My eyes pop out wide. No, it literally explodes. Like, dude, don't tell me you're going to fight. "This dude is too full of himself, freaks?" The first guy laughs, his voice dripping with disbelief as he points at Conrad. "Looks like a dramatic comic where a rat's trying to fight a cat over a fish." The other shakes his head, smirking at Conrad. I shake my head, still pulling his hand. This is getting serious, and if I stand here without doing anything, the outcome will be dire. I sigh, then turn to Conrad. "I know freaks need to be dealt with, but your time is too expensive to spare on them." I whisper. "Hello? Bitch?!" One gives me a mean glare. But Conrad doesn't budge; he never does. Not while those two freaks are still standing, smirking, not even flinching. They keep gazing up at him without a blink, like they really want to test his patience, to see what he can do!! "I'm not going to fight. Just leave." Conrad tells me, taking his hand away from mine. I bite my bottom lip hard, my mind screaming at me to stay. I don't like the atmosphere. I don't like how the three men are glaring at each other like they're about to sniff out each other's lives. But I leave, slowly, still looking back at them, still giving Conrad a pleading look not to fight in my room. And like that, I walk completely out of the room. I stand outside, fingers in my mouth as I bite on them nervously. I usually bite my fingers whenever I'm nervous, and that's exactly what I'm doing. I expect to hear screams, maybe bones cracking, things shattering as they fight, but I barely hear anything, and that makes me restless. It leaves me completely on edge, shaken. What's going on inside? Did the two team up? Like snapping Conrad's head to a side and dropping his limp body, without a word, without a sound? I shake my head, almost laughing at myself. That wouldn't even happen, would it? But my nerves never settle, so I turn around and am about to head in when I pause, feet locking to the floor as I come face to face with them again. They only stare at me for a few seconds. "You've got some luck shining on your face." One points at me. I'm still confused, wondering what actually transpired between the three, when Conrad walks out of the room, arms crossed over his chest, face calm, too calm for someone who almost got into a fight with the two. They turn to him. No smile, no gesture; they only stare at him like he has them under his feet. Like they have a lot to say but can't bring themselves to say a word. They only turn, and that's that. They're out. "What... What just happened?" I breathe out in disbelief, swinging toward Conrad so fast that my hair almost slaps his face. Now that calm expression? Gone! His face isn't squeezed into a tight frown or anything. It's the typical grandpa face that wants to scold his granddaughter, and only a proper explanation from that child will save her. He tilts his head, calmly, softly, but it's enough to tell me what he means. He's asking me inside. On a normal occasion, I'd pretend I don't understand that gaze or even object. But now? The case is different. Entirely different. He saved me from those freaks. Cleared my debts without bothering to engage me in an exam-like questioning. He just... pressed the money in. Iconic. Perfect story of a pretty damsel in distress saved by her boss. Just... PERFECT! We're already inside, seated on the sofa, and while Conrad has his arms folded and legs crossed, I'm still biting my lips, with no idea how or where to start. "How... How were you able to make them leave, that too, willingly?" I finally ask the question burning in my chest. He shrugs. "I paid them off." He responds freely, and I shake my head. Of course I know he paid them off. He did it right in my presence, and that was when one lunged a punch at him, so that crap about paying them off isn't for me. "You know what I'm saying." I say. "Men talk." He waves it off, then brings his legs down, his expression tightening. "Now, what happened?" Silence, for a while. I just sit there, staring at him, unable to say a word. Unable to look away. He cocks his head. "Are you going to talk? Or do I have to find my way into your skull and get the answers myself? How the hell did you know these bastards? And the money? What was that?" He doesn't ask like a boss; he just asks, like he truly wants to know how I got entangled with them. I heave. The kind that's heavy, filled with unspoken words. "Shit happened, and I got..." He flicks his finger in the air, cutting me off. I gaze up at him. "No parables. Cut straight to the chase." He says, no longer asking but demanding. I exhale. "It's been roughly six months since I borrowed from them. I promised to pay back within a month because I truly thought I would..." I pause, everything that happened a few months ago playing before me like I'm seated in a cinema. I wanted to quit that clubbing so badly. I was utterly disgusted with myself every time I came back from dancing on poles just for money, so when that creepy opportunity knocked at my door, I didn't think twice before investing. I didn't have the money, but the offer was promising. So I went to them and borrowed, because I thought investing in stocks would fetch me something to start my life with, but... no, I was completely wrong. I lost the 10,000 dollars I borrowed from them. The stock crashed and I became a debtor. Over the months, they always came for their money and I always had an excuse, one after the other, not because I wanted to play them, but because I didn't have the money. I mean, no one wants these people pulling up at their doorstep almost every month. That isn't the life I wanted for myself either. He sighs. "And you had to borrow from an illegal loan shark?" Conrad asks after I'm done explaining. My body goes cold. Too cold. "Illegal?" I repeat, like I just heard a strange word, which I did. I've known them for six months, at least, and they never looked like... "How? I... I never thought they were." I mutter, more like whispering the words to myself. "You're clueless." I hear him say under his breath. He hisses, then stands from the sofa. "Come with me." He orders, but almost immediately, realization slams into me like a tidal wave and my eyes shoot wide. "Hold on..." I gasp.Diane's POVIs it only me, or is Conrad's scandal fading already? With the scandal handled by his PR team, none of the trouble falls on him, and it's been fading away as quickly as it spread. Conrad would love it. It's all he ever wanted. The scandal fading away means an end is coming to our contract sooner than I expected. I haven't gotten attached to him, only to all the things he has to offer me in return for accepting to do this with him."Are you even with me?" Conrad's voice echoes."Yes. Yes, I'm with you." I reply, batting my eyelashes. I didn't mean to be carried away with my thoughts.I'm worried for myself. The contract ending means I'll go back to being a stripper in one of the most patronized clubs in the city. That isn't me saying I'm not used to that life anymore.Conrad pays me so well, and I've gotten comfortable with being paid so well. To get the amount he pays me, I'd have to work in the club all nigh
Conrad's POVClubbing has become one of my least favorite things to do. It could be because I've been occupied with work lately; it can't be because I'm worried there might be a repeat of the last time. Here I am in front of a club, one of the private clubs in the city. I drove myself down here because it feels like I'm losing my spark, and the best way to reignite it seems to be clubbing.Everyone knows me to be the bubbly type and a nightlife lover, and I don't want that to change. I have a cap on my head, and since it's late in the night, no one should be able to recognize me."Time to unwind." I coo, and proceed to step inside.I left all my problems to Ward to handle, and it was the right decision. He has a team dedicated to solving all my problems, and it has been like that for the longest time. Whoever is stalking Diane will be caught soon. She got herself a new number, and it was my idea. I gave her strict instructions not to give anyone besides me her new contact, not her col
Diane's POVI step into the office breathing heavily. I'm two minutes late to work. I did all I could to avoid it, and that included running from the compound straight to the second floor in heels.Conrad won't go easy on me for being late. He doesn't care to know that I went to bed late, all because I was scared someone might break down my door and come for me after he left.I drop my laptop on my table and try to catch my breath. I don't look in a mirror, but I know my hair is a mess already. I ran without putting it into consideration."Mr. Conrad would like to see you." A colleague walks up to me and says. It's bad that I don't know her name, and it's like that with the rest of them too. Months in this office and I'm still a stranger.I smooth down my skirt, pat my hair twice, and give up on both. Then I pick up my phone from my bag. I already know the words Conrad will speak to me when I show up in front of him, which could be why I'm not fidgety. They won't be nice, I know. I tr
Diane's POV"Somehow, the footage we need to find out about the culprit is missing.""How is that possible?" I'm quick to ask."Whoever the culprit is, he's good at things like this."The CCTV footage would have helped us get to the bottom of the matter. I relied on it. The culprit decided to stay one step ahead of us, and that was wise of them."I have a feeling whoever is behind this is someone who knows you and me." I tell him."You might be right and you might be wrong."I heave a deep sigh that isn't of relief. Until we find out the identity of the culprit, my life is at risk. I can't say the same for Conrad because he has bodyguards looking after him.Ever since he dropped me off at work, I've been thinking about who could be behind this, but I haven't been able to figure it out. Perhaps Conrad is right, and this has to do with him and not me."Don't worry about anything. I have things under control." He interrupts the silence. He definitely says that so I can feel better."I ha
Diane's POVWhoever wants to make my life a living hell more than it already is, I have no idea. I can't stop thinking about who could be behind the anonymous messages, but I have no clue yet.I roll from one end of the bed to the other. I find it hard to fall asleep, and it could be because I know someone has been monitoring me closely, and the person sure doesn't have good plans for me."I have to make sure I lock the door." I mutter and get off the bed. Some minutes ago, I checked the door and found it properly locked, and I'm on my way to check it again. It's safe to say I'm scared of what might be coming. This might be a good time to have my friend come stay with me for a few days. Her company might make me feel safe. I get to the door and check again. It's properly locked. To get to work on time tomorrow, I must sleep early, but what do I do when sleep isn't forthcoming? Drinking to a stupor is definitely not an option. I don't want a hangover tomorrow.I look all around while r
Conrad's POV"You came at the right time." I say to Ward as he walks closely behind me."I do all the time. I have a feeling I'm about to save your ass again like I always do." He responds.I sit on the sofa in the living room. I had a long day at work and I know I ought to go straight to my room for a shower, but there's something important I want to share with Ward.He sits next to me, his eyes fixed on the television screen. My team and his are playing today, which must be the main reason he came, but I'm not in the mood for banter tonight."You kept me waiting at your door. I thought you'd close from work by 5pm. Did you go somewhere after work today?""Yes." I coo."I told you to give me one of your spare keys, but you refused. If you had, I wouldn't have had to wait at the door for hours." He mutters. He's my best friend, but I'm not willing to give him unrestricted access to my space for no personal reason. I take off my suit and take a deep breath. It feels like the right thin
