divorce? In your dreams!" Selena steppe

I had no idea how I made my way to Room 1208. I even lost a shoe in the process. When my feet hit the glass shards, I didn't even feel the pain. Room 1208 was in complete chaos. An old man in the next bed was coughing hard, spitting phlegm all over the floor.Simon's face was swollen badly and had turned red. He opened his mouth as he tried to breathe, but he couldn't even make a sound. "Simon!" Julie was administering epinephrine to Simon."Who gave the kid mango?" Julie roared. "It's stated in the medical record that he has a severe mango allergy!"A caregiver nearby was cowering in the corner, holding some mango peel. "I… I saw the kid crying and wanted to give him some fruit…" This was supposedly the best caregiver Selena had hired. "Get lost!" I rushed over and punched the caregiver in the face. "If anything happens to Simon, you'll pay for it!" After half an hour of resuscitation efforts, Simon's airway finally cleared. Even the swelling and redness were gradually

My mind went blank. Simon had just had his surgery and couldn't get out of bed. How could he be gone? Like a madman, I grabbed a nurse walking past me. "Where's the patient from Room 302? The little boy who just had heart surgery."The nurse flipped through her records and looked at me with a puzzled expression."The boy's mother arranged to have him transferred to a regular ward this morning. She said she wanted her friend's kid to stay in this room."A regular ward? That place was for eight people, and people were always coming and going every day. The environment was noisy and crowded, with the highest risk of infection.Simon had just undergone his open-heart surgery, so he was still prone to allergies. I felt my blood run cold.Just then, Selena came upstairs, still out of breath from running as she carried the chicken soup. When she saw me standing in the corridor, her expression shifted. "Honey, why did you leave the room? Didn't I tell you to rest?" "Where's Simon?"
